As most people have said, if you can afford it and want it then buy it. The difference in road racing is that you're much more likely to destroy £4k worth of bike on a Tues night 3/4 cat crit than you are racing fun or vet or masters in a mtb race.

If you dont want to pay to ride at trail centrtes, or FC land where a lot of hard work has gone into producing 'trails', why not get o n your bike at your front door and ride from there? Good luck Karin, I've got a dog and am in similiar circumstances to you, tho' thankfully Jim the Greyhound is about the most laid back dog you could meet. But he has taken 4 years to get him to the stage where he is quite confident with other dogs- was never aggressive, but would run off or freeze to the spot. (then some co#k in the park this morn had some horrid little terrier that attacked him , hopefully it wont set him back)
