    Not sure about including

    And worse, Ammanford.

as disappointing as I’m not sure what you’d expect going there? (my family are from up the road in Garnant, Mum lives in Betws). It amazes me it’s as OK as it is considering there’s no jobs/industry around it.

Also not sure I’d be disappointed by going to Newport, again what would you expect to be there? Hasn’t exactly got a great reputation, suppose you might be disappointed if you didn’t see a fight or something!
(note – I lived there for 10 years and genuinely loved it, I’d quite happily move back)

Agree with a lot of the others, Brecon and Llanberis particularly when you compare them to “outdoor activity” towns/villages in the Lakes, so much potential you’d think.

Their gender is irrelevant, if they’re going to go on and on about how rubbish the coffee is, stale beans, how the nespresso-hyper-steam-machine is set to the wrong grind/pressure matrix, the crime of wearing the wrong cut/thread count/selvedge pattern jeans, can’t understand the artistic merit of a photo etc. then you shouldn’t meet them in any social situation.

    HTH.

I’m confused, I though that Donald hadn’t paid any income tax for eighteen years

Do those headlines say that, snowflake? I think they say “could of”, pretty sure someone on here was quibbling about the use of “called for” or something like that so we now know headlines mean whatever we want.

I’ve got one of them (actually I’ve got a couple of Kryptonite d-locks which I use to lock mine and the kids bikes with, dunno if they’re exactly that one). Anyway, I use the cable as well. Sure the cable won’t stand up to cutters etc but I use it to “pull” the bike in to whatever I’m locking it to, makes it harder to move the bike and so harder to get at the lock.

Probably not as secure as a massive chain but I think it’s OK in a convenience/security balance. Suppose it depends on how valuable your bike is.

I’m running home this evening after work with an OMM Classic 32. It’s no-where near full but I like it as it’s longer than the smaller packs I tried, so the waist belt isn’t round the bottom of my ribs, more hip height. Not too expensive and enough pockets etc.

I also have an Inov8 RaceUltra 10, which I prefer for running as it just doesn’t bounce. Bit of a squeeze for shoes though.

So how about a 15l version https://www.inov-8.com/trail-running/equipment/packs-bags/all-terrain-pro-running-vest dunno what it’s like but might be best of both wolrds – I find the newer vest-style packs are actually really good, despite dismissing them as looking like fishing vests for ages!

NHS isn’t in a crisis. Here’s a couple of articles from the BMJ.

    BMJ. 2017 Jan 17;356:j296. doi: 10.1136/bmj.j296.
BMA calls for urgent meeting with prime minister to discuss NHS crisis.

    BMJ. 2017 Jan 19;356:j283. doi: 10.1136/bmj.j283.
NHS crisis: where should any new money be spent?
    Kmietowicz Z1, Iacobucci G1, Rimmer A1.

here’s a link to some critical appraisal toolkits http://www.casp-uk.net/casp-tools-checklists

You’ll have to adapt them a bit as the articles won’t fit in to the study types but it’ll give you a standardised method to evaluate them. Start with them then we can look at systematic reviews, meta analysis etc. Might even go with some primary data sets.

    That OK?

Sorry to go back to cancer, but unbelievably Chewy you might be wrong and Kimbers is correct that cancer operations are being cancelled due to the (according to you) non-existant crisis:

    Emerg Nurse. 2017 Feb 10;24(9):8-9. doi: 10.7748/en.24.9.8.s8.
Pressures force hospitals to declare major incidents.
    Evans N.
    Abstract
More than 40% of hospitals in England were forced to declare major incidents during the first week of January, as bed shortages led to delays in emergency departments (EDs), thousands of trolley waits for beds and long queues of ambulances outside units. Even cancer operations, normally protected, were cancelled.

Good to hear that djflexure, looks like we won’t be out of pocket. Can’t help thinking it would’ve been easier to just not send them. Suppose if they’re picked off a shelf with the wrong code I can understand it though.

They’ve changed the description to gas tank – did say ranger when I ordered one at the weekend. Delivered today so let’s see what I’ve got when I get home 😕

Brands have value, Apple consistently tops Forbes World’s Most Valuable Brand list.

Just had a look at Forbes list, Google are second. What does that say about their brand then?

Yeah, I bought a climbing jacket and it’s not as good for walking to the pub in…

That’s not really what I meant though – if you’re going walking in the Lakes/Brecon Beacons/Peak District in Winter you’re going to want the fabrics used in mountaineering gear, but not necessarily a jacket designed to work with a harness and bibs, high pockets to clear a harness etc. But there’s not a lot of performance/technical gear for this, which is probably a bigger market than winter mountaineers. But that’s not a great image to sell though is it.

I guess it’s a bit like people buying a great big off road SUV for the couple of weeks a year they think it helps in winter conditions, when a 4 wheel drive estate car might be better suited, but doesn’t look as cool.

Which is a bit off the point of the topic, but not totally – I was looking at a 1992 Patagonia catalogue (yes I know how sad it is to keep them) and it’s surprising how many different cuts are available from one manufacturer – longer cut “anorak” fleeces and waterproofs for ski mountaineering, hiking stuff, MTB waterproofs with pretty big drop tails. Arguably more specific designs/cuts, but fabric and weights wouldn’t be up to much compared to modern gear.

Modern kit is lighter better cut and warmer.

its definitely lighter, and warmer for the weight. But I’m not totally convinced about things being better cut – there’s loads of clever things that can be done with minimal seams, bonding etc. But i think outdoor gear is more fashion led now.

Look at general outdoor gear, loads of waterproofs seem to be cut for climbing – short jackets to fit harnesses, massive hoods to fit helmets etc. There’s a bit of a fashion element I guess, who wants a rambler jacket, and no doubt fabrics are much better, but design wise I’m not sure the features are necessary.

Even more specialist outdoor stuff seems fashion led, compare a fell runner’s bumbag to those fishing vest things with the squeezy bottles – one’s about £20 and the other £100 plus.

Having said that, its no bad thing you can go backpacking with all your gear in a 30L daysack compared to a 70l monster 20-30 years ago. And probably in more comfort too.

Couldn’t have children, so adopted 2 of them. So I’d say our reasons were selfish, but everyone thinks you’ve done something massively unselfish, so its a win-win I reckon.

(serious answer – probably both, it’s made me and my Mrs happy, and I genuinely think the kids will have a better, happier life with us than they would have)

Got a pair and the flat sides OK with the right shoes – trainers with lugs like running shoes are better than flat soles (Vans etc). There is a bit of pedal flipping but I’m used to it so can’t really remember which way I have to flip them! Quite often do a half turn of the crank to get them the right (or opposite) way.

I’m a cycle commuter on that line (Oxford-Banbury) and you might struggle with the Cross Country services as they only have space for three bikes. If you can get to Reading you can get the Great Western stopper – not as many services during the day and takes loads longer but no limit on the number of bikes, just stick it in the vestibule, they never seem bothered if they’re three deep or whatever.

Just thought I’d let you know I read the thread title as “White trousers , wet weather advice please”, to which my answer would be don’t bother.

A bit more on topic – have you considered waterproof shorts over your bibs? I use altura attack 3/4 shorts with the braces on them and bib 3/4s or tights – keeps knees and thighs warm, not as clammy feeling as full trousers and no excess fabric to catch in the chain.

There are other ways of getting an entry that don’t involve charity fundraising. For example the club entry, good for age or championship routes.

As a slow, non-club runner they’re not really options for me 😀 Doesn’t really matter, I’d like to do it one year for the experience but it’s not the only marathon in the world is it. I ran the Edinburgh marathon last year, will probably look at one somewhere else next year.

I thought that if you were rejected 4 years running you were guaranteed a place on the 5th? Maybe this has changed in recent years.

Yeah, changed just as I was eligible 🙄 Oh well, as you say there’s always GFA (might involve just a tad more training for me!)

Yeah, also agree – if I’m running it it’s for myself, don’t think I’d want to guilt people into paying for me.
