He must have been very unlucky to have a mech issue unless I am misreading the route they are taking. Following Tom it looks predominately fireroad/road, so does anyone know if there is much ST? Mind you with tiredness, a stray stick could jump out of nowhere. Hope he makes it and take it home today Tom 8)

    Hi 13thfloormonk,

Is that trail and out and back to Tarbet (of the whale boat fame), or can you carry on to Sourlies?

Looked at it on the map for a number of years as another way into Knoydart.

    Hi Boaty,

I personally think a 29ner is a must for you as it will fit your size and commute with appropriate tyres.

I picked up a Pinnacle Ramin 4 a couple of years ago from Evans and it has been a great bike, although I would go 5/6 to get the better fork. Evans have deals on sometimes, so have a look as good running gear and cheaper than the corresponding other marques by a few hundred quid.

I hope this helps as not sure what scheme you will be in.

    Hi,

Not sure about South Scotland but lots of places to wild camp in GlenEtive/Kinglass etc.if want to do WHWish and around that area.

I like the idea of doing Loch Nevis and wild camping on the beach in Knoydart (done the wild camp but didnt paddle over). There is also the bothy at Camusrory (top of loch nevis). Loch Nevis is a reasonably sheltered loch and good for paddling but Im no expert and it is April.

Up above Inverness, you can wild camp just about anywhere if you know the spots and look after your site (of course). And so many hills, bike routes and lochs to paddle 🙂

One has bluto and one has the Lauf, so both have some bounce 🙂

I have used a re-enamel kit for our bath and it turned out quite nice. A bit of elbow grease and took my time, think it was called Tubby or something like that. Cheaper and easier than replacing IMO.

I have an ICT with both rigid and Blutos (an easy change over) but have kept the blutos on for most of the last year. They are almost essential (for my old arms) for all day rocky routes (Torridon, Spain etc.) and I can lock them out for all my other stuff (beach, forest, moorland and hills).

I would try to get the set up with as much rubber width as possible as its easy to go slimmer.

AND couple of my mates have the Dude and its seriously light and a lovely bike. Although I do ride a bike made out of scaffold poles 🙂

I have used Sora STI’s with an Ultgra mech and MTB cassette for the last few years on my CX bike. No issue. I’m set up with road chain rings (double, no granny chain ring).

I’m 52 and its my body thats starting to let me down (sore back, frozen shoulder etc). I dont have any pace now but can ride steady all day, so no bad thing. Still do as many daft Mtb things as I used to, so not all bad.

    Hi Eddie,

If your in the Gairloch area:
Tollie path. Park at Loch Maree ( just before road leaves loch), cycle towards Gairloch, there’s a path on right that takes you up off road (can be dodgy to locate) and round down to pub. More road action up and out of Gairloch towards, Poolewe. Tollie path back to car (good technical path both up and down).
Poolewe to Fionn Loch (Carnmore bothy) Waymarked path into Kernsary Estate, at workers house bridge, go towards forest then look for right turn (very muddy path) on right, wrong road climbs up through the trees to the left. Right path is a muddy, cow trodden forest path that takes you upto a fence, then fantastic ST all the way to the Bothy. I went on and came back Gruinard, but Fatty does run bog well and still a good bit of hike a bike. SO, return same way.
There is a loop from Kinlochewe that goes up round the heights to Lochan Fada. Then up round past East side of Slioch and back along river to carpark. This has a little hike a bike but is very techy in places.

Most of the runs do include some Hike a bike but are rewarded by great trails. 8)

    cheers

It is always great Griffiths, perfect places to Wild Camp. Solitude has its place, thats for sure. But this time I went with my mate.

We also went into Fionn Loch (Carnmore bothy) and out by Gruinard River. If you ever get the chance, thats a topper. Although, no midgies at this time of year does help.

Should have added one bit of advice from experience. Be careful not to block view of front wheel if doing techy stuff, point and shoot has limitations.

    Enjoy.

Beautiful Weather but mental freezing when the sun went down. Fat bikes here too.

If you fancy some leg stretch action. Drive to Nethy Bridge and bike through to Glenmore Lodge and Back Via Ryvoan. As previous, check WalkHighland GPS Planner for map.

Should add that the entrance to that trail is at Forest Lodge (turn right at fence as you see buildings).

OK ST peeps, phoned the guy at KaTec and he was very helpful. So all sorted.

Just so you know the dawg primo was the blue one (2006/7 I think) but I took it all apart and got it powder coated orange (no I dont have an Audi).
Took a little care and effort but did a little painting on running gear etc and got spank rims (in orange of course) and laced them up to black hope hubs with black spokes. Hoping the final effect of orange/black is as good as in my head.

Thanks again to all for the great info and links, was very helpful.

Captain M, What is the details on that Lochnagar route, eg do you go in at Loch Muick or Braemar etc.?

    Coire lair/Annat large loop:

Go in at Coulags (on Lochcarron Road) past bothy upto Beallach na Lice. Over top, left and down to Annat for a pint. Then along road past Ling Hut to Loch Clair. Turn right and up the Coulin path until you get to a bridge that either takes you on over the hill towards Craig or turn right upto Waterfall and small hut (take this route). Cross river and then single track climb up to Coire lair. You come in above the technical stuff, therefore turn left and let it flow. This takes you down to the Station at Achnashellach. Along road and pick up car. Ledgowan for a pint then lots to eat as it is a reasonably big day out.

A lot been said before but I love this company and its ethos. Done from a shed a gives us all great steeds that are affordable and great to ride. I have a naked summer special that takes on everything that I have thrown at it (7 staines, golspie, lernie and laggan to name a few that you will know). I also own an inbred that has had many variations in its time (SS, tourer and cx) currently naked awaiting its next colour scheme. They may be made of gas pipe but they are strong enough for me and I am no light weight, in fact a bit of a lard arse TBH.
My mates all have or had various incarnations of them and have only good things to say about them (although the carbon one is still under consideration at this time).
I have tried to get cheap parts myself and been unsuccessful, thats life when you are afetr a real bargain. Will always go back and chance my hand again no matter what.
And to finish with, was out with my mate at Craig Dunain (Inverness) who was on his Planet X Compo. Great stuff lads/lassies, keep up the good work.

    Horses for courses.

I’m at nearly 1000ft therefore snow tyres on an astra is the only way forward. 😆

Captain, I think that you have been in your office too long as last year the majority of roads in the highlands were an issue. True that when you stay on a link road like yourself it might have been looked after but the reality was that the rest of us were sliding about on our way to work on a number of occasions. Good practice for car handling 😯

The fort to Inverness road had more landslides than major snow I seem to remember but I’m old and addled so I could be wrong.

Lost me guys where is Abhain Rath? I was looking to go from Dam up towards Gleann Lolairean. Could always work my way over to tulloch station and come back EMC's route. Does look like a couple of miles of open ground but it is beside trainline/river so should be easy to follow IMO.

Just looking at another option coming from Dalwhinnie up Loch Ericht and over to Tulloch the reverse EMC's route, along WHW up over devil's to corrour and out to Laggan. Any opinions?

Hi EMC, Slight hijack but if you are going this way it might help.

I have biked over Devil's staircase and upto dam and down the other side a few time (top run) but I am thinking of turning right towards Corrour once across dam. Does anyone know if the tracks on the map are ridable as far as Loch Treig?

    cheers

Cannock chase is ok, especially after a night out beforehand. I was round it on Sunday for the first time and the red run is definitely ok although busy. You could easily spend a couple of hours blowing away the cobwebs but as said beforehand it is not really challenging therefore big bikes are a bit wasted. I had a rented shot fork HT which was more than capable for the terrain. Enjoy your party 8)
