It’s an Exotic carbon 29″ boost fork by the way.

@colin9 the Whippet (🙄edit) looks great. Would the fork take a 29×3 tyre?

I’m pretty sure it would, there is absolutely bags of space in there.

I haven’t a picture to hand, but those tyres are 2.3″.

Yes, read like a straightforward scammer.

What does the whippet build weigh?

What size frame is it? It looks nice.

I don’t know but I’d be quite interested to find out myself. The frame, forks, bars and wheels are all light, but the other finishing kit is mid range stuff so that’s where weight gets added. I was trying to keep costs down.

It’s an XL. I’m right on the middle of L/XL so I gave it a lot of thought and went bigger in the end. Seems OK so far.

How does the Whippet ride? Frame quality ok?

I’ve only managed a shakedown ride so far, but first impressions are good. It’s lovely and light but I’m coming from a steel hardtail so it’s going to feel different.

Frame quality looked good to me, seemed well finished.

My mate told me about this.
Its basically sleeping rough a few miles from home, with a grand & a half’s worth of Alpkit gear.

    Haha, yes.

    But I like it.

I really like these stripped down phones, there are a few out there.

I’m too reliant on Whatsapp to allow me to take the plunge!

Yeah the photos are less clear. Clear photos are really one of the key Singletrack selling points.

I have quite a few, single speed really works for me. The only photos I have to hand are on this classifieds post (stealth ad):

    https://singletrackworld.com/classifieds/advert/sanderson-life-classic-steel-hardtail-currently-single-speed/

But once I’ve completed my latest build I’ll get some photos of that one up!

Thanks for the info Mark, it’s good to understand the background.

I prefer the thicker paper, but I’d prefer the Singletrack magazine continues sustainably more.

Noticeably thinner, I also checked it was the Premier edition.

But there’s the same volume of content so I’m not complaining.

I’m not interested in reading from screens unless I’m at work.

I look forward to a good printed magazine arriving, it takes me a couple of weeks to get through it but then I’m waiting for the next.

I subscribe to two mountain bike magazines, but I will say I had never heard of Dirt Rag.

Good bells these, mine works well for me.

I’ve already got one otherwise I’d be heading to the stw shop.

I went round a couple of weeks back, the main tracks were pretty good. Obviously if you stray onto the open moor rather than the tracks it’ll be a bog-fest. It’s been a dry week so that’s hopeful.

I have similar difficulties with gears these days, most of my bikes are SS. Changing up and down all the time seems a terrible faff if I’m just on a general not-mega-steep-or extra-long sort of ride. I’m out of gear changing practice.

Sell complete on eBay. If you split it you’ll just end up with a load of the bits that people DON’T want.

Yes, but you can then make a hundred quid or two from the main parts and donate the rest to the bicycle recycler for some karma.

Has anyone bought one of these? Or ridden one?

I’m pretty interested but I’m not finding any real world info.

Some good pointers in here, thanks for your input.

A Curtis is never far away from my dream list, I saw a lovely blue one the other month.

Sure carbon would be lighter, an One One Whippet looks like a bargain, but I know if it’s not a little bit niche I’m likely to lose interest in it quicker! Stooge might be a step too far though,  although I know they’re good bikes.

I’ll have a look at the Sherpa.

I’m keeping a close eye on the Classifieds too, there’s a nice looking Ritchey but it’d be too small for me!

Yes the Deore M615s are notorious for the micro leak. The lever feels fine but there is howling and no power when braking. Often happens after a period of no using. I have them on my second bike, after replacing the calipers twice over a couple of years I now make sure I give the brakes a good squeeze every few days when I’m in the garage to keep the seals active. I don’t know if it really helps but it seems to be so far. I keep planning not to buy Shimano brakes except they’re so good for the money when they’re working.

I have a 2015 Day One. I’m 6’2. The bike is a size 56. It fits me fine with plenty of standover for off road. However, I see Genesis have moved to Medium/Large etc. now so I’m not sure this information will be any help to you!

I love Dartmoor, but as others have said you need to be a bit careful with route planning, and a bridleway line on a map can often translate into a vast expanse of unrideable bog a long way from anywhere. I have found myself a bit more exposed than I felt comfortable with a couple of times up there.

The Burrator Princetown Sheeptor loop is where I would start.

I suppose, coincidentally, this is also where the Mountains are. So it would make sense that the mountain biking is better.

That depends on your definition of mountain biking.

Where in the UK do you consider to have great mountain biking?

It’s always important to have your bivvy bag facing the sunrise.

    Looks great.

I have a recent Camelbak Repack, really good. The fit works and I find it as secure as a backpack. It can get a little bouncy with a full bladder but that subsides once I’ve had a couple of drinks. Great to slim down for anything other than all day rides. I’ve had it a year and I’ve gone back to my Camelbak full pack only maybe once.

but how do you know when it is time to replace a road tyre?

    Increase in punctures.

Or a close examination revealing lots of pock marks, little splits and general poor condition. This becomes quite noticable with the poor surfaced roads I ride along.

Also many have wear replace marks. My Continentals have two little holes in the centre of the tread, when the rubber wears to that level they’re done.

Just for balance, I (and I’m sure many others) don’t have a problem with the ads.

Yes I pay a little a month to improve my user experience and support the site, and I read the magazine.

I get automatically logged out once a week, but then I don’t usually even bother logging in when I’m looking at the forum unless I want to reply to something as the ads don’t cause me any difficulties.

My SSCX (700c) is 39/18. By chance because that was the spare second hand chainring the bike shop had lying around at the time. I find it a little stiff on steeper climbs with difficult traction, but broadly very rideable.

I also have a SS hardtail (26″) with 32/16, which works well for me in almost all situations.
