No you’re right 2nd bargains are fantastic but alot of us are too snobby lol.

    haha 😀
but surely a bike snob would turn there noses up at a giant etc,
safe in the knowledge that they are riding something niche like an on-one

    “nice bike!”
    “yah! its a summer season”
    😀

after a quick scan around for £500 bikes on t’internet
nothing is gonna beat the spec of the above 2nd hand bikes,

sorry i’ll shut up about 2nd hand 🙂

    they seemed to like it,
the fork is the big weak point out of all the spec,

but I really wouldn’t be afraid of buying second hand,
if it looks in good condition then it usually is,
as its quite hard to disguise wear and tear on a mountain bike.

    the big things
    is there any frame damage,
    what are the forks like
are the wheels straight and true,
    brakes work,
is the drivetrain in good condition,

    simple really!

if your were to buy the focus off wiggle and you had issues with it you would still need to get your hands dirty or take it to your local bike shop

    I’d still prefer these though

the onone summer season looks lovely and always had a soft spot for the kona lava dome,

but i understand the security of buy new,

edit, if you put the cost of parts on the kona together thats a cracking price, brakes £125, fork over £300??? new, im talking myself into buying it

depends you can get a short travel 80mm xtc from paulscycles very cheap,

I’d personally go down the second hand route,
i dont think i’ll ever buy a new bike any more unless there was a massive saving,
i would probably end up changing the stock components on most “off the peg bikes”

someone is selling a kona lava dome in the classifieds, think he’s wanting £350 much better value, but depends if you know what you are looking for!
picked up an older specialized hardrock (before they became lardy) in mint condition last year with everything upgraded on it sids, lx/xt crank/drivetrain for £220,

    have both shimano and dhb,
as most people say shimano shoes are narrow, so ordered up a size,
but that left me with lots of toe space. still felt alright though

the dhb shoes were bang on the size,
didnt need to size up or down,
    i have these shoes
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/dhb_M1_Cycling_Shoes/5360033176/
i question the quality of the dhb shoes, (actually i question the dhb brand i have panniers and over-shoes and they aren’t the best in quality terms, not bad, just not great)
the soles started to come away
however i did used them to tour in wearing them everyday for 5 weeks,
so had a very hard life
but they are still useable and are very comfy

if it’s an old road bike it would have down tube shifters,
the cable guides on the under side would suggest not,

    a hybrid with drops fitted?
really reminds me of an old raleigh bike i used to have,
that was steel and had same cable routing

    nasty!
    hope it heals quickly,

    i’m still recovering from this,

cut through the tendons with a stanley knife,
    recover time 12 weeks!
but its given me lots of time to reflect on the wonders of the opposing grip 😀

not sure i’ve tried many a time on my road bike,
    without setting one off,

there is a camera on a long slight downhill where i could wind it up from a far
i think its cananbury road in highbury and islington (london)
its a 30 limit and i used to catch up cars or normally pull away,
but not once did i set it off.
most definitely would have be doing over 33mph (30 + 10% that’s what your snapped for right?)

would be interested to hear if anyone has,

cant comment if it’s good or not because never had to make a claim but the price is good 😀
and is sports specific, with different grades.
i took out a year policy as it was only slightly more than single trip

ive done quite a few half marathons,
and i found the one i didn’t train for, resulted in my fasted time for that course, (i’m a 1hr 35min runner for half marathons)

so dont do any training just turn up 😀

no seriously what everyone else says above,
its not rocket science to be honest, just go out and run on a regular basis,
build it up, running with people is easier but sometimes if your faster than the other person they can inadvertently hold you back.

    wow justa,
your probably not gonna believe me
but i saw one today aswell,

    i was so excited,
followed it and sat behind it at a set of traffic lights,
took a pic on my crappy phone camera, i’ll try and upload the picture tomorrow to prove it,

i never thought i’d see one on the road ever

i bought a x317 on a deore hub from number1bikebits a couple of years ago and it’s still running straight and true,
only thing i’ve had to do is regreased them,
but that was after a 5 month touring trip on my mtb
never had an issue with the ebay shop also bought a cassette and arrived quickly

    james,
i have the same frame from the same year,
unfortunately the XTC is just a super stiff frame,
and i dont think there is anyway of getting around it to be honest,
its a proper XC race frame, light and unforgiving. very direct!

i like the frame, i swap and ride my brothers steel frame sometines and it feels floppy to me and cant quite get used to it 😀

if you cant live with it i’d bite the bullet and change frames,
lots of second hand frames knocking about in the classifieds,

hairy chest do you mind if i ask you who you work for,
can do this off the record email is in my profile,
    would be interested to know,

did the instructor course last year but never taught due to other commitments and circumstance, but would like to get back into it.

    cheers

i thought even assistants had to have the training aswell,
so they could deliver the course aswell,
also need to be able to snake a group out on the road,
the assistant has quite a important role whilst snaking, even more than the lead i’d say.

    4 day course,
it can be subsidised if you find a company willing to take you on,
otherwise i think its about £400-ish
