No middle men, no demo, no bike shop to fix issues, no setup it’s all cost cutting that means if you don’t want it you don’t need it

+1. No one is being exploited.
Canyon works the same way that Bird, YT, Rose, Solid, On-one (sort of), and now Commencal operate.

When will Schwalbe make some 29×3.0 tyres?! They must have something in the works.

Interesting. I’ve never seen the Stance.
Looks like a lower cost middle brother between the Anthem and Trance.

I think the design could be used for the anthem too.
Point 1 is the interesting bit.

The GFs old dog used to watch something cross the room. Completely fixated, sometimes with her back up. Really bizarre.

I love the engineering, and the attention to detail.

Its when they go and take all these well engineered products and stick them on a bike(in the video) that looks like its been welded together out of left over waste metal from the Sheffield steel industry, that really lets it down.

What would you stick them on? A frame made from bits of fabric and glue?
If we’re being like that then the only frame that would do them justice is a Nicolai.

Of course – but how will they improve my ride? They won’t.

    Placibo?
    Visually?

I just cant get my head around that they don’t seem to come with a BB.
    Why? Shimano cranksets don’t

    Yes they do.

Edit: Beaten to it. All Shimano cranks come with a BB.

    You’ll;
    – have more money to spend on shiny bike bits
    – get up the hill quicker
    – get out for a sunrise ride
    – be able to eat more pie/chocolate/chips with less guilt
    or something like that..

Talking about OEM- I’ve seen plenty of examples where manufacturers produce the same product but with less quality materials. Tyres and forks are the main culprits.

If you look at ’14 Revs, I’ve got an OEM set that came on a bike with less adjustments than an RL and painted in a horrible gloss black. You wouldn’t be able to buy these separately in a shop. When I took them out for a service I noticed that they are heavier and the internals feel/look cheaper than the retail forks.

Orange spec OEM forks on their line up, hence the gloss black, however they do use the same internals as the normal forks. Not sure about steerer material.

Same goes for tyres, Nobby Nics are a good example, the OEM tyres on lots of bikes are made from the worst compound imaginable. It feels like solid plastic.

You wouldn’t be able to tell the difference visually with either forks or tyres unless you actually take time to look at them. I think manufacturers are often buying the image, rather than a good functioning product.

Anyway, I prefer the looks of the ’14/’15 Five. The brace and straight TT suit the Alpine more.

    2009- £1275.
    2010- £1300.
    2011- £1430.
    2012- £1500.
    2013- £1500.
    2014- £1500.

Are these prices for the standard colour & shock?

I had a small and I’m 173cm. No way would I want to go smaller on the frame.
Excuse the vintage photo- saddle angle was adjusted.

My Maxxis Ardent and Spesh Purgatory were very lose on my Arch Ex rim (26” and 29”). I actually took them off and put extra tape on.

I’d love a Highball that was a bit more affordable. Will keep an eye out for that.

Why? The expensive one isn’t particularly light considering the price, not sure I’d bother with a heavier one, plenty of other XC hardtails out there.[/quote]

Hmm.. Santa Cruz Highball only showing as Aluminium or Carbon CC, where is the Carbon C ?

Edit: is C more expensive or is that the CC?

Quick update- I’ve started looking at the Fiat Panda 100HP. They look like great cars. Similar mpg (especially on the motorway) to the 1.2/1.4 in the Polo. Larger and more practical size.

I’ve found a 2010, 43,000, lots of extras for £5000. About £1500 cheaper than the equivalent 1.4 polo.

Crunched some numbers and it should equal roughly the same, taking into account depreciation, tax, insurance & servicing.

Any thoughts? Am I a bit nuts?

I love my Stooge as an SS bike! There is no way I’d want gears on it.
I’ve been thinking about changing a few of my other builds to SS now.

To me this is the perfect commuter/all year roadbike. I would love to have a project and the resources to build something like this up. At some point I’ll get round to it. Surprised it hasn’t attracted more interest. Nice to see how hands on you’re getting.

How accurate was the frame builder? I’m looking at getting a Chinese Ti frame myself.

They did, but they phased out the 18” in favor of the 17”

A tea/coffee and fish&chips is our standard offering. Usually my better half and I ask what they want.

You can always pick those in real need out. I couldn’t believe some of the unfortunate guys in Edinburgh at Christmas. Lots with very little clothing in -1 rain. Filthy and lots of cuts. Feel really sorry for them. There’s just so much you can do

    So the new sizing on the new Orange 5 is as follows;
18” has turned into 17”- same TT length but shorter ST
20” has turned into 19”- same TT lenght but shorter ST
The 21” is a new super gate size and 16” has stayed the same.
It’s just part of bringing the geometry ‘up-to-date.
If you are used to riding 18” then go 17”.

Go for a public school role. They don’t require any teaching qualifications (although they are advantageous) and if you’re lucky they’ll take you through the whole process. Amazing community, great resources and lovely locations (normally).

Edit: depending on location, subject choice and age choice, I know of a few vacancies.

I’ve not got anywhere to clean my kit. I end up traipsing muddy kit up the stairs to the flat. There’s limited places to store a muddy bike (none of which are safe) and it’s impossible to clean. Then there’s cleaning the kit. That’s a nightmare too.

Love the riding bit though. You can only get so wet. It’s a great feeling.

Wasn’t aware of the 1.2 Tsi variant.
    I’ll do some research tonight.

So general consensus is that the Polo is a nice, reliable little car but it would benefit from a larger engine.
I might get lucky and find a 1.4 within my budget & spec.

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll get a test drive lined up I think.
I suppose if I just try the 1.2 and find it Ok then I wont try the 1.4. That way I won’t know what I’m missing.

Hmm, currently looking at the 1.2 S (60 PS).
These can be had for £6,500 with low mileage. My budget is £6,000-7,500.
Obviously I’d like to keep the price low.

Car will be used for short journeys most of the time but I hope to go to Wales (140miles) at least once a month with the MTB, as well as other adventures (Scotland/Alps?). I’m happy to sit at 70mph on the motorway. Slow but steady :D !
