If you want a 5 day tour with the boyz down this way then catch the train to Penzance (when they repair the line at Dawlish) cycle to Lands End then ride Sustrans route 3 to Bristol camping/pubing on the way.

as Stumpy m4 says on route 27 its 102 miles Ilfracombe to Plymouth so easily doable on roads bikes as the route is mainly quiet roads or cycle paths.

I would suggest that 5 days is a tad too long & would only be 20 miles per day which you could walk :D

I did it a few years ago in one day on a BSO stayed in a B&B then rode back to Plymouth the next day. If you are gonna camp then there are plenty of places to pitch along the way, but maybe look to do it in fewer days.

Yep, got a 48t big ring on my MTB although I run 24t, 36t, 48t with 11-36t on the back.

I’ve still got a lowish bottom gear 24 – 11 for them steep climbs & a gert big 11 – 48 for the downhill blasts.

As the others have said you’ll get around 45mph-ish depending on the size of yer kahunas :D

There are some nice places in Derriford & Glenholt and an easy commute to work. Probably avoid the areas of Efford, Swilly/North Prospect, Whitleigh & Southway though.

If you want somewhere more rural then there is Bickleigh, Shaugh Prior & the small villages outside of Plymouth, great access to Dartmoor for riding but the commute into Plymouth can be a PITA.

PS Dartmoor IMHO is not Fat bike territory :?

Lol – yeah just seen your Strava route & I think I need to alter my directions as you were meant to carry on to the very top of Portland Lane to Ringmore Cottage then take the right after the Ringmore Cottage cattle grid, I can see my instructions weren’t clear & how you took a left after the Portland Lane cattle grid & got a tad lost :?

Good idea to go back to Sheepstor village as thats the route you would have done anyway, the slog up past the scout hut to Eylesbarrow mine is character building …

Maybe try to find OS map OL28 in the sales.

Cool, may take you up on that FOD offer sometime.

Don’t forget a £1 coin for the car park at Princetown & I can recommend the Foxtor cafe which is to the left of the mini roundabout by the Plume of Feathers pub for some apres ride drink & food.

Let me know how you get on.

yep, regularly ride on Dartmoor/Burrator at night. The conditions are superb at present with the trails being dry, for a change try riding up the widowmaker, it’s not as hard as it used to be as the top section has been sanitised with infill & is almost smooth :( still good fun riding up it.

For some extra excitment after riding down the first steep section of the widowmaker ride along the Devonport Leat to the aquaduct :-) & don’t forget the TV mast descent off North Hessary Tor another must on a Princetown loop.

Cheers for the replies guys & apologies for spelling Snowdon wrong :(

So the best route is up the Rangers Path to ‘Telegraph’ Alley then down to Llanberis, up Llanberis path to the top & back down the Rangers Path – Superb.

Just one question – I’ve got the OS Map but can’t see anything marked ‘Telegraph’ Alley??

If we go up at Llwyn Onn station up the zig zag bw it comes to a cross roads, am I right in saying the ‘Telegraph’ alley is the bw off to the left at the crossroads?

If not, can you point me i the right direction please.

Cardinham woods is open. The current route of blue is about 4 or 5 miles with 2 x sections of red. The trail flows well so a HT will be OK. We look to do 3 or 4 laps to get some miles in & a half day morning or afternoon ride.

The cafe is open & bring a few £’s for the car park £2 for 2 hours or £3 all day 8)

Take the MTB and ride up the Camel trail towards Bodmin there is stuff to ride in Grogley, Hustyns & Dunmere woods on the way up although you may need a local guide unless you’re happy to explore on your own.

As others have said Cardinham Woods is worth a visit but it’s short @ 4 or 5 miles a lap so 3 or 4 laps will only be a half day ride, the cafe is nice though.

As the others have said great value for money & @ £30 you can buy another one if it dies and it’s still cheaper than UK stuff.

    One word of caution thought.

I was charging up my chinese cree once using the charger supplied & it blew up with an enormous BANG !! scared the cr@p out of me & it actually blew the charger unit apart, luckily it did not catch fire but it could have done. I then bought an EU/UK approved charger from MTB Batteries – smudge off here.

The moral of the story is the units are cheap for a reason but please invest in an EU/UK approved charger for them.

yeah, I thought the start was a bit tight & unlike in previous years didn’t spread the field out much.

Was epic riding near Dunkery with the rain, wind & standing water.

I echo what grantmccall63 said above, play regularly & you’ll get fitter.

I now play twice a week & have played once a week for a few years, I’m the wrong side of 50 but I can still be running round at the end of 60mins when the ‘youngsters’ are on their knees.

I also ride Monday night & do a weekend ride too.

You do have to be careful as footie injuries can keep you off the bike. I broke my thumb in April playing football & was off the bike for 2 months cos I couldn’t change gear …. still played footie each week though even with thumb in the splint.

Me & 11 others went on Oldfarts seaside shuffle on the Purbecks, 27 miles of riding, 1,500 ft of climbing & in 91 degres heat 8)

    At the start

    Through the woods

    Cooling off at the beach

Chilling out at the top of a long hard climb

a pasty & drink at the pub in the sun

A great days riding with mates in superb weather – fantastic.

as DD says its all stop/start in bursts & if you haven’t played for sometime you’ll be on your knees in no time. You may turn an ankle which can be painful so take care. If you have a sub or two then make use of them by switching payers round to rest them.

The Goals league can be quite competitive so beware if you come up against a skilled side cos you’ll get tanked, also the unskilled can be aggressive IMHO if they start losing & can lash/kick out hopefully the ref will sort any of this nonsense out tho.

The 3G pitches are great but don’t slide tackle cos you’ll burn/rub the skin off your leg/knees. Get some proper outdoor football trainers as ordinary running trainers are too slippery, maybe get some shinpads too in some Goal leagues they are compulsory.

Have fun & try to enjoy it.

Managed to get out this afternoon & bag a few signs

I think this was hand painted by the Council :-)

How inviting Gluten free fish & chips

and if that doesn’t get you going then how about Pool & Darts

and finally the Best Junk Shop sign – irresistable :-)

I was going to suggest something abstract for next week so that people can interpret it their own way, how about ‘Blue’

Photo something that is blue, has blue in the name, something rude even, let your imagination run riot – just a suggestion like.

Take things easy mate & get better before trying to ride again too soon.

I’ve had a sh!t year too with one injury after another.
Bad back in Jan – 4 weeks off bike, got fit again then
Broke thumb in April playing football – 2 months off new bike which I bought 7 days before breaking thumb. Got fit again
Binned it last Sunday on Dartmoor riding into a gorse bush head/face first, 3 stitches in my ‘Tragus’ (google it).
On the plus side I went out for a ride today & came back in one piece :-)

Did a slight detour on the home commute tonight to take a snap of this milestone in our small Cornish town, Callington (home of the Ginsters pasty factory).

This to is a Grade 2 listed milestone.

For the youngsters/yoofs on STW a Furlong is one-eighth of a mile, equivalent to 220 yards, 660 feet, 40 rods, or 10 chains …. one furlong is exactly 201.168 metres :-)

Another vote for Trig points for next week.
