    Oil is oil surely?

Such as when you’re 100 miles into a dry dusty road ride and your chain is dry and grating, dripping some olive oil from your lunch on to it as a lube to see you through the rest of the ride.

Obviously it is best to use the correct stuff, but when needs must you have to improvise.

There is good mountainbiking about, but you need to know where to find it.

Have a look at cornwallmtb.co.uk in case you’re around when these guys are riding in the area, although the upcoming rides are fairly easy going.

If you’re just on your own I would maybe take a road bike, as mentioned the coastal road west around the Land’s End peninsular is spectacular and easy to follow.

I like 2. Although I’d say it could do with being a little slacker! The sketch effect is great.

If they’re not listed under News, then could maybe add a Fresh Good Friday link under the ‘Latest’ drop down at the top of the page?

Anyway, I usually find it after a little searching.

    I like it.

It’s not always on the homepage. Sometimes I can’t find it without having to click on the link shared through Facebook.

I have an SS Plug for commuting, I was just explainig to somebody this morning how it was perfectly suited to my needs. I’ve ridden many thousands of miles on it.

I’ve read it a couple of times, it’s a decent magazine. Really thick. They had a great Dartmoor feature a year or so ago.

I can only justify a single magazine subscription though and I prefer Singletrack.

I didn’t realise ‘douche’ was a current insult!

If the organiser has a village hall available I would aim to get a few hours sleep in the middle (on the floor with a blanket or something). I found as the night progressed I was becoming a risk on the road, but a few hours recovery and a good feed means you’re good to go again at dawn.

This is interesting. I have something like this. Some useful information here.

Saw this on the BBC. I ride along there every now and then, spectacular. Cracking photo.

I like this story, and I like the description of the whisky, and the look of the bottle. All of it in fact. I would love to be involved in a cask buy.

Unfortunately for me I imagine even the starting bid will be somewhat beyond my justifiable-to-the-family limits at the moment.

I’ve had a similar issue with these forks getting an airlock and losing about 20mm of extension. Maybe try the fix for that and see:

Turn the bike upside down, unscrew the allen key bolt on the bottom of the air leg, and inside you will find another, hidden, schraeder valve. Poking the valve with a small allen key or screwdriver would release the airlock and fire the forks back up to full travel.

The actual truth is that reviews in the mag are not worth our time … etc

That background’s good to know Mark. Everybody can’t be pleased by everything all the time.

I miss through the grinder too…It’s a shame it’s moved online

I always view it a bit like nosing around a bike shop.  I’m not necessarily looking to buy and wanting advice.  Sometimes I just like a nose to see what is around and whats new and shiny shiny

Yes I agree with this too. The one pagers also break the longer multipage articles up a bit, which I prefer.

I am pleased that there seems to be more focus on UK riding articles recently, I find them more relevant to me than many of the overseas trips.

I’ve not ridden it but I have ridden through the night on various occasions. It is an experience worth having, although personally I prefer to avoid the crowds.

Anyway, here is an off beat write up from the excellent but now sadly defunct Boneshaker Magazine:

The most comfortable bibs I have, but the stitching is not especially resilient. Great for £39, not sure I’d pay full price.

I bought some £10 clear glasses from CRC, and sent them to ciliaryblue.com and paid £49 for tinted, prescription, wrap around lenses. Work perfectly and cheap enough to get covered in mud and filth on a weekly basis.

I have a Mk1.5, and there is no flex when I do up the Maxle, the wheel just slots in and out. The clearance between the disc and the calliper looks normal as I recall, and I don’t think the Maxle protrudes at the thread end when tight.

I’m not near the bike so can’t offer you any measurements, but it sounds like you may be missing some sort of hub spacer.

I have the standard DT Swiss E1900 wheelset.

    Common sense.
    Alertness.
    Risk aversion.
    Route choice.

I seem to attract much less road rage than other people I know. I think I tend to ride sensibly and predictably and don’t antagonise other road users.

Does anyone really ride flats on the balls of their foot?

Yes, that photo could be of my foot. From the photo those Endura overshoes look perfect for my winter riding. I have some road booties and have always thought an MTB version would be a great idea.

Those aside, I had Shimano AM41s which did a good job, and now have Fiveten Freeride Elements. Both are OK but do fill up with water down the leg hole. Woolly socks are essential.

I did, and found out about Cycle to Work day when I arrived. Of the four regular cycle commuters nobody else cycled in today. Blustery but a bit of sun so not a bad morning for it down in Cornwall. It sure beat the soaking on the way home last night anyway. As an idea to encourage more cycle commuters I think it needs a bit more work.

Because sugar and corn syrup companies managed to work a 50 year con that fat was bad and carbs good, and still most advice has not caught up with reality.

I was discussing the relative benefits of green or blue milk yesterday. I had a feeling this was the case.

I’ve had about 5 micro leaking deore callipers over the years, lever travel not affected and still feels solid.
Interesting about the o-ring, I’ll bear that in mind for the inevitable next time.

I would not pay for it, or any TV in fact.

Edit: Other than the BBC licence fee of course

Most of my bikes are single speed, I find them sufficient.

It is a shame to lose some cycling TV, although I rarely watched it. A few programmes were OK such as the one with Andrew Dodds and Anna Glowinski checking out UK trails but that was a bit annoyingly heavy on product placement. I tend to check it in hope of finding something good.

Thank you for that, geometry charts are never clear to me.

Yes it’s a know problem with those brakes, and I’m never entirely trusting of other level shimano callipers either. The seals develop a micro leak when they get a bit old or dry and as they can’t be replaced it’s a calliper swap required. The leak is small enough to have no impact on the feel of the lever, but the discs wail, don’t stop, and have an oily deposit in them. Irritating as it is I still run Deores because they’re so relatively cheap, and replace callipers every couple of years.

Thanks also to the riders who always make my kids weekend by taking their offered sweets and allowing them to squirt you with their water pistols… they are still telling me now about what the riders do and say to them etc, so thanks for all being great with them…

Thank your kids for this because it livens up the grass sections, even if I was not really in the mood for water pistols this year!

Was anyone here riding singlespeed? What gear ratios were you running?

I started singlespeed but blew my freehub on the first lap and had to ride the rest on a borrowed bike, and so I’m still unsure if my gearing would have been a bit stiff by the time the exhaustion arrived.

probably weeping in a bush whilst getting overtaken by unicyclists.

In my experience if you’re not doing this at some point then you’re not trying hard enough.
