Holy thread ressurection and that’s a spammer. Recommending someplace off the M25 is stretching the “around Edinburgh” question just a bit 🙂

    What forks have you got?

You seem determined to spend money!

The rock oil stuff I like as the different weights are different colours and you can tell when they’ve leaked into each other.

For the foam rings RS recommend soaking in the 15wt oil. I’ve also used Fox Fluid – and havent died. I’ve never used grease on the seals themselves.

Following all that every 6 months or so – I’ve never had any worn stuff.

No experience of Fox forks – sorry.

My experience with solicitors in Scotland when house buying makes me a tad sceptical about some of their practices.

Was the Nationwide AIP direct or through a broker / agency type place? When we got our last offer accepted the recommended (by solicitor) mortgage place sounded good but the AIP had charges / fees not originally mentioned. I’m sure that the solicitor and broker and a commission / kickback thing going on – maybe just for a bonus golf trip or whatever – but it still seemed dubious.

#Edit – we changed to Virgin (an RBS brand back then) and he wasnt best pleased. Still all went through ok though.

#Edit 2 – Apart from cynic-al of course. Damn – I forgot what he does for a day job. He’s probably alright!

I’ve been to to the a reasonable chunk of Africa (I think) and the SW (Botswana, Namibia etc) is in a different league to the rest – economically and culture shock wise. TBF it only adds up to 6 months or so.

    What have you got planned?

As an ex s.w. dev (not games tho) – the coming to the house thing is a major alarm bell to me. There are lots and lots of QA jobs out there that certain mentalities can and do exceptionally well at. A good team of devs and testers (and their leaders) is the best way of getting a quality product out.

Like a lot of scam / duff jobs – if they want cash up front in any way, shape, or form – then its a scam.

TBH – I’ve not heard of this before – so personally I’d possibly tag along – but highlight the risks to your young fella beforehand.

SLX is approx 50g heavier for 3 ring than XT. Double and bash SLX is about 200g heavier than triple SLX (steel inserts etc). Value for money is SLX.

Crank brother stuff – is generally terribly unreliable. Specs wise and durability wise.

Oooh – now somebody has mentioned homebase – thats rung a few bells = that’s where our old gu10’s came from. Cheap(not) unreliable explosive crap! Rant over.

Kaesae – btw I need some bearings for a Yeti ASR-SL – the top pivot ones with the extended inner race. Are you able to do those?

Just in contrast to showerman – I got a canyon recently after attrocious warranty failures with a big name brand through my LBS (3 frames in 9 months that they now refer to the manufacturer and effectively wash their hands of).

I cant fault Canyon so far – everything goes back to them so there is a single point of blame – plus the user – I guess.

I’m still interested in showermans experience – and how it ends up. And also your health – I wish you the very best with that.

Its hard to get excited about such mundane things but I use one of these: around £30 (is that too cheap?): http://peripherals.about.com/od/webcamerasvideoinputs/fr/Microsoft-Lifecam-Hd-3000-Review.htm

Does the job well and reliably, microphone is ok. I can only compare it to the built in laptop stuff and this is a lot better – but no comparison to other usb cams sorry.

The thing with “social websites” including this one – is that some guff you posted years ago whilst stoned can and does become one of the top 3 google listing for said name overriding all your best subsequent intentions.

Apparently shes decided she will only ever make one album, and shes done it

Er, considering she’s already made 2… duh.

Well – that’s just chronic. I heard her on R6 this week saying this was it – she’ll never make another, and already she’s a lying *****.

Dont get me wrong – 6 months ago when I heard Born to Die I thought – thats great, but ever 4 hours for months on end, I share her sentiments.

OK – compromise – Revs and Rebas (ime) are blue. Lyriks and Pikes are XXX. Otherwise its pistols at dawn and you and I will both just be proved wrong!

Rob – I dont know why – all of mine from ’05 to this years ’12 (rebas and revs) have blue damper stuff. OEM and aftermarket. Where do you get yours?

getting crowded up there is it?

No – I was once asked to walk a cow downstairs, it didnt end well. A proper cow – bovine like. She wasnt having it. I never knew why til today!

Hi rob – the dampers in all the RS’s I’ve ever had have blue super thin oil in the damper. In reality you should never get to see it in regular services.

But on most of said forks – eventually the blue damper oil leaks into the lowers – causes a loss of travel and problems with damping. I use the sandwich bags now – the air and damper sides should be a yellow / yeucky usually. If the damper side has even a slight blue tinge I know the damper is leaking.

For servicing I use Rock Oil from CRC – the 5wt / 15wt is the same blue / yellow. Other makers may be different – but I find the contrast useful.

Her rich record exec dad will keep pushing her for his retirement fund.

Ahhh – so that’s where all the PR has been coming from!

Anyway – I dont care – I’m sick to death of R6 playing her every 20 mins so I now just tune into something else.

Dont think she will. Apparently shes decided she will only ever make one album, and shes done it. That’s all she has to say.

    Time to die.

Honestly dude – if it’s important to her – let her go on her own and you look after the dog, cat, kids. She just has to say that you’re working / doing an interview etc.

After near 20 years married – there is no hang up going to stuff on your own. Most importantly – let her decide.

Anyway – I grew up near that neck of the woods so detail wise – Westport is nearish to Knock airport. AerArran (and I think Ryanair fly there) – what’s your local airport? A taxi from Knock to Westport return might well (or just) be cheaper than car hire.

Anything and everything in Ireland is expensive (Government borrowing gone mad means taxes etc). Especially car hire. There is no getting around it really.

You can walk a cow upstairs but not downstairs because of the way the legs bend at the knee

    That explains a lot! Cheers.

That all sounds good, and personally – I’d be happier with a squishy sounding rather than deadly quiet.

If you havent touched the damper – the sound must be oil in the lowers which can only be good.

A handy hint I’ve found – as the oil in the uppers is blue and the lowers is yellowish – is to put sandwich bags over the lowers as you undo the hex / 10mm nut. The tools still work through the bags (if that makes sense) but you get to collect all the old oil – and importantly on the damper side – see what colour it is. And it saves your garage floor.

Anyway – personally – I dont think you have a problem. Go and enjoy.

I’m still astounded by Realmans original ‘defence’.

    Some more info would help.

How did you reduce travel – spacers? What type and how much fluid did you put in the lowers? How much came out when you dropped them?

Did you (have to) remove / change the oil in the damper?

It might be as simple as the change means that you’ve added oil to the lowers that was missing before. Any other symptoms?

tthew – Its a medium. At the moment it’s half a 2011 matt red front and half a 2012 black (lower swingarm only). Not the prettiest tbf. Before the latest issue:

tthew – I’ve gone through 3 Super 4’s. Latest warranty version is sitting in the garage unbuilt.

What I got just before Christmas that consigns the super 4 to the backup pile is a Canyon Nerve XC. Slightly over budget as a built bike but you could sell off the un-needed bits to recover some of the cost.

Anyway – a better bike in most ways – especially climbing. Slightly longer travel. Maybe lacks the bottomless travel feel of the Super but it doesnt split in half ever 5 rides so I’m well happy. Similar BB height.

Also they do a 30 day return policy.

Amtico here too. You’ll be fed up looking at it long long before it wears out (speaking from experience).

The main part of the cost is the fitting – most of that is in the prep. Just stick with a simple design that will date well. Karndean is pretty similar.

Ask the fitter for any left over “tiles” in case you ever have to lift / cut the floor to repair / access pipes etc.

    Skiing too? Double awesome!

I know – thing is nobody tried to force him to learn it when he was young so he’s got an open mind about trying it. And it turns out he’s ok at it! Oh and all his mates go on a school trip every year – so that’s the incentive.

£91 a month gas and sparks from edf on fixed direct debit for 12 months online tariff.

1920’s 3 bed, occupied all day (working from home). Modern boiler.

We occasionally fill in our own meter readings to avoid the shocker unexpected bill.

It was nice to see this getting resurrected!

    Anyway some updates since Christmas:
    – Andrew’s not got out on the bike much since, what with school, dark evenings etc. But he’s well chuffed that there will be 5 bikes on the back of the camper van this year. He’s got plans for the summer and is talking of getting a pedal bike (possibly getting ahead of himself a tad! ).
    – His confidence in balance / co-ordination has taken a real boost. He’s due back in Scotland later this month for some more skiing lessons.
    – Mick and his family were on holidays in Dumfries and Galloway so I popped down to meet them and did a couple of laps of Drumlanrig. Truly nice people. But far too fit and fast on bikes to be allowed out with me 🙂
    – I was meant to do a write up for Chipps over Christmas – but didnt get a chance and then I put it on the long finger. I’ll put that right shortly.

Anyway – thanks again to all involved: it was great and the result makes it most worthwhile.

In a cosseted sub-session that doesnt ring any alarms at all. But the price of that is well dodgy. To me that’s an obvious fake. Sorry.

#Edit. A £5000 watch for £80 and you have to ask. I’ve just wasted my time!
