At The Mountains of Madness – H.P. Lovecraft

    This is a great book.

Thought slaughterhouse 5 was very underwhelming.

    Superstar DS25s
Built up fine (once I realised they were handed differently to my existing rims)
Installed tubeless X-Kings on sort of ok – bead properly locked to one side but seems sealed ok on the other.

Handed differently? Just ordered one for my first ever wheel build. Any tips?

10% off with FORT10 at the mo.. £31 delivered.

Internal width is 25mm for reference to anyone else

I’d look at the fire-eye on Chain Reaction too if you are short enough. Tapered steerer gives you more options long term.

If you are going to the inbred, which I love by the way, then consider the bundle they do as well – seeing as it is same price £199 – this includes bar, stem, headset, spacers, seatclamp, seat and seatpost:

Yeah i notice this a lot as i’m between large/xl on most bikes.

Is the top tube suitably long though?

I am really tempted by these and in that size. Interested to see how you get on. Bargain for the monry.

And no battery included on the cateye. I’m afraid that’s a deal breaker.

When injured I love reading about other people’s lovely sunny rides. Nk resentment here, just a bit of jealousy and motivation to get fit asap. Do what the physio says etc.

Knee op saturday. Now on crutches. Gonna miss mayhem too.

Should have recovered in time for the wet dark horrible days and night riding from 5.30pm in the mud! (I.em winter)

Cutting it and then using a hacksaw is a really long and boring process and I wouldnt recommend it at all.

If not worried about paint too much use caustic soda. Lots of videos on youtube about that. I melted out a seatpost that had been cut off and hammered down a steel frame like this before. But wear protection etc etc and wash off any splashes quickly to avoid paint damage.

I would buy a parkwood, build it up cheap with either a new deore set and second hand finishing bits or vice versa, upgrade over time and then swap the frame to a stanton or something similar. Or they do a parkwood build with low end sram for £599 (or did)

Upgrading over time is ok, but unless you dont ride much, the cycle of replacements makes it hard to get everything where you want it to be to swap it onto a decent frame. On that basis, buying complete will usually be better – buy a donor 26er or something for drivetrain and buy a decent frame first.

Also depends what you have in your spares, if you have a lot of parts I would go with the frame first and go from there. Get some rigid forks on to start with.

jameso – any ideas on the prices for these new Ramin models?

Tesla evo rear hub is £120 if building a custom set from them. Seems quite expensive when you consider the switch wheelset with the DS25 rims is only £184.99 complete. Decisions decisions

What sort of riding? What wheel size?

I have the ds25 and they are very similar to a stans flow ex.

Trails only – nothing DH and in no way a XC weight weenie or owt. I basically plod along where the trails take me and odd visit to trail centres.

Semi thread hijack.. about to build up a wheel and looking at the T-Ready rims.. Any experience?

    EX23, TR21 or DS25 versions?

I’m fairly light so guessing the 23 or 21 versions? 30g difference in weight, but the blurb says the same about both really so next to impossible for me to decide what’s best?

Great. Thanks for the details. Read a lot that says similar, and with regard to surgery I dont have an option really as I need to try and sort my problems with the knee.

Three months would be great and glad to hear your recovery has gone well.

The other graphics are ace just thought that one was a bit too cheesey! Not a deal breaker just thought i’d add a negative.

It is crap as far as stickers go.
Important decision is green or orange graphics

Those charge tange rigid forks on ebay for 45 quid that are always listed would be long enough I guess. They have a massive axle crown from what I recall.

By the way, paint on mine is holding up well.

The parkwood has the naffest sticker ever though on the non drive chainstay that says “play agin ? Yes/no” which is the only complaint I have with it!

I’m 6 2″ on a large.. Think you will just about be ok. Running a 50mm stem but will change to 70 at weekend just to try it out.

Have limited 29er experience but it seems more fun and less road bike with big wheels than others I have tried. I know others like the kona honzo are raved about for having a shorter chainstay but its a really well planted frame is the parkwood.

And compared to my old Saracen Zen 26″ its definitely less harsh.

Frame weight is good too if you wanna go lightweight

I have one and love it. That’s about it really. Built mine from frame only with modest kit and have no desire to upgrade frame at all at the moment.

Full build deals are a bargain

Vitus only go up to large so if 6 foot plus not an option really

No idea how tall the OP is, but he is looking for a 29er and the Sentier 290 is available in XL

Sorry you are right, pretty sure they never used to (?).

    Agree it’s a great choice.

I like my parkwood – for £199 hard to see much better value if building up from a frame only.

firestarter – sorry chap, reference wasn’t to you! It was to why we were seeing pics of kona mountain bikes with shorter stems when the thread was about flat road bikes.

Wonder how it rides compared to others at that price, the giant above, norco fluid (slacker?) Or the vitus range.

My issue would be replacement parts and resale value but does look like some potential. Hats off to them.

    Ianinc see above

A smidgen over unfortunately. Still a limited pool of parts to choose from so this hikes up the spec (and therefore price) in areas we’d ideally go with lower level parts to meet a certain pricepoint. Mainly hubs, rims and tyres in this particular case. Lower level stuff will undoubtedly follow but it’ll take a while to filter down.
