On the pop top kombi front, vw have just launched the California Beach. Really more of a pop top caravelle than a Cali and I think I want one of these rather than the normal ‘velle.

35 new, but specced up its closer to 41 (38 from auto e bid.) 12 week delivery and no SH vans for a while.
No kitchen, 180 , dsg, 4motion , or leather options either

    Here?

That’s not an especially cheap van, though it is a 4motion.

This link will show you the ones available from the VW van dealerships, and actually shows the photos unlike the other VW site.

For a couple with bikes, they’re cool, though I’d be racking the bikes. For us with 2 kids the Caravelle is just a bit more practical.

Im a constant bargain hunter when building up bikes, and it look like I used the same offers as many of the above posters. I built my evil up with

    Flow pro 2 evo hoops
    Xt drive train
    SLX chain set
    150 Rev rlt ti
    Reverb
    Elixir cr mags
    Haven carbon bars + stem
    Wellgo mg 1s

I already had the hoops, but everything else was had at pretty good discount except for the bars. Use the clearance / weekly offers.

Got the drive train from Merlin, with the extra 10 off shimano offer
CRs were 190 for the set from Merlin also.
    Reverb from rose
    Nics from on one etc.

Get some pics posted when you build it!

    Maybe not a typical choice.
I love this. Not for the safety / instructional / scary bit, but for the first 40 secs or so.

Perfect conditions (ignoring the avalanche :) ), the sun, the shadows and a top tune.

It just makes me want to ski.

Cheers Gravity. I spotted lots of recommendations for him on Snowheads & he seems to have a very good rep. As he’s pretty close I think I’ll be using him rather than the DIY route.

I bought some new skis this year, a set of 2011 Atomic Blackeye Ti’s in the sales. I’ve only had a week on them so far and primarily bought them on the basis of all the reviews.

My prior faves were the Dynastar Sultan 80 / 85s mentioned above. The Sultan’s are a great all round ski for what you describe, and I’m not convinced the Blackeye’s are any better apart from off piste. The nomad’s are a bit heavier, but they are more stable off the piste and when it gets “chattery” in the crud.

You really need to do less than 70% on-piste for these type of ski’s to make sense as they are quite a compromise over a full on carver.

I swapped ski’s with an instructor for some piste work. He was using Tiger Sharks, which granted area pure carving piste ski, but the atomics just felt dead in comparison.
By his own admission the Sharks were very well prepped, and they were by far the best pair of Ski’s I’ve ridden. The edge grip was incredible.

I’m still happy with the Atomics however as they let you cover most of the bases (for me at Level 5 ish) on a single ski. They are a compromise though; so if you’re spending your own cash on a pair be true to how much off-piste you do, and think about hiring on the days you want something a bit wider / longer.

The Fischer Wateas are also worth a look at the same price as the Dynastars, Atomics etc, though I’ve never found a Fischer I’ve liked (in fairness I’ve only tried a couple).

Edukator – do you know any reputable shops in the Midlands, London or Leeds for a full service? :)

I thought they were some massive cake making conglomerate.

Didn’t know about Freecaster being asked to cough 100k for filming the events as well (on the Dirt article). Their website is dire.

Time STW got an interview with them ?

You missed the most important bit – how old’s your child?

We thought about the Vtech, but in the end went for a cheap normal digital camera as we couldn’t see them using it for long. Daughter got a pink Samsung for about £50 which is OK, but my son has a Minolta IIRC that was about £60, and takes brilliant pics. Neither camera is rugged, and they got them when they were about 5 or 6, and both are still working a number of years on.

As above, if they hadn’t had them for xmas, I’d just let them use one of your old cameras.

I’m taking my two to the skate park later. If I find out about any treatments I’ll let you know :) Closing your eyes doesn’t help, and having mopped up other kids broken noses in the past you just wonder “when” rather than “if”. Just keep telling yourself they’re learning to balance risk & reward.

Sorry I didn’t read the post properly first time around and answered more for biking. For the skatepark they have a mix of the lidl / aldi wrist guards and some pads we bought online somewhere. They are pretty good (hardish plastic outer) with lots of padding and they weren’t expensive. We probably got them from Amazon!

Your best bet is to look at BMX kit. Shot & Fox both make pads for smaller kids. My son had the Shot pads when he was 5, and they were a better fit than the Fox ones. They’re light, cheap and not very bulky.

Fox make really nice kids gloves as well.

You can also get kids size chest and back protectors. 661 used to make them.

With kids you really do need to try them as the sizing is very personal depending on how big your kid is.

Full face helmets at that age are hard to come by. My son ended up with a MX helmet (for BMX racing) as that was the best fit.

I had a similar choice – 2011 Maxx or 6 pack, and both heavily discounted (the 6 was £20 more)
I tried both and went for the 6 in the end. As above I like the flexibility of the long (alleged 10 hr) run time on the mid setting. It’s noticeably bigger than the maxx, but you don’t notice it when it’s on the bars. On full, it’s incredibly bright, but the beam pattern is brilliant.

OP I should have added that all my media is on a QNAP NAS, but like Doc above I tend to just use Spotify premium now.

Absolutely brilliant. I’ve got the all in one “S5” which I think they’ve just renamed to “Play5”. It’s in the the kitchen running off a “Zone Bridge” (which is a wireless bridge).

My setup isn’t officially supported but it works fine.

The ZB is supposed to be plugged in to your main router (unless you’re going to use a Cat 5 cable from your router to the Zonebridge). I use a 200 MBS powerline adaptor to route to a second router that has the ZB plugged in to it.

I will be getting a couple of the new “play3″s in the near future to build up the network.

The Android & Iphone interfaces are great. I just wish they’d added a “next track” button to the units. You have to control that from your phone or a PC.

The Spotify integration is another big plus for me. As ease of use overall, quality, design etc go, I really like this product. Their support is excellent as well.

Couldn’t find the verniers so approx (mm)

    L = 116
    Dia @ the very back = ~59
Dia @ widest point (where the fins are) = ~62
dia for most of the case = ~54

Will dig out the verniers for the six pack tomorrow or will a ruler do for an approx measurement?

Just noticed I had a Maverick Pro update available on the market.

In the latest version (1.95) caching of Google maps has been disabled at google’s request. Not that I use it for that but some might.

You need some additional SW called “Mobile Atlas Creator” for your PC (there could be alternatives – I think another is “TrekBuddy”. It’s not too intuitive on first use but with a bit of practice it’s really simple.
You then have a huge range of map sources available.

    Basically :
USE MAC to create the local map. The more tiles the bigger the file.
Copy the output to the maps folder on your phone.
Orux will let you choose it manually, or use the “maps at my location” button or zoom in / out.

I guess the Google Navigation haterz missed the 5.7 update

Nope, the OP who raised Google as an option suggested Google Navigation, which doesn’t pre-cache maps – unlike Google Maps, which does in 5.7. Though you can still get directions in maps.

My versions of maverick and orux both allow downloaded maps (for the OP), as does Copilot for the in car Nav questions.

Orux maps is my fave, then Maverick

As a complete thread hijack, can anyone recommend Android GPS driving software?

I bought Colpilot Live (V9) and I’m unimpressed to say the least. I also bought the traffic and speed cam addons.

Their support is atrocious. A week to cycle emails back and forth. Very unhelpful questions that ignore what you’ve already told them.

The app is too complex, and crams too much on the UI. Good on a feature list, awful on a phone (and I have a desire HD with a massive screen)

Their maps are incomplete. Lots of complaints about “unknown road” names for roads that have been available on GPS systems for years.

The routing can be bizarre. Changing priorities of roads seems to make it worse.

…I could go on. The problem with Google is it doesn’t download the maps.
