I have been watching this thread with interest as the missus mother is bipolar manic.

However the best thing about the thread is people are talking about a subject which to some is personal but to many is pretty misunderstood

    :-)

I did read somewhere about excercise and some kind of hormone serotonin maybe

well biking aint a bad thing if your depressed

wasn’t there a thing on tv that said about 90 percent of notes in the UK had traces of the old columbian marching powder on em as well as that rather dodgy germ that lives on money too

podge i used solidworks for 12 years + first place was at mountain cycle

If you can use solidworks you will have no problem picking up any other 3d package It depends what you want to do for a job (industry wise)the Military or motorsports companies I have worked in use UG or Catia ,I personally use UG now because it does my main stuff really well .But that was based purely on what i want it to do

people have personal preferences based on what they learned first

the thing i like most about solidworks is the “I know engine” which sits quietly behind the front end …it knows when your having a shitty day and when to quit immediately before you press the save button

will allow you to get some kind of result wether its right or not is a completely different subject

there were some free 3d packages out there like alibre or co create and even then i think you can still buy the personal learning editions of solidworks or pro e or something

if i recall bikecad is like a java based thing that lives on the web unless you buy bikecad pro which lives on your computer or something

im not sure you can export from it but bikecad pro will export to dxf which autocad can then read

I think people are now more open to differing frame materials in general providing you can stay away from the marketing BS that for some reason comes in spades with bicycles

Correct me if im wrong but in peoples minds carbon brings ultralight blah de blah to the table thats fine but theres always the design intent of the frame if its sub 3.5 lbs its maybe not going to last forever and doing 5 foot drops maybe wasn’t its intended application

if for example people say I want a super tough 4.5lb hardtail I think that is now possible with carbon and the factor of safety that extra fibre brings there are lots of arguments for and against and im not convinced there will never be a fear factor with composites in general

impact resistance is a favourite one but steel frames puncture on rocks head tubes come clean off and butts fail(literally)its a similar story with many frames and most materials …theres a horror story out there!!

I remember something that wrings in my mind no matter what im designing and that is that theres no such thing as a bad material its more to do with the application of that material

Im more fascinated with peoples perceptions than anything else and this thread is pretty good at outlining the main thoughts

The real problem isn’t the material its educating people who are scared by the old wives tales ,theres always someone who knows someone who had a bad experience

at the curret rate CEN tasting is going steel bikes are coming in at 5 lbs plus thats a hell of a lot of carbon fibre to go play with …

I can safely say change to a positive direction its scary at first but i am so much happier now…on the other hand it could have been a disaster

I used to go to work and get to play with some pretty cool stuff and sure I got paid a lot too.For some reason i assumed earning as much as i could made me happy

It sounds like a dream position but on a personal level I have changed in the past 10 years if that make sense I think people change throughout their lives without noticing it !!!my values aren’t the same as they were 10 years ago and im far happier now not being stressed and not working 60 hours a week .

    Im 34 this year

you said the pin had bent in your post that shank or non threaded section adds a lot of strength to a bolt in this type of design

it would take a long time to go into the science behind fasteners but bolts aren’t just bolts and are designed to do different things despite just being a bit of threded bar with a head on it

Ideally you need ultrasound to show flaws or cracks in composites

dont use a bolt that is threaded along its entire length for this
take the good pin to your local machinist with a crate of beer for the gaffer and speak nicely to him

    A serious question now

watching the news at the moment and report sates

leading expert says its not that serious now!!!

now based on previous death threats from the WHO that Sars and Bird Flu were going to kill us all..and it didn’t !!!

does this now mean that with it not being so serious ..we are all knackered

J I actually started my bike design career in the USA as at the time I started out over 15 years ago the industry in the UK was impossible to get a job in ,couple that with the fact I was racing bikes and was thinking there was a career in it ,was my main focus.

go over to frameforum it should answer all

broken down simply its a set of tubes welded together by one guy or another b

its very personal to some people and opinions vary …but for me its about fitting you perfectly .bike fitting is sometimes a bit nick pickety if you dont fit into the correct size slot

the second is that the guy building the frame will hopefully have some passion in handbuilding mitreing and welding (or more traditionally) brazing the frame then rounding the fillets to perfection..some builders are so good at fillet brazing only minor cosmetic touch up is needed …im sure your wondering how this impresses people but some geeky types do like to feel fillets. Its made by hand from tubes to boxing it up

i do think the chiwanese can do some pretty amazing production stuff …like welding

thirdly you no know one else will have a bike like yours unless it gets nicked and be prepared to wait for your handcrafted bike frame..some niche builders have 5 month waiting list if not longer

A while ago i toyed with the idea of doing custom carbon frames ..ie done properly but kind of kept getting sidetracked

run parralels or bootcamp on the mac and instaal windoze …this gives you access to all kinds of pc engineering type software solidworks runs on it …tried and tested Unigraphics runs natively on a mac but you wll need very deep pockets if your serious…maybe at a later date

The GT cards are actually quadro cards with the features locked off

look it up on the web there used to be software mods to fully unlock the features but now you need to hack your Quadro card by physically soldering a few bits and bobs on but quadro cards arent so expensive on the bay anymore
