On Doosuks vid from 55 secs watch his hands on the wheel. Amazing.

“the biggest moment of my life” 8O
Watch it to the end, though for more commentary gold as the realisation sinks in.

The best bit’s the talk through of his Bray Hill tank slapper @ 4 mins in. Seriously impressive driving.

Too much editing otherwise. I’d like to see the full lap, with the screen split showing the different cameras (as per the bray hill replay). That would be ace.

Great stage. Sagan was much more in control than Cunego on the descent, plus Sagan pulled back time on Cunego to bridge the gap.

If “ridic” is ridiculous MW, you’re absolutely right. Far too close.

    Sorry for the hijack –

So am I OK running a 3×10 spd chainset with 9 speed everything else?

You’ve got a quite few options in the area, plus there’s a group ride that goes off on Tuesday nights @6.30 from the Leisure Centre
There are also regular rides from Matlock and there’s DVATC

You can use the Tissington trail / high peak to link up the bridleways. There’s some reasonable bridleways if you fill in the gaps from Ashbourne out to Wirksworth and up to Bakewell though there’s inevitably going to be some road as well.

Take the trail to Tissington, head to Bradbourne, then Kniveton, madge hill (but not over the top), Atlow, Corley, back over the madge, kniveton, bradbourne (no need to repeat any bridleway) and back on the trail. Loads of variations to extend this.

Bakewell, Longcliffe, Ashbourne, Cheadle or Leek, Warslow, Longnor, Monyash.

You can do it all on minor (ish) roads.

I’m having a pretty poor experience with the customer service side. Always been good otherwise, though I’ve been using paypal since the problems. Orders & delivery time (2-3 days) have not been an issue, but getting someone to respond to an email clearly is, as is any consolidated case based view of my contact with them at their end.

Doing a steep climb in Hanchurch woods in the early 90s the bike came to a stop in the muddy glue. A bit of balancing ensued but then gravity got the better of me. The bike teetered over but the SPDs wouldn’t unclip so I ended up in a heap on the floor, still attached to the bike.

What I hadn’t spotted was that the TT cable guide had cut out a perfect triangle shaped flap of flesh on my shin down to the bone when the bike keeled over.

Formal H&S “complaint” to Keith Bontrager in Bad News ‘zine netted a pair of proto ti bars. Pretty good deal I reckon.

evillittlegoat – did you get a headtube decal on your Sov? Mine arrived yesterday, but no HT decal on the bike or in the box- just the spare downtube and TT decals. After I ordered mine the price went back up within 3 hours or so.

A colleague was trying to order a set of Manitou’s at a bargain £150. The site timed out when he was checking out. When he tried again it wouldn’t let him complete the txn, and after a little longer the price went up to the MRRP. What’s worse (more telling & disappointing) is he accidently sent two “what happened” emails to CRC. The first came back basically stating they never were that cheap, you are wrong. The second came back (about 10 mins later) saying it was a stock out issue, and they’d shifted the units they had available at that price. I’m sure someone knows what’s going on there.

We’ve got oak doors and windows, and I’d second the above that if you’re not in to maintenance, avoid them. It’s all in the prep, and preparing oak is very labour intensive (read knackering if you do it yourself).

We’ve used sikkens and it’s pretty good. Bit of a pain though being a multi coat / 2 product system IIRC. I think we’ve got about 2-3 years out of a coat where not in direct sun or protected.

Prior to that we’d oiled them and we were never happy with the lack of longevity.

Internally on the stairs we used another sikkens product (sorry can’t remember which), but I’m personally not keen on the finish.

Unless you put some type of varnish on (not good on oak) welcome to the world of having your doors “striped” by wasps chewing the wood up for their nests. You can just hear the little buggers chewing away…

I’ve always fancied getting a Sov or an EWR. My wife will be pleased when the courier arrives

Thanks for the heads up on the price! If I don’t like kelly green I can blow the 300 saving on a respray :)

I’ve been pretty underwhelmed with my contour 1080. It’s the mounts and the vibration that are the biggest issue. I’ve fitted rubber “dampers” under the bar mount clamp and a “bung” between the cam and the mount. That does greatly improve things but it’s just a faff. The bar clamp is also just a nasty piece of plastic tat.

Using the goggle strap mount when skiing it’s a choice between make the goggles so tight your eyes bleed or suffer it rotating when you hit bumps or land.

Does that sound damming? Well when it works it’s very good, but it’s the far too frequent disappointment of crap footage (quality rather than gnar in my case) because of the mounts that spoils it for me.

“Buzz Cycles” according to the Forme site.

Is it just a Forme outlet or a “proper” bike shop?

I have a Thule box (one of the narrowest), and 3 carriers – 2 x 591s and the one with the fork mount. It just fits on the aero bars.

Currently in a box and waiting to be fitted.

Does anyone know where you can get extra ones of those little cable clips it comes with? Three isn’t going to be enough for my wacky cable routing.

We paid peanuts for a Lidl one. Absolutely brilliant wooden framed thing that was going strong as a “stunt bike” years later. The kids used in the house and out, and when it fell over (being wooden) it did no real damage. Kids don’t care what they ride at that age.

English frames are built “how you want them” – you’ll get full custom on 953.
I’d only go US for a custom Ti (this is a big generalisation as there are lots of nice Steel US frames out there, and just because I’d like an Eriksen or a Potts) but if you don’t have to have a particular brand why waste the extra cash? If you really want an IF or a firefly, buy one, but under the paint (or shiny metal) finish there’s not going to be much to separate them from a British built frame. A local guy has a 953 Rourke and it’s lovely.

If it all goes wrong, it’s a lot less hassle to deal with a British builder as well.

Just to bring some balance to the Islabikes love-in.

The rear mudguard design on my daughter’s beinn 20 is useless and ends up being constantly knocked and moved.
Fittings rust like hell – stem bolts, cable noodles etc.

These aren’t hard things to fix at source or after-market, but it’s pretty disappointing considering their price. Fundamentally though, they’re very good bikes.

I tried on some of their road shoes last week. Agree on the “too soft” comment around the toes – but they do feel very comfy (unnaturally so) as a result. So unnatural was that feeling though it put me off them.

I’m a sidi 44. Best fit on the mavic was 43, shimano 45…
Bought some Specialized shoes over the Mavics in the end, but a close call.

I’ve been using Paypal recently with all the payment problems, so wondered if that was the reason why I wasn’t getting an invite? Otherwise if “selection” is based on the amount you spend there or stuff left hanging in your basket, I’d have thought I’d be in with a chance! (my postman can vouch for that).

Value is more likely to be based on the value it could add to your property. Best to agree a value between yourselves and stay away from estate agent / land valuations. If you don’t have a large garden at the moment it could be quite a chunk.

1 You can still get 7 & 8 speed kit so you’ll be fine. Just don’t expect a huge choice as time passes.

2 Yep, your bb width is determined by the frame/ shell . Manufacturer site will tell you what you need but many BBs accommodate both.

3 Correct, but it’s not that black and white as you can mix & match in many cases

4 Shifters, mechs and cassette from the same manufacturer to keep it simple.

5 Not for function, but they do flap about if too long! Most need cutting.

6 Post good, IS bad :)

If it’s your first build keep it simple.
