theres a shop in penistone thats doing entire xtr groups for 600 quid
and xt ones for 330 however those avids are cheapish

is CRC much cheaper in reality than yer local shop

It seems to have lost something these days …maybe riding something too much is what does it?

no problem with the ones i have here

however maybe talk nicely to specialized explain you are slightly miffed about said wheel being a bit naffer than the cheapo wheels and not being up to your expectations

they might just send you a new un they might say blow your tyres up a bit more either way if it happens twice its a more valid view that the wheel might be so so rather than great

for some mythical reason things just dont work for some people for some reason

i heard somewhere there might be stainless mtb frames kicking about …i like the sound of it ….or at least the theory …lol

Composites and design stuff mostly things that are expensive if they break…some is related to bikes tho

im not a fan of lugs …but as usual it was a supposedly readily producable thing which once the company who did the prototype work figured out they could make a quick buck sadly put the cost up

    hora good idea

and i will let you in on a secret a wee while ago there were several of these mixed material bikes floating about in the composites shop without a nut or bolt or lug in sight to do this unfortunately they do work out to be very expnsive and the way to do it and get the bike to actually have a warranty will remain in the realms of its possible but why

there comes a point where its possible to build anything and actually make it but when you weigh up the pros and cons of making money ,if you were building bikes would you rather sell 100 frames at 250 quid or cater for the 5 people who want that strangely unique thing made of X Y AND Z and will pay 1000 quid for a frame that does pretty much the same

yeah brant theres a tons of custom builders who have fiddled with stainless before

in fact theres a few boxes of 953 and a couple of xcr tubes floating about in the shop if you want em

    compositepro

not really innovative theres tons of people done the stainless stay thing before

custom geometry on a production bike in the UK is quite interesting though been a while since builders did that Im pretty sure there could be a market for all the people who nitpick at the geometry of their bikes

I found replacing beer with wine was highly effective due to the anti oxidants in it,,,well thats the excuse….plus the new house had a wine cellar which begged to be filled so half with the bike building gear half with the vino

you can get 6-4 ti tubing still (despite the rumours of its demise)

its not seamed welded tubing either

im assuming trent 900 you have something to do with that little firm that makes wirly round air suck through things down moor lane in derby

best welds i ever saw were on the trent 500 COC

    it was a generalization

when i started riding people just used to buy gear and beat the crap out of it…twas a fun sport

OOOOH YOU need to definitely watch this space…

really this is one time i would love to get the soap and box out but im going to let the proof be in the pudding on this one for definite

the nicolai idea is great but it hasnt moved in 10 years and unless your nicolai your pretty knackered for designing anything other than uber fetish german frames round it

i like those kind of sites

    they are pretty funny

Theres another entire website out there somewhere that completely and unashamedly bashes the shit out of carbon and anything made out of it relating to bikes

then post lots of no carbon anything breakages ooooer the irony of it

I lived in spain when i was working on the Americas cup and volvo ocean race boats…TBH its quicker to get to spain and back than it is to get into some major cities in the UK

I used to think like peterpoddy british born and bred however times are a changin

definitely do it you wont miss sunny England when its hitting 40 degrees on your way to work I can guarantee you that !!!

All CEN has done is make headaches for everybody not because its a test that they have to pass for now at least but

its a flawed test and there are many ways to get a frame to pass
on top of that theres lots of erroneous information from test houses that just dont make sense when you stack up the facts the best on ive seen was that just one frame out of 5 or ten passed …hmm but its classed as a pass

Its a farce and not very representative of a great deal when you cant even say the test was performed reliably

lots of companies are swapping steel for other materials and this could result in decent aluminium and carbon (oh just can’t wait for the carbon frames are shit comments coming soon)frames getting a rather bad rap

miffed because in a world where a chav can forget to do up his quick release and get loadsa money because they had the right legal counsel its can rapidly become open season on bike companies

I wouldnt worry about CEN at the moment its in a state of flux

remember the good old days when you just bought a great frame and beat the shit out of it till it broke!!!any frame that makes you happy

I think im going to set some form of bike servicing setup near sheeffield the shops are getting a right battering at the momnet due to crappy service

It might just work?? then you can bugger off up wharncliffe or langsett on your bikes…

6061 isnt a bad material at mountain cycle mucho 6061 – 6069 aluminium was used mainly it was cheap and good for what it was being used for and available abundently if we wanted 7 series it was custom drawn and 3 times the price

There are some drawbacks to using any 7000 alloys in the weldable range and more to be had as you get to near to the 7050 range materials which need to be doped if you want to weld them

6061 is a good tough all round aluminium it doesn’t suffer from some of the freakish occurences as with 7xxx material

sometimes even if your using 7000 series to get it to resist certain freakiness there needs to be an oveageing process to securely make sure it isn’t going to die prematurely this in itself reduces the materials suceptability to freakiness but also reduces its ultimate strength by 15% so its the same as not heat treating so its just a different animal…anodize it it becomes a different animal again

theres lots of little numbers after aluminium for example 6083 slightly different to 6061 but different properties

the taiwanese liked to get rid of the heat treat cycle its an extra cost
but then it also has its benefits
heat treating is a bit of an art in itself and writing off a bunch of bannana shaped frames isn’t an option really

of course the devil is in the details and you can design some pretty shit hot stuff if you know what your material is going to do

85 percent may just be above the 100 percent of heat treated baseline 6061
so in theory it could be stronger (sweeping statement not always the case)

theres more that comes into play than just the material each alloy has its own little idiosyncrosies that you need to be aware of beforehand

No sorry computer said no and went into the mode where 4 hours of 3d work just became a passing memory

Theres big moves at planet x – on one to really engineer the little details…Im still doing the thing at on one but Im the kind of bloke who tests and tests and test things till they are proven not only on paper but in real life use

The CEN testing thing is the big topic at the moment and even that is throwing up idisycrosies

but they do correlate with real world testing which is kind of strange

Im more happy at the moment people are showing an interest in the why and how it died rather than the old school way that products were just rubbished after all theres a lot of ill formed opinions which do get precipitated to become fact
