If I was to buy a Triban 3 or A sensa that I’ve seen in Merlin reduced from 450 to 350 could I put cx tyres on to do say gravel tracks or just stick to the tarmac.

Not on a Triban: the biggest tyres you’ll get in there are 25c. Great bike though: I like mine a lot and I never thought I’d get into it so much.

It’s something to do with the plunger.

Yes I’ve heard of that one too.

Are you in the UK Larry? Did you pay by credit card / paypal?

Do you have a relationship with an LBS? Someone you bought a bike from locally / EU etc?

We couldn’t really afford a deposit then but we found a way and consequently got a foot on the ladder.

At the bottom, which is always a good place to start.

I could be wrong – but basically that’s what 97.5% folk one here are saying – in a nice way. And sorry about the Jesus thing.

Buy a flat / house to live in. It property values go tits up: walk away. Your first house is never an investment. Its somewhere to live.

    a well known problem.

    Which one?

I’ve no experience of Rose warranty dept- and generally that’s where your contract / warranty would lie if they were UK based, but all of the leaky Shimano calipers I had fail were replaced instantly with the latest generation (via Merlin – although slowly).

#Edit: Anyway I have no idea of Rose actually send them back to Shimano, or if you’ve put olive oil in there, or anything else, but I think your question really should be about Rose.

And lastly I’m not being critical or anything. I’ve got Reverbs from Germany that SRAM have honoured the warranty for – via UK shops with no quibbles. But you and I are both pushing the distributer boundary / envelope a bit and sometimes I guess it wont work out.

That’s really crap Paul. I’ll keep an eye out.

Do you have any photos? They tend to stick in my mind better.

I just noticed your points (about sharing the costs etc) after my recommendation above.

Just so you’re aware- if you do go ahead with holiday autos: you will have to have a normal credit card with a limit of whatever the insurance excess is (typically £1200) for the car hire company when you collect the car. A prepaid credit card wont work.

    Otherwise the cost sounds reasonable.

BTW – where are you going to ?

We go to Croatia a fair bit- going to Korcula again in 6 weeks. Holiday Autos each time with the full cdw refund thing has been good for us.

Driving standard is pretty random and you can have to show passports etc at ‘border’ controls in the middle of the country. Taking a car into a neighboring country is a royal pita.

Otherwise if what you’re looking at is too cheap I’d be suspicious (possibly a strange fuel policy or something).

    Oh, doesn’t sound good.

Well I wouldnt say they’re perfect (lots of folk have no problems) but when they go wrong the warranty service is pretty good and quick.

Also the usual mode of failing (IME) doesnt leave you stranded mid ride (eg mine both slowly lost / gained 2cm of extension play). The cure is to move the post up 2cm. Until it annoyed me and then it got sent back under warranty.

Hi Mick. It’s great to see you doing another one!

Andrew is staying with us at the mo and still talks about the “Braw” bike. The very best of luck with this one!

Oh – and of course – if there’s anything you guys need: dont hesitate to ask.

buy from somewhere that has good warranty support

Proper good advice that. Fortunatly – Fishers are ok with dealing with warranty claims for German bought posts.

But – and it’s probably an important BUT – you need to get an LBS in the UK to send it back for you. If you’re not sure of that – then get one from your LBS/Merlin/CRC etc.

And they do go wrong. Both of mine have had to go back. I dont know about the ’13 changes.

    Oh – my mistake.

I suspect we’ve different frames then – or you’ve got a rotor other than 160?

Mine looks like this: no adapter.

There are no spacers on mine (shimano brakes). A 2011.

I suspect youve dropped an avid washer. Sometimes they are conical so help with alignment I think. You should be able to get spares easy enough.

I’m pretty sure you would need to use them in pairs.

That’s only the second one I’ve ever heard of cracking. The other one I head of took a major whack on the downtube.

    I imagine they’ll be reasonable.

These are wider than other Shimano shoes ime. I’m able to use “normal” sizes for these, versus sizing up for MW81’s, M072’s etc.

Whoo hoooo! Welcome to the club. My 2p’s:

1: bring someone along who’s not a Hornet fan. They’re far more likely than you to be realistic.

2: I’d be amazed if you’re allowed a test ride when you explain you’ve just qualified. Unless you’ve got the full asking price in new £20 notes as a deposit. Or you’re 70 and a veteran or something.

3: So realistically you’re going to be buying blind. Dont pay much over auction prices unless your mate says otherwise.

4: personally – first bike – go for a reputable source. Pay a tad extra for dealer / 1 previous owner / ex demo.

If a reba / rev lockout stops locking out I’d start by removing all the air (assuming dual air: from both + and -) and seeing if its possible to get full travel.

Theres a common-ish failing where fluid leaks from the damper into the lowers. When there’s too much fluid / oil in the lowers you wouldnt get full travel and the lockout no longer works. The fix is a simple o-ring, and getting at it isnt too bad.

As for oils – a motorcycle shop is a good start, or CRC etc.

You will piss someone off : possibly someone who wants to pass on their gash presents from when they got married.

No matter what you do though – you’ll piss someone off. Dont sweat it.

As an occasional dabbler and having both electric and gas ones in the garage, the electric one gets used every time.

One of the down sides with the gas ones is that there is an exhaust from the burner that can do proper damage to your surroundings / whatever you’re fixing.

Gas is great for fixing stuff outside: like on the car.

    My 2p’s worth.

    Ok! Well suppose you did.

They offer to employ your services / traffic lights at well over the odds, you get a bank transfer to your account from abroad, a complicated scenario ensues where there’s a disaster / murder / …. / they have to cancel, or other emergency. You’re asked to refund 50% of what they paid – cause of course they’ve wasted your time you get to kepp 50%.

Your bank statement looks like their “”cash”” has cleared : but as it is an international it never really does. And thats where you’re stung – and possibly done for money laundering. They always want their share back by a non reversible vehicle (western union / paypal gift etc)

Firstly – yes its a scam. Yes yes yes.

It’s usually an advance payment / fee scam. Very common in the service industry (same email to me twice a week).

If your email is on the web you’ll get one . Do you actually sell traffic lights then?

    Google “travellers cheque scam”.

Weeks after they have “cleared” in your account they can turn out to be fake / fraudulent and the bank isnt the one that’ll take the loss.

Only take them from someone you know and trust I guess.

If I upped the amount I want to borrow by that much each month I could buy a house instead…

A much better idea. If your mortage co agrees with the figures for both the flat and house . I suspect they wont (treating the SC as part of your optional spending – if that makes sense).

So basically if you can get a mortage on the house with no SC it make more sense to me than a flat with the same monthly mortage+SC that you cant borrow for / or invest in.
