This has been a thread that has really helped and hit home.  Thank you to the OP and those that have contributed.

I just pulled the centre plastic big out of my old one, cleaned it up and fitted it to a new (same brand) bottom bracket.

Was a simple fix when I couldn’t get the correct width bottom bracket from Chevin Cycles.

Deleted it earlier this week after 10 years or so.

Had really enjoyed the heads up posts to support education. Some really inspiring posts and some things that allowed me to share my hobbies.

After about 3 weeks of cesspit posts, videos and views (and very very very little else) I canned it.

So. I’m back here more. So that’s good I suppose.

I’m looking at a Jeht or a Raaw Jib. Does anyone have any real world experience of the two. Know they are slightly different bikes.

Hi Dick. I’ve not seen anything but was listening to the Real Survival Stories podcast. It talked about a bloke who came off his quad in Alaska and used some to try and attract attention. He tied them to his handlebar and let them out. I’ve not seen it heard of anything like it.

I’ll have a go at making some in the new year, and post some pics. Hopefully what I create won’t look like rubbish, but you never know!!

Hi Dick. Yes, I could and intend to. Just didn’t know if anyone else had some decent ideas.

I’ve listened to a few podcasts recently (American) that talk about letting out a rescue ribbon. That you can tie to something nearby and that flaps in the wind, or can be set out on the floor. These seem to be a great idea and I’ll be looking to find something suitable in the UK.

If anyone knows of anything good let me know.

Good luck, please continue making Singletrack Salvation too! The smell is just so much better!

I really enjoyed 417. Did both in the same weekend and 417 was the more enjoyable of the two for me.

I really enjoyed it. I thought as a package it was top notch. It was good value, the articles were good. The photography and print quality were brilliant. I saved the first two of the year for my summer holiday, and the last two for my Christmas break. I will miss it.

I’d like to see some of the styles of articles appear in singletrack now.

If you look up Trail Finder on YouTube. He lives near there and he has plenty rides nearby. All with Strava and Trail Forks links.

I wanted to say that I really like it.  The images are fantastic, and the change from the paper and ink over the last few editions is really noticeable.  I like it, but if market forces dictate, I’d understand if you needed to go back.

    The font choice is fab.

The calendar is ready to go up in my lads room, we really enjoyed looking through it last night saying had we been there, or would we put it on the list.

So in short it’s a thanks from me, and yes, I appreciate the changes.

I’d second the tier1 refurb option. I’ve bought two for my two fake kids.

Lasted years and worked well for that time.

This is a nice thing. That I think I will use. It’ll only develop I’m sure.

The best thing that exists at the moment are YouTube ride guides linked to Strava (etc) the best of which is TrailFinder. His videos are fab. Very much like a video guidebook, find one you like and go to the Strava Page and download the route.

Hi same here for the no active subscriptions, when I have an active subscription (when you look at the payment tab it actually shows two going out at exactly the same time).

    Thanks

Well. You learn something every day. I always thought it was something to do with cold war runways and emergency military infrastructure.

    Cheers all for your help.

I’ve had it on a year, its done between 600 and 700k, which seems like a really small amount to need to change it. I probably am spending too much time at the top end, and Ill look to reduce the tooth count on the front ring as an idea.  I have run alu rings before in a 10 speed and have not had anywhere near this wear.

Yes, the SLX only has the one alu ring.  The suggestion of deore is a good one thanks.  I’ll look into that.

The chain wear on the current chain is fine, I’m quite good at keeping up with this.  Checked it last weekend and it wasn’t at 0.5 yet. Using a park tools tool.

    Thanks for your help

First half of your route was as normal 2 weeks ago. Doubt the drop into Littondale has been changed. But not been up that track in a while.

I’ve found RacewareDirect have a great range of mounts. Practically anything you could want. Have a couple for my Wahoo.

Had a small custom order I wanted printing recently too. Was a good company to deal with.

    Just some thoughts…

Volunteer in some capacity, ideally in a way that helps youngsters enjoy the hobby.
Learn a ride well so you can lead it and make it safe for others.
Take youngsters out on a good ride that you know is low risk, but they think is amazing
Whinge if your kids don’t clean their bikes, but do it anyway for them. It’ll save you money in the long run.
Long term loan out old bikes if your in a position to.
Accept that if it moves and contacts another surface it’ll wear out. Especially in the UK in winter. Budget for this and don’t skip services.
Don’t skimp on spending on helmets
Contact points are vital, buy the best you can
Learn enough about nature to enjoy pointing things out to others when you stop.
Understand you don’t need to be the best rider to lead a really enjoyable ride. So give it a go.
Seek out people trying new things with mountain biking (YouTube route guides, accommodation, podcasts etc) and support as you can. Don’t critisise them.
Engage with and support racing at all levels.

I’ve not noticed it, but I think the Cicerone book has an addendum because of this.

I had exactly the same with a pixel 2. Bought a new battery kit for it from eBay for 8 quid.

A few YouTube videos and it’s fixed (let’s not say good as new!!).

I’d second any suggestions that it’s the freehub bearings.

Bought this from the seller.  Wanted to put a note in if anyone searches him when he sells something in the future.

Communication was good and the items were dispatched promptly and arrived well packaged.

I really like the idea of the members area GPX download. I’m sure it’s developing.

I’d love to see it expanded where possible (and I realise that this may be going forwards only) to all routes in the mag.

So if I see a great pic, or like the article I can do the ride, or at least have the ability to add it to the list of rides I’d like to do but never will 🙂.

There’s a great route in the VP guidebook from Mirfield.  If you were feeling very fit you could start in Shelley.  A short drive however and you can start from the top of the ride listed.

I have a XL mk.1 I would change it for the rear clearance only, which I know was sorted on the mk.2

For 4 – 5 hour rides out in the Lakes and Dales its great.  Did my Mountain Bike Leader on mine, no stresses at all.  I use to it to teach MIAS on as its a comfy all day ride for delivering a course from.

    I live off coach road.

It’s a real pain some days. Bradford’s anti social driving team are ok. (steerside).

We’ve already called the police once this week while out walking.

Thinks it’s an area that always will have planks. Hope that in time they crush all their bikes.

It’s tough. The photos don’t work as well. But I’m sure photos with a different balance and light would. That’s just getting used to the medium I’m sure.

As others have mentioned. Rather a greener thinner singletrack than no singletrack
