For anyone interested he was found not guilty. Solicitor wouldn’t/couldn’t go into detail but I reckon he’s a very lucky lad

Just the bill to look forward to now!

His case isn’t until the 20th

went to see a solicitor who reckoned there was a chance with the right fiscal that if the mate pleads guilty then he might go easy on my son

Has to be worth a try, had a quick look at insurance over the weekend. With a clean licence he could insure a car for about £1k, with 6 points there was only one company and they wanted £8.5k!

It’s a quirk of the system that because he’s driving a moped on a provisional he won’t have his licence revoked. However he once he’s 17 and passes a car test if he does anything to gain any more points he’s banned

I’m not suggesting the solicitor goes to court, my son’s going to plead guilty. It just whether it’s worth writing a letter to try and keep the penalty as low as possible

Public car park so may as well have been on the road although but it’s fairly secluded on the edge of an industrial estate and they had no intention of going on the actual road

That’s the kind of info I’m looking for, if the Judge doesn’t have any wiggle room on the sentence there seems little point employing a solicitor.

Cycling up a roundabout on a dual carriageway where a third filter lane opens up to the left for people going that direction. I’m going straight on and always move to the centre of the road a): to stop cars/lorries trying to overtake me and get back into the lane again before the roundabout (doesn’t always work, they still try!) and b): anything behind me going left can get into the filter lane quicker.

I’m at the roundabout waiting for a gap when a car pulls up next to me in the filter lane

Him – “You should have signalled”

    Me – “Why?”

Him – “Because you moved over!”

Me – “I’m in the same lane!”

Him – “Yes – but you should have signalled”

Me – “And exactly what signal do I give for moving over in the same lane that doesn’t make a driver in the right hand lane think I’m turning right?

Him – Harrumphs and drives off

Don’t forget your fuel consumption will virtually halve if you’re travelling any distance, that’s what made me finally give up on ours. By the time I’d counted everything up including the hassle factor it made more sense to stay in a static with lots more room and separate bedrooms as the kids got older

Do you know the difference between a Joiner and a Carpenter?

One works with wood and the other paints cars (works better in a Scottish accent)

    I’ll get my coat…………..

Conversely my Daughter’s just got a 1.4 for her first car and she likes it, cheap to buy and cheap to insure. I can kinda see where Muzz is coming from but it’s all about expectations. I’ve a Doblo which has served me well for the last couple of years. They’re not the fanciest of cars but they do what we want them to and have been reliable so far

What’s the score with gift-aid? Went to donate and add gift-aid but one of the check boxes says ‘I am not making a donation as part of a sweepstake, raffle or lottery’

Just checking you’re not making potential trouble for yourself as much as anything

    THANK YOU DrP!!

I’ve held off from posting on here that I bought one of these but was frankly underwhelmed by its performance. Watched DrP’s video and thought it sounded different to mine and was working better so watched a couple of YouTube videos and saw one that mentioned a high/low pressure switch. Checked the instructions and yep, I never even noticed there was a switch and I’ve been using mine on low pressure since I got it!

I’ve had the faceplate changed etc. The problem is we’re literally miles from the exchange with very little chance of fibre making it even to the exchange anytime soon. I’ve made contact with the local WISP (wireless internet service provider) and there’s a good chance I can get it but I’d be looking at ~£700 just to get it installed, which I’d be willing to pay for a decent service. I can’t find much in the in the way of reviews so just looking for some real world experiences

Any french speakers able to give an explanation as to why the biker was getting a gendarme escort in the second half of the video?

A coward? – I wouldn’t say so, there’s no point in getting a hiding whilst cycling to work. I’ve had a couple of drivers get out of their cars to me but thankfully I’ve never felt truly threatened. I’d do the same as you if I thought I was in real danger

Landcruisers here too, mostly commuting, some bike packing, even some actual CX. Cheap as chips, tough as old boots, not brilliant at any one thing but good enough at everything to justify not swapping tyres

My 6 battery life became very poor, took it into Apple who insisted the battery was ok and it must have been something wrong with the main board. Claimed on my insurance in the end and got a new phone. Probably worth taking it to the Genius Bar and see what they say

I’ve done exactly that at a couple of junctions for a few years. First time I did it the farmer headed my way and I thought ‘oh-oh, here we go!’ But he actually thanked me. Don’t know how it works round your way but don’t the verges belong to the council anyway?

Mine’s a ’57 1.9 JTD with 170,000 miles. I think it’s great, pretty nippy for a diesel. Just had the clutch done but it’s an ex-taxi so not complaining considering the amount of miles. Normally run with back seats out for bike carrying duties but even with the seats in I can hold a bike and enough luggage for a family of 4 for a fortnight in the ‘boot’

The only thing I hate is the accelerator pedal, it sits very high and it’s just about impossible to get my right foot comfy

I’m no expert on 27.5″ but I’ve got a 26 x 2.2 Rubber Queen on a mk1 Flow on mine and there’s about 10mm clearance to the swing arm. I think you’ll struggle TBH

A lad I used to work with was a nice bloke but liked a drink and would frequently be off on a Monday after a drunken weekend. One day the manager asked him “why do you only work 4 days a week?”

    The reply – “because I can’t live on 3”

You need to be the registered keeper to insure the car.

    That’s not correct surely?

Just went to look at Evans for the Louis Garneau boots I use. They’re sold out but I see they’ve got the Northwaves on clearance at £98 – decent sizes left too!

We did Velocity in October. Pricey, yes, but I think it’s pitched about right, they’ve quite a few staff and a new visitor centre going up. You do a smaller slide first as a ‘warm up’, I think we were there nearly 2 hours in total. I’m happy I did it and I’m a stingy old Scotsman

Not sure how busy it is just now but booking was essential back then and the Welsh kids weren’t even on holiday.

    Lots of good advice above

Waterproof winter boots are handy at this time of year for keeping the tootsies comfy, I’m still commuting in shorts just now, if your hands and feet are warm you can cope with the cold

Be prepared for all your non-cycling colleagues staring at you in disbelief as you wander in/out in SPD’s etc.

Oh, and despite every protest that it’s not a race, if you meet another bike it’s ALWAYS a race!

Those of you that have filled out the forms (which seem to be pretty standard across the board) – what’s the best answer to the question ‘why are you now unhappy with the policy?’ (or words to that effect) if you’re just claiming on the off-chance?

‘because I’m hoping you’ll refund me a shed load of money’ doesn’t strike me as the right one!

Any free hub like that I’ve ever removed has been 11mm (7/16″)hex

Sometimes the new freehub comes with a hex bit
