God that was hard to read! I never knew I liked paragraphs so much!

I guess all that ammo has blown the **** out of your return key on your keyboard.

Still – top report. I only ever got to use an m60 and ak47- and that was a proper buzz in my (normally 22) world.

I can only comment on this after breaking some bones and trying to keep active.

Either is torture, a turbo less so:

An exercise bike (unless you spend a fortune) wont take any kind of spd / clipless pedals. The one my other half has ends up in a really odd riding position (weird bars, saddle moves in 3 inch forward / aft movement, height is changed in full inch).

A turbo means you can ride you normal position, saddle, pedals. In the garage. Cold. Bored. Gaining a few pounds was so much easier.

If you’re determined, get a turbo and a spare wheel with a slick.

Unless I’ve broken bones I’d much prefer to ride outdoors in a howling gale with hail at -10 than sit on a bike indoors – but thats just me!

Well done debaser. I was out earlier and came back with a “windburn effect” on bare shin. I hardly had to pedal the whole way back into town!

Thanks GW. Now I’m getting somewhere.

So I know I’ve got a shitty low link one – how knackered is it? A few mm in the middle ring?

Doesn’t sound good to me 🙁

if it shifts ok then whats the problem

Possibly none – thus the question. Not being cheeky, but it didnt have any play before so I’m wondering if I need to budget.

@GW- my earlier edit missed your reply – sorry

Grrrr- you’ve come back with a Q! I’ll have to go outside now and figure out which I have. 🙂

Edit – ok – the clamp is roughly at the same level as the chain on the middle ring, and the cable enters/pulls from above. Does that make sense?

tbh – it doesnt sound great. My hope front spins for donkeys. My rear stops after 2 or 3 revs.

If you can take the adapters out and stick your middle fingers directly in the bearing inner races you can narrow it down. Let us know.

    something like criminology

I’ve got a friend who couldnt wait to get out of forensics and crime! Now does well and enjoys the “forensics” of hard drive failures (non criminal).

Also I’ve changed careers (totally non-crime / death related). All I can advise is find something you enjoy (or come across as enjoying) thats not your main hobby.

Thanks guys. Some things to look into.

I know all about pushing! A few years back this was replayed in A+E with stomach pumps and liver tests. Even uncounsious it was near impossible to get anyone to take things forward. NHS kind of said – there’s a pulse – thats our job done.

Thanks Elfin, unfortunatly the condition means shes terrified of talking to new doctors. Under duress – she;ll tolerate her sister being with her at a doc’s – but then all comes across as pretty “ok”.

Her GP has prescribed her the drugs she told him she had before – but they’ll take a while to kick in.

Really we need to change tack with her and she needs something more – thus my req for a recommendation for someone to “talk with”.

Some just dive. Some stay up. Saddle bags make it worse. I wouldnt worry if its stable when done up.

snowpaul – they did the same to us – pretty much exactly. I think it’s their company policy to screw you over.

In the end persistence, and letter writing did the trick. Phone calls were totally wasted ime. Ironic for a phone company?

Anyway, write, threaten legal stuff (“after speaking to my legal advice helpline….”) and eventually they back off. Our refund took around 3 months iirc. We also got some bank charges refunded – but not quiet everything.

Never again will I touch them with … etc.

It’s even cheaper and in stock at actionsports.de.

You can use a shim to get it to fit your frame.

A new / not used one has just gone for more than this on the classifieds.

Sorry I dont know what mmx is?

Now I’ve seen some hijacks – but you get a gold star sir!

    For the OP:

I initially got a normal type (gold) wedding band. It was fine in the shop. About 3 hours after signing the dotted line it bugged the hell out of me. Back to the jeweller and after some teeth sucking and tutting it was cheaper to buy a new ring with a curved inner. I dunno if that helps. The old one went on ebay – got around half my money back.

    POSTED 1 MINUTE AGO # REPORT-POST

Thats desboys best post yet 🙂

I use SB8s DTC on my hack bike – mainly used off road (bridleway type stuff mainly) in all weather and I really do think they are great. But I dont do gnar!

Nearly like a slick for speed, a good bit of grip on kitty litter and a tiny bit on muddy stuff. Ok on roots and rock. Not too dear. Not too heavy. A bit of a barstewart to set up ghetto tubless initially but after a month or 2 – totally airtight. When they wear out I move the back to the front and buy a new back one. But even after a few years Im not sure I’d use one for typical Scottish “proper” off road.

Lasty – they make a strange buzzing sound on new tarmac – I once had an old dear complain how noisy my tyres were!

Thanks waswas – Ive taken the chain and cassette off to investigate and its still noticably stickier once I start to do the QR up.

Thinking about it overnight I’m convinced its got something to do with the scored / worn QR adapter.

I’ve found a pic of a new one:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=47535

there appears to be a slight lip on the inner of the silver spacer- presumably to press into the bearing inner race. Mine doesnt have this anymore – its totally flat – apart from the circular scoring.

Just for balance – I spent today with my 4 year old nephew on a “balance bike” who had never (literally) ever been out in the rain in his life. We sheltered in a thorn bush (right side of the road for the wind) and he was amazed by dragon flys, random flowers, road + tarmac construction and 50 other things just by standing at the side of the road! A couple of hours later we were in our destination cafe and proudly boasted to all old gits of his voyage! He now has 15 new friends!

In a few years he is defo on the touring route! He wants some way of carrying his toy trains on his trips!

A grand day out for all 🙂

Is there anywhere worth driving for 6 hours to ride for 2 hours??!?!

2 hours for the black!? I stand back and salute you sir!

We drove from the capital to do this as part of a combo trip but with injuries and mechs we cut things short. I wouldnt do it as a single trip – even Im not that crazy!

We had a post a while back about wave rotors.

They dont seem to agree with Oro calipers (IIRC) and or Hope hubs. The pads in Oros are really really small and the gaps in SS wave rotors are big. It doesnt seem to work well. I got a mad ABS type effect. I sent mine back and got a refund no problems.

Overall I’m a huge SS fan for brake stuff. And still alive!

    No.

    Simple answer.

You must spend your existing balance first.

I am far from an expert, but any fool can go flat out (his / her version of flat out) for a few hours. Sitting in a saddle grinding for a third of 12 or 24 hours without some previous saddle time is going to be sore: sit bones, cramp etc. I’d suggest at least some long slow rides a few weeks before.

I’ve only been once and thoroughly enjoyed it! I knew it was going to be different and it was. I dont know if its worth a 6 hour round trip from Edinburgh though – unless combined with other SW trails?

Duuno if this helps, but on all three of my RS forks this happens. Its always due to damper fluid leaking past the inner lower damper seal.

    Its number 6 on here:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rock-Shox-Reba-Race-O-rings-Seals-Crush-Washer-kit-/180658553093?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item2a1016c105#ht_1837wt_1139

    Symptoms are:

    1-lockout doesnt work
2-on air models-let all of the air out (of + and -) and you cant get full travel.
3- If you drain the oil from the right lower the oil will be blue, or a mix of blue and brown.

Really its a manufacturing fault – but I see it as a good reason for regular services.

BTW the dodgy inner damper seal is a standard imperial size. You dont need to buy the whole TF tuned kit or that ebay bit. 99p IIRC for 2 from simplybearings.

Lastly – you’ll need some decent circlip internal pliers. Not those universal internal / external wobbly cheapies.

I had to do this last week as a temp bodge to test something out. A coke can is far far too thin. You’d need a few wraps. Also it wont go far enough down the post for my liking. Carsberg export 50% extra free might be long enough.

In the end I discovered that Sainsbury’s “basic” sparkling water 2L bottles (the 16p ones) are exactly 0.35mm thick(which is whats needed for 30.9 to 31.6). One wrap around, some carbon nonslip stuff and it worked perfectly for a few hours.

I then got the proper sleeve.

Anywhere you can’t walk round after dark can’t be worth going to.

There’s no need to run down London, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Glasgow all in one go! 🙂

Seriously – it’s like Barcelona or London – be careful, avoid Brixton (for example!), you’ll be fine.

Depending on the time of year (sorry I cant remember but certainly the peak-possibly Christmas-ish and local holidays) there can a major wait for the Robben trip – sometimes over a week. You can book in advance. Otherwise in half a day – a wine tasting, the Table mountain trip (be a bit careful) or go and see some penguins!

Edit – I’m no expert – Ive only been a few times but come to think of it in a half day – a trip to Franschoek / Stellbosch (sp?) should be doable – certainly in a hire car. If driving yourself try not to return after dark for the first time (avoiding certain bits etc).

Generally youll have a great time – its not nearly as threating as you might expect and if youre sensible you’ll fall in love with the place.

ianc – I used to get this a lot and I tried all the usual Nuun tabs etc which help a bit. But basically my body is telling me <thats too big a change from what I’m used to>.

So Ive learned – get used to 3 hours. Then do 3.5 hours. Then 4 hours. etc. Soon 8 hours is comfortable. But a lay off sets me back.

Someone will be along to argue shortly.

    Welcome.

I cant believe that anyone with either the oldest, shittiest, steel, SS, rigid ,on-one or the latest carbon, Horst bar, whotsit, with rp23 doofers could have the balls to come on here and say hello!

    So — Hello. Again welcome.

All I can add to the above is that in a few years of 520/540’s I did have a right hand side 520 with awful sealing that lasted only a few months before grinding / clicking / notchy business started. All other sets have been fine.

Do you have a greasy gritty residue twixt the pedal and axle seal? That’s what mine started with.
