Cheers all, looks like it’s worth a trip to my local tackle shop then.

Tango Man – I’m in North Oxfordshire.

Spinning sounds like the sort of thing I had in mind.

Sitting by the canal all day doesn’t sound great. Especially if I have to drink Stella.

Not especially bothered about eating whatever I catch, but not against it.

I like the idea of fly fishing as it looks a bit more “active”, but I think it’s expensive. And difficult. Not fussed about sitting by a lake all day.

Something reasonably portable (possibly by bike).

Like I said, I’ve got no idea about fishing.

Yeah, I figured the fishing shop would be good (I now know they’re called tackle shops 😉 ), but as I know nothing I thought I’d ask here first.

I don’t live by the sea, so canal, river or pond I guess.

    That’s my favourite Misfits song.

Not the Pat Smear bit, obviously.

Anyone used an inflatable kayak/sit on top?
I live near a canal so really want something cheap for a bit of pottering and possible overnight camping. Will keep my eye out for something like a cheapo dancer.

I quite like the idea of a packraft or inflatable though as I’d like to carry it to the canal and set off. Also I don’t drive so being portable is a plus. Something like this.[/url]

My recommendation for a cheap-ish alternative to the Laser is the Terra Nova Argon, don’t think they make them any more but they’re not too bad a price

    £90 ish from TN direct

1.1 kg for a 1 man tent you can sit up in. I’ve got the 900 which you can fit 2 in. Packed size is quite small, and you can ditch the poles and hang it from a tree too.

Slightly different set up to some of the others so far:

Went on a stag do on the Llangollen canal at the weekend. Got there on the train so was loads easier with my Brompton. More people than beds so I bivvied on the back of the barge:

Woke up to these inquisitive critters:

Panniers have got beer and crisps in them 😀

Used my cheapo decathlon 2 season bag and decathlon thermarest. Was a bit cold so ended up wearing my jeans, merino socks and hat, and Finisterre Etobioke.

Weather was great, good weekend, and I had a nice ride along the towpath.

I think I might do a bit more bikepacking with a folding bike.

Used my CC at CRC at the start of Feb, just had the call from the bank to say they’ve cancelled it due to an unauthorised attempt to use it.

Not really looking great for CRC is it?

Well, I guess not giving him a smack was the right thing to do.

To be honest I was more surprised at my reaction. I’m pretty calm and reserved so wouldn;t have said I’d be up for some Ton style action.

Surprised to hear people say that they dont find Paclite to be breathable, you dont get a much more breathable waterproof material.

Fairly sure it’s the least breathable Gore fabric (Proshell and XCR are better) and they’re all less breathable than Event.

Doesn’t make it worse coz it packs up smaller.

Oh, and I’ve got a featherlite which doesn’t keep the rain off but is good if you’re going quickly, keeps the wind off and is breathable (don’t make much difference when you’re soaked tho)

I find Paclite to be just as boil-in-the-bag TBH. I’ve got 2, a Mountain Hardwear and Nike ACG (£17 from TK Maxx) which are OK as they’ve got massive pit zips, but the fabric’s not very breathable. Took the scissors to the Nike one and folds up pretty small so it’s ok as a back up, but something like the Montane one would be smaller.

How about a cheapo roadie race cape? Designed for racing too.

Ordered an Etibioke (or however you spell it) Monday lunchtime, used the 3-5 day delivery, and it arrived on Tuesday. Really impressed, bargain too.

My understanding of evidence based practice (medicine) is that you use the evidence to make decisions on the bits that are based on fact (so in your case you choose the 2 candidates you’ve ended up with).

You still have to apply your judgement and experience to the fuzzy bits like quality of life (in your case what are the chances of the bird [soz TJ] getting preggers).

So I don’t think you’d apply evidence based decisions to your situation.

I had some on my road commuter in 1994. I hope they’ve improved coz they were rubbish, basically broke up/bits came off them. Was less hassle sorting out the occasional puncture TBH.

I’ve got the front and back ones, means I can leave one charger at work and the other at home. USB charging is really handy, and they’re bright enough to be seen.

Battery life went down massively when it was cold before xmas though (about 1-1 1/2 hours on a mix of flashing/constant) but usually get about 5 out of the front. rear lasts longer.
Not a big deal as they charge quickly and easily off me computer, but might be worth having a cheapo LED on you just in case.
