Discovered that a candidate for the local council election lives a good 10 miles from my 'local' seat! Why not stand in their own area? an area they might know something about! So I voted for the bloke who lives in the next street to me. (Different party to who I voted for in the General election)

There were quite a few cross bikes built up for riders at Paris Roubaix but I pretty sure none were riden, they were for if the weather was bad, muddy slippy condidtions etc.

try a smear of grease on the inside of the dropouts, you can get a little movement and it creaks- you say tightening the QR quietened it down so I'd try this.
My tail of woe….creaking on bike was discovered when the Ti bolts holding the stem faceplate on sheared and left me dumpped in the road.

Sold my road bike a couple of years ago to buy a cross bike (Focus) and its great off road and pretty good on it- with road tyres. Just got a new road bike ('nago of course!) and the difference is alot more than I remembered. Road bike accelerates and climbs so much better.
However, I would be happy enough to do long rides, sportifs etc on a decent cross bike with some good road tyres. Just feels a bit dead compared with the road bike
    Hope that helps 😉
EDIT geometry is quite differnt (reply to the guy above ^)

As some others have said, start in an early group- make sure you point out its your first race to the organiser, and dont try and big yourself up! Take advantage of the few laps you'll have to get used to riding with others, if you manage to hang on when it all comes togeather, concentrate on staying close with no sudden movements or braking. you'll probbably get 'advice' from the other riders if you do something wrong!
Good luck, and enjoy it! If you get dropped this week dont give up, it may take you a few races to get used to it and learn how to ride etc.
The first time you dont get dropped and finish in the main group is a real buzz.

Mines being shut down as unecconomic, still millions of tonnes of high quality coal in the ground, better than the stuff they import- just to shaft the NUM really
Shipyards forced to compete for orders against foriegn subsidised yards- just to further shaft the workers really
The selling off, to her rich cronnies, the services of our country-pulling the wool over the eyes of the population by bunging them a couple of quid for 'their' shares
Giving people the right to buy council houses at vastly under-market value, without putting anything back into providing more social housing
    etc
    etc
    etc

could you take him to the local greyhound/whippet/lurcher rescue place to get used to other dogs again, before introducing him to general dogs?
I've a greyhound, and its took 4 years to build his confidence up with other dogs-though he's still terrified of dobermans for some reason
    best of luck!

What you gonna do when you get older, and cant ride as fast or survive the crashes as well? Kill yourself? No, you'll just accept it and enjoy it for what it is – a pass-time. So if your not riding for a living, or the possibility of that, just enjoy it- some days are better than others
