Wow Poly. Thats a really good summary! we moved to Scotland 15 years ago from Ireland and my summary is that’s it’s always a balancing act.

For us on balance it’s great. For my sister in law (hates the outdoors etc its rubbish).

IME – it what you put in to it – I know that’s a cliche.

Where you end up depends on work. Simple as. We started in Stirling – moved to the Capital as we spent 20 hours a week less travelling.

Either way – you’ll earn less. Maybe enjoy more. The latter part is up to you.

So Cinder – where you from? We’ve all been on here too long. Some have become cynical.

    Edit – too slow. Damn!

I may have missed something in the above posts but as I’ve been on a sort of amatuerish journey with this recently – bear with me.

I did try to convert a 3x to a 2x with bash and ran into trouble with chainring bolts. I dont remember the exact details (I’d bought an SLX bashguard on here but the existing bolts wouldnt hold the chainring anymore) but charlie the bike monger sold me some bits which helped. Although I couldnt get it to work 100%.

The end-game is that after I destroyed an XT triple crank recently I’ve got an SLX 22-36 double chainset with a 34 cassette (ie a “proper” posh-like slx double/bash but for silly cheap euros).

This shifts with my existing 3x shifter / mech no problems. The bash seems to stop (so far) any dropped chains.

So there will probably be someone along shortly who can explain a simple cheap solution to the chainring bolts problem. It’s just not me!

On the other hand my 1×9 is easy! I dropped chains all the time til I fitted a superstar chainguide.

#Edit – forgot to say all I do is mince about in GT / Inners really. Proper mincing though!

I think the first ever headset I owned that didnt cause me a van load of hassle was a Cane Creek S3. I’ve tended to spend more recently though.

    Thanks STR.

Tried some fat busting pills that my missus had and came very close to shitting my pants (think there might have been a dribble). It was basically a shit, but with a complimentary dose of greasy horrible orange liquid chucked in for good measure

I’m not the only gullible eejit here then!’

    Strangely – I do.

My missus’s neighbour. Son was a wee shit, but got bought a GTI after parents won 1.8m euro. The odd thing was that he still went out and stole cars / lawnmowers /underwear from his neighbours. It wasnt about the money.

More the thrill of thieving. He’s still inside, 8 years later, for fighting inside apparently.

    billybob -we’re talking different things.

Your’s is a doofer that turns off all power when the main power user shuts down (which interstingly wouldnt have worked with my dumb ass tv).

My doofer is similar to this (but I got mine from Lidl this week):

Mine doesnt “do” anything. Just shows whats burning money.

    couldashouldawoulda

No! It measures how much £ something is burning when it’s plugged in. On or off. Just a lazy ass multimeter really.

I’ve got one and like it. If you like flatish saddles it might suit your behind.

    2 things though –

1: it can catch in baggy shorts. The split in the back is the problem.

2: I dont know how durable they are for off road. I’ve totalled one in a bad crash (split the seat and bent both rails). This was a bad crash though – even then I’d be reluctant to use it for a week long “AM” event. However as a testament to the comfort: I went out and bought the exact same again.

    Government cutbacks innit!

    🙂

Some other “gems”: a HP laser printer: 40w with occasional 120w spikes(which I had on 24/7).

Apple iPhone charger 24w with nothing plugged in.

Pest ultrasonic deterrant thingy 40w (all it does is “squeak in a way we cant hear!”)

A security light in the garage – 30w when not lit up. Turns out this is faulty and leaking to earth so is now in the bin.

Anyways I’m now saving a couple of hundred squids a year. Result :). New bike time!

All for an £8 gizmo. And a new found desire to turn stuff off!

From the inside corner of the L draw 3 lines to the 3 outer corners?

Assuming you’re in the UK your payg credit card (presumably a prepaid visa or mastercard) isnt a “credit” card and therefore doesnt give you any of the protection that a traditional credit card would (consumer credit act etc). You’re still covered by distance selling regs though.

Basically your payg card is the same as sending cash in the post – so be a little more careful I guess.

We were looking at getting a Greenstar 27CDi for our 3 bed semi. Ended up with a 30Cdi for slighly less (more expensive boiler but cheaper to install – or something along those grounds).

Got some quotes (BG were so far off price wise it was like they quote in a different currency or something). Got a local medium size co in the end.

Bills havent come down as much as expected from our prev 15 year old one though 🙁

Otherwise – clever, quiet, near instant hot water.

    I use the

replacement velcro strap and bar fitting.

Means I got the bike mount on 1 bike and the ‘wrist’ mount on the other (over some old light mount I had lying around) and it takes seconds to swap the unit over. The bar mount works with oversize bars. I’ve never had a problem with in in around 3 years.

£15 is crazy crazy money for it tho!

    What’s PVR?

    Things like
    Sky+
    Freesat+.
    Freeview+
    V+

But the same would have applied to any settop box to feed the TV where it wasnt getting a freeview feed.

Minis (presuming a proper mini) get a special MOT as they know you’ll break down shortly afterwards and spend the next 11 months fixing it.

    The test goes like this:

    Are the hazards working?
    Yep.
    Pass.

    🙂

My only ever car crash was in a mini (not me driving). I’d only advise you make sure the fuel filler cap is on tight. They really do leak when the car is upside down.

I was living with my partner for years when I discovered she was sleeping with her boss. The turmoil that followed led me to meet my lovely wife. Chin up etc. There are chances out there. Just look for them and take them.
