Had springers man & boy. I love them – bloody wife won’t take on the responsibility after our last passed away.

Best tip I can give you – take up shooting or beating & train your pup to work under a gun.
it is the most rewarding thing to see a dog doing what it is bred for. & Springers are so biddable it is a joy to train them. I trained Brewer to work & we learned together. it was a life shaping experience for us both.

ok using sheldon browns (all hail the god that was sheldon brown) gear calculator a 36:16 is 57.9inches of gear. replacing the 36 with a 42 (a 44 was a mistype) it is 67.6 inches. (26×1.9 tyre)
That’s an increase of nearly 17% – bigger than the increase of 32 to 36t.

chatted to a guy outside the shop at Peaslake today – he was running 32:20.

He could buy himself an income protection policy from Friends Provident. basically, if you are off sick from work it replaces your income. MTBing is not classified as a dangerous sport. so the premium would be calculated based on the risk associated with his job & his historic health record.

It can be a bit of a shit to underwrite involving doctor reports (paid for by the insurer) and a fair amount of waiting. but if you are self-employed and like to take risks I don’t think you can beat it as a catch all “pay the mortgage & bills” solution for those of us who can’t afford to be off work for long periods.

And while I understand it doesn’t help for now, it might give him the confidence to go back to riding.

I say this in 2 guises:
1 as someone who is self employed & had 6 months off work with a bike related broken neck &
2 as someone who used to give advice on this stuff.

I can point you toward other resources who can tell you if this would suit your circumstances. Or find your own IFA.

Do not ride C-y-b on new tires. the silicon release compound on tires fresh from the mould makes them VERY slippery on wet trail centre rock. you’ll be better on ANYthing that is part worn over a new tire.

fwiw although the PCD is correct, the slx has a marginally larger dia. (2mm?) for the “guide flats”(not sure what they are properly called) on the big ring side. I know this as I took the bash off an SLX double & put it on an XT one. i had to file the inside of the bash to make it fit (as well as doctoring the face to clear the inside of the crank arm profile).
so, in summary, no problem putting XT ring on the SLX, but SLX 44t will not fit on the XT.

I only had time to ride the north while family did the go ape thing.
I wouldn’t drive up from london to do it again. IMHO it’s a taster to get ‘proper’ MTBers on to the natural stuff in the lakes which is WAAAAY better.

the trails are all rock so get some DH tires. i used well worn 2.25 Cinders last yr.

there is a bike shop on site but they carry minimal stock, so take some spares. Oh there ain’t no phone signal. you’ll either have to use the pay phone, ride to the top of the red route (RAF radar station?) or drive to newcastleton to make your calls.
