I'm a local too so I'll do what I've always done – ride week days in the dark. For a longer daytime ride, woburn is far, FAR better & well worth the drive and the price (if you see a ranger).

the BFT fools are only in the wood at w/e's and summer evenings anyway, they can't charge you if they ain't there.

Grumm> I tried the avalanche enduro in '08. I'm quite comfortable with my masculinity & know my limits. ta :p
I might give the Mega a go next yr :D ;)

Qwerty> I think 130mm travel & 203mm disk are plenty for a welsh trail centre. I ride a solid frame SS at home & feel a bit "over biked" on a FS TBH. LOL

RB> I do prefer single finger braking & like to use the second finger rather than the 1st & have set up the levers to suit. I like the idea of focussing on technique. I was trying some of the stuff you highlighted, but I'll put some more work into it.
Perhaps it's time I spent sometime with a pro coach?

    Glenp> i hadn't – any recommendations?

& I forgot to mention: I've tweeked my brake lever positioning too. so I think that's dialled, but further ideas are accepted too…

right. google for the reservoir goats and cyclone MTB club. they are always there & will guide you.

Alternatively: email me & for small consideration (few beers?), I'll guide you (I'm recently redundant, know the woods very well & am very bored at home).

    old wounds reopened…

fwiw I know the trail to which you refer & the residents that back on to the wood have been
verciferous regarding the use of it by MTBrs.

basically their is no right to ride in Rowney Warren except where beds fat trax have their 2 hills.
MTBs are tolerated between Sandy Road & the "bike park".
between sandy road & shefford there are "no MTB trails".
BFT are not interested in supporting the XC side & have actively removed the red & blue routes.

the best thing to do is: ride anywhere you like (follow the yellow red & white arrows on trees) & abuse the walkers. eventually the BFT will be kicked out. MTBs will be banned. the forest car parks will be closed & the walkers will stop going too.

Then I can reclaim the woods & ride there, in peace, all day & all night. sweet

I'd take both bikes. You'll get an indication how much you'll enjoy the sfSS after you've ridden the exit of the car park toward the Beast.

I went for the free bikehike.co.uk & Garmin geko 201 option.
plan the route on the site, DL & UL to Geko.

you can't create a new plan on route as only the track sits on the Geko, however if you print the map from bikehike & carry it, you know where you are & where you need to be – the rest is old fashioned navigation ;)

I remember when that carbon frame was launched as a Hifi 'pro'.
IIRC it was slated as being to light & so thin was the carbon, that the bike would not hold a line because the frame would flex.

it might be a red herring but worth bearing in mind that additional 'spring' may be being generated by the frame flex.

I bet he doesn’t ride to his G/Fs house without brakes either

And he ‘might’ be talented, but he looks like a feckless **** who should have grown up & got a job ;)

yeah, but everyone knows BMXs aren’t for riding on – they are for kids to use to assert their self image. it wouldn’t be the same unless it ‘looked’ like it can do bars spins – irrespective of the riders ability to do bars spins.
for what it’s worth I can’t drive down the motorway @ 155mph, legally or otherwise with the traffic these days, but I still (stupidly) own a car that can.

do you think there is a practical reason to ride a bmx to his girlfriends house (at the other end of town) when he’s got a faster lighter spesh XC mtb in the garage???

Ah ha the splitter behind the Giro!!

on closer inspection – it’s not got a continuous cable like an MTB. it has a giro on the headstock to allow bar spins & a cable splitter under the top tube to bring the 2 cables back to 1 to link to the rear brake caliper.
The “splitter” has a very limited amount of travel inside it, so adjustments for pads need to be done behind the splitter & adjustments for lever travel etc need to be done in front of it.

EDIT> (mike> it’s a tektro centre pull. not sure if the plates flex. :/ it’s a pretty cheap Viper got for my kid to hack about on. As long as he can stop it before he hits another car I’ll be happy)

    There you go – enjoy

just head up in to beddgelert forest & have a hack about – see if you can find the ’87 DH course. It can be ridden on a solid frame LOL

also: ride up the llanberis path, down the ranger & then back over the ridge to llanberis (10m-ish)

    Ditto,
plus I’d have prolly crashed into them. I tend to suffer from “target fixation”

grip the tip of the seat with your butthole, tuck your elbows in, put your thumbs on top of the grips and drop your wrists & try to put your chest on the stem. also: focus on pulling your feet up rather than stamping down & finally: buy a steel frame singlespeed. Shortly after that your shoulders will be broader & your knob will be red raw from shagging girls.
