Thanks!
I was planning on doing what you’d done, using a ski pole and the handlebar mount – however, I wasn’t sure i trusted using that mount on a ski pole, which tapers towards the end. So i bought one of these:
as it can all screw together. Seemed more secure in my mind!
comedyphilFree MemberThe pole mount was done using a tripod-type extendable pole with the tripod mount for the gopro – it all screws together, so it’s pretty secure. I am planning in putting a leash on to mine though, can’t be too careful
That was all done on the HD1, the HD2 is supposedly better. In response to te comments above, I can only say that I havent had any of those issues with mine (turning off, not recording etc.). However, the point about not being able to see the shot can be an issue. Can be circumvented by purchasing the LCD upgrade though. I believe the new WiFi remote accessory that they’re making will, when used with the HD2, allow you to use a smartphone as a viewfinder, something that I know the Contour cameras already do
comedyphilFree MemberThat was done in Final Cut Pro X on a mac, although iMovie works pretty well too
comedyphilFree MemberYeah, I used my GoPro for a ski trip earlier this month.
gravity-slave is right, the videos look a lot better when you mix up the angles that you shoot from – you can google for different ways of mounting the camera. After I returned, found a better way of mounting it to the front of a ski boot using the helmet strap, too late for this years trip unfortunately.
Anyway, here’s the video – prepare to be underwhelmed (by the quality of skiing, but not the quality of the camera – worked very well in my opinion)
comedyphilFree MemberSlightly contrary to what people above have said, I would look for one in resort – unless you live somewhere that has a large number of ski shops and the like, the range on offer in resort is probably going to be larger than here in the UK. As with cycling, wearing an ill-fitting helmet is neither as safe nor as comfortable, and all the different brands fit different peoples heads, for want of a better word, differently.
Of course, you don’t then have to buy that lid there…. 😉
comedyphilFree MemberFirst one in here?

comedyphilFree MemberAll i’ll say in defence (poor choice of word, i know) of the driver of the focus is that if you were in their shoes, and you genuinely didn’t see the cyclist, you’d be as surprised as she was to find the bike under her wheels.
Not condoning her behaviour, but if she genuinely didn’t see them (which is obviously her fault, and she’s clearly to blame), you might also be amazed as to how the bike ended up under her wheels. I suspect that if she’d seen the same footage that we have, she might not be quite so surprised…..
Makes this YouTube clip all the more prevalent. Awareness and observation is everything when commuting.
comedyphilFree MemberKinda depends on what you’re after really. The GoPro has a lot more options when it comes to places to mount it whilst riding (helmet, chest, frame etc.), but the contour is certainly less obtrusive and (i think) you can use a smartphone to wirelessly check the set-up angle etc.
When I was buying a year ago, I went for the GoPro – from the comparison videos I found, it had much better colour contrast and general quality, plus it does other things like taking photos/time lapse photos etc. The new Hero2 looks even better – more options in terms of quality (720/960/1080), frame rates and recording angles (from three ranging from 90 to 170, i think). Don’t know how much the contour has improved in that time, but I’d happily buy another GoPro.
comedyphilFree MemberNot sure that’s right, unless it’s changed in the past month – I was there start of October, and they seemed to have a pretty decent menu on the go. Had a healthy portion of lasagne and a beer for about £7, if i recall correctly. Don’t know about the cafe at the Afan end, haven’t been there.
comedyphilFree MemberWhen they say wireless they mean that you still have to plug it in to a power source
Not sure that’s right – I’m able to sync mine, both from iTunes on computer and from the phone itself, without it being connected to a power source. I think what the bit about power source means is that when you connect it to a power source, it’ll search for your iTunes library and sync automatically, without being told to
comedyphilFree MemberNo worries
It’s easy when you know how, incredibly frustrating when you don’t!
comedyphilFree MemberIf it’s anything like Excel 2008 that i’m running, here’s how I did it:
You need to label the data sets you’re using, and it’ll appear in the Legend. You can do that by clicking on Edit in the Chart Data bit of the formatting palette in the toolbox. That’ll bring up a window much like that in the Windows version, where it shows where the data used to plot the chart is coming from, and one of the boxes there is “Name”. Pop what you want in there and it should change the legend too.
HTH
comedyphilFree MemberCan’t take any more – already seen enough incredible tennis for at least two GS finals.
I wish the crowd would shut up though – shouting “Come on Federer” as Djokovich was serving to stay in the set is not on. What do they want, better tennis?!
comedyphilFree MemberI don’t know how they can play with the crowd making all that noise. ON the flip side, I was shouting at the TV too, so I guess i’m no better! I enjoyed what the commentator said – “How many points was that? Because there were at least three winners hit there”
comedyphilFree MemberSeconded. I never thought i’d see Nadal out-muscled, or at least not until he was much, much older – some of the rallies are unbelievable to watch, I don’t know how they even reach some of the shots, let alone send them back with venom!
comedyphilFree MemberHaven’t been to Laggan, but i’d say the monkey is a fairly standard red grade trail
The Monkey is quite different to FtD, definitely tougher, but a lot more fun. I’ve done some of the black options on my HT, albeit slow and cautiously, but they’re just that – options. Most of them are only minor diversions, well signed so you can stop at the top and have a look before deciding what to do.
Definitely do the Monkey though, it’s ace!
comedyphilFree MemberReminds me a bit of this video (sorry, it’s not on youtube so can’t embed it!)
comedyphilFree MemberI can’t offer much advice as I use iMovie to edit mine, but this website is a pretty good place to start, plent yof tips and people on there who know what they’re doing!
comedyphilFree MemberIf it’s for Windows 2000/XP, try here
If not, they have some information on there about windows Vista/7. If it’s for OSX/Linux, then i don’t know, sorry!
comedyphilFree MemberAgreed, it’s awful – have no trouble with iPlayer, 4OD, even the channel 5 one, but the ITV player is consistently poor.
For watching the highlights, try tvcatchup, works a treat for me, and much better than the “watch live” option on the ITV website
comedyphilFree MemberI find that with the chest mount, I personally prefer to use the r5 option, as otherwise the fish-eye of the 170degree FOV makes my arms look ridiculously long. Do get a narrower field of vision, but once i’d gotten the knack of setting it at the right angle (upside down, tilted out about 45 degrees) you don’t really notice the difference in images captured.
comedyphilFree MemberIsn’t he also under investigation for the collision with Alonso?
comedyphilFree MemberI tend to use mine in 1080 when it’s in the chest mount, because it has a narrower field of vision (127 rather than 170 degrees) which means that my arms don’t look quite as odd as they do with the full fish-eye effect. FOV still plenty wide enough for capturing the trail though.
Oh, also, to get the best view when using the chest mount, someone recommended to me that you put the camera in upside down so you can tilt it forward a little for the best view, and record in UPd mode so you don’t have to flip the footage yourself afterwards.
Haven’t used it much for stills, other than making a few timelapse things for which it works quite well – i would suspect that if you like fish-eye photograpy, it’ll work pretty well!
comedyphilFree MemberThat’s great, thanks everyone – will play it by ear a little with regards to fatigue and weather on the day (I hear the climb up from Seathwaite is a bit of a killer!), but looks like the BW down to Spoon Hall is a good shout
comedyphilFree MemberThanks for all the replies – I’m actually staying in Elterwater, so was going to cycle straight from there via Little Langdale/High Tilberthwaite, hence “starting” at Coniston.
Back into Torver it is then! Just to check, is it over Torver bridge, then bear right to rejoin another bridleway just north of what’s marked on the OS map as Tranearth? Or don’t cross the bridge at all?
comedyphilFree MemberI used to have an ATC too, and I also got fed up of the vibration – no matter how i tried to affix it to my helmet, it always suffered terribly from vibration. I found the best way to use it was with the handlebar mount, as it was much more secure, but didn’t give as good a view point.
In the end, as I was going to use it for both MTB and skiing, I bit the bullet and bought myself a GoPro, and the mounting system is miles better. The camera screws into the mounts, and most of the fixed mounts screw onto things too – frame, seatpost etc. I can’t really comment much on the helmet mounting, as I haven’t used it much on my MTB – some footage on helmet here http://vimeo.com/19516530 – about 1m50s in.
Other mounting options in this little vid: http://vimeo.com/18991303
comedyphilFree MemberSpec is a little different now, but still a cracking bike!
comedyphilFree MemberStayed here a couple of weeks ago – about a mile from the trailhead, thoroughly recommend it
comedyphilFree MemberSomething i put together from trip to north wales couple of weekends ago, filmed on HD Hero and couple of panasonic point-and-shoots. Edited together with iMovie.
comedyphilFree MemberI like using bikehike, lets you upload and export GPX files
comedyphilFree MemberThere’s a pretty decent consumer gopro forum, I found this – seems you’re not alone!
http://goprouser.freeforums.org/stuck-in-tel-television-mode-t805.html
Hope that helps
comedyphilFree MemberThe advice that I was given was to run the camera in upside-down mode and clip it into the chest harness upside down, allowing you to tilt it away from your chest and have it facing further down the trail – that looks like what’s been done above
comedyphilFree MemberIf you’re lucky, you might be able to get away with just getting a new crank arm, as long as it’s not the splines on the axle that have worn down.
comedyphilFree MemberI had a similar problem, which eventually resulted in the crank coming off mid-ride. Problem was that the splines on the axle were worn, so no matter how tight the pinch bolts were, the crank would slip off – only fix was a new axle (which really gave me an excuse to get a new chainset 😉 )
The pre-load cap isn’t there to keep the crank on, it’s purely to get the crank pushed on far enough in the first place – it should only be done up finger-tight, and then maybe even backed off a bit. It’s the pinch bolts that hold it on. I broke a couple of the preload plastic caps as the crank tried to come off whilst it was screwed in.
Have a look at the splines on the axle and the inside of the crank – if they’re shiny, like the finish has come away, that’s probably your issue
comedyphilFree MemberDo you have a copy of your route? I’ve been over there a couple of times, don’t recognise some of your photos. Good work on the SS, I struggle fully geared!
