As Al says, one of our pals lost his yesterday.
I’ve just sent him a text with this link, fingers crossed it’s his!

Non lock-on for me. Having tried both I find them comfier and have yet to have them slip in 3 or 4 years of going back to them from lock-on’s. Lizard Skins Chargers on both bikes FWIW.

I won a Giro Xen lid a few years ago for having MBR star letter. Thing is, I didn’t send them a letter, they just copied and pasted a forum post and didn’t tell me it’d been published. I only knew when someone told me it was in the mag. Took a bit of badgering for them to part with the lid as well.

39.9mph down Keeper Lane if any of your South Leeds riders are in. Kept trying to top 40mph but never managed. Getting too old to try these days.

Try chipping off all the year old mud,you might get 0.1mph more

Most of that is older than a year Sparky, and it’s only that which holds the bike together ;-)

A DHF front and rear is my favourite tyre combination! A bit draggy for general trail riding, but offers oodles of cornering grip and comes into its element when pointing downhill. A very good all rounder weather and condition-wise in my opinion.

I use Soundmagic E10’s,with Comply foam tips.
Come in under your budget, decent sound and dead comfy. Used the ME Electronics M6 In the past as well. Over ear so you won’t lose ’em. E10’s are better though.

We’ve had a Cockerpoo for about 9 months now (she’s just over a year old). She’s been a great addition to the family. Great with the kids and full of energy. Incredibly friendly with other dogs and people.

Only downsides are that her coat is like a sponge so we tend to keep it short and that she really does need a couple of hours exercise a day (hey, we knew what we were letting ourselves in for!).

She’s also becoming a bit of a trail hound.

Cheers guys, some food for thought.

Interesting to hear that many people are running forks that are >120mm with no real drama so that opens up a couple more options – I’m now thinking Rev’s at 130mm which should give me a decent balance of ‘dicking around in the woods’ and ‘big XC days out’.

In answer to your questions Rob, a few of them are a bit subjective and my idea of being a smooth/light rider may differ from others but I know where you’re coming from (as it happens I think I am a reasonably smooth rider but hey, what do I know!)

To give you an idea of the bike its replacing, the old Cannondale has Flows, Lyriks (at 130mm), 745 bars/55mm stem and dropper post. I know I could put the Lyriks on the Soul and wind them down but it’s like dragging a ground anchor round with you on some of the climbs.

After being helped from the pitch having being two footed playing football, trying to stand 20 minutes later to feel and hear your tib and fib crunch and give way under your weight. That, my friends, was a shit feeling.

Another vote here for support your LBS.

Mine is surprisingly competitive on Hope stuff (Garage Bikes in Morley – Big Al is a lovely chap) and it’s nice to know that if owt goes wrong it’s only 5 minutes down the road rather than fannying around dealing with mail order.

I’ve used offsetbushings on a couple of bikes. First set on the Zesty were absolutely fine during a week in the alps but the second set on my Covert developed play in the lower bushing during the first days alps riding.

Cheap as chips but next time I’ll be looking at getting something a bit more durable.

Most played album for me this year has been Held in Splendor by Quilt.

Agree on some of the posts above, particularly Alt J, Royal Blood and The War on Drugs.

I love these threads, gives me loads more music to listen to.

One of my favourites from my grandad was “havent got ha’penny to scratch me arse with” in reference to been a bit short of cash.

Or when he was hungry, he described it as being “pined wick” – still no idea 30 years on!

    Thanks for the replies.

The kitchen isn’t from Howdens (although we did look at theirs and came close)but from a local kitchen dealer. I do have the details of their supplier so I’ll drop them a line although it is a generic “contact us” email address.

Given the converstations I’ve had so far with the dealer, I’m not expecting them to be falling over themselves to be too helpful.

whilst I agree that there are various bargains about I do think that new decent mtb prices have gone up faster than inflation and currency etc dictates

But that comes back to my original point that it depends when your baseline is. Since 2007? Yes, definitely. Since 2000, no, not a jot. Since 2012? Probably about right.

I’m kind of with njee on this one. My last hardtail ‘bike’ purchase was back in 2000, a Cannondale F700 for £1200. It came with XT rear mech, deore shifters, bottom of the range Magura Clara brakes and full in house Coda finishing kit, including their chainset.

A quick google search of Cannondales hardtails at a similar pricepoint brings this up

    http://www.leisurelakesbikes.com/p/18020/cannondale-trail-1-hardtail-mountain-bike-2015?gclid=CP_Dpr-U_MACFbPJtAodGjQAag

Arguably a better spec bike for £100 cheaper.

My last full sus bike was 2008 Commencal Meta 55 XT which was fully kitted out in XT and Fox Float forks for £1900. A similar spec bike these days would be circa £3k.

re: piggy backs, it depends on the shock I think. I had a push’d Van R on mine. Bit of extra weight but the back end was better than any air shock I’ve had. Thinking of putting the same shock on my Covert.

Hardtails a 2004 Cannondale that’s had shedloads of different stuff on over the years. Currently got some coil Lyriks (2009 I think) wound down to 120/130mm and 1×10 zee gear with 2007 (ish) Louise FR brakes. I keep expecting it to die so I can get a Soul but at the moment it just keeps going – its by far the best bike I’ve ever owned.

FS is a 2013 Transition Covert which I bought new about 6 months ago.

As much as I like it, I still keep going back to the Cannondale.

Not sure how much different the 2013 ones are but I can’t imagine they differ wildly.
