Do it! I think a lefty would be very cool.
I have a fair bit of experience and knowledge. Let me know if you have any questions.

Here’s some photos of steel hardtails with Leftys to wet your whistle..

Photo from today’s ride. I’m going to try and get a pic in for all of these threads. Makes some of the rides a little more interesting.

The Pikes are a great fork (I’ve got a set) but I think it would be overkill for a Trail HT with 130mm.
I would suggest Revelation RC3 or Cannondale Lefty Max 130. These are both fantastic forks and probably suited more to your application.

If I was going for something special, as you are with a custom frame, I would get the lefty. Jon will be able to sort the HT length to suit the different clamp spacings.

I used to ride around the woods on a BMX with park tyres.
There is no way in hell even Ratboy could ride what I’m riding now on that.

    34 on the Orange 5 650b
    34 on the 29er Chumba
36 on the Kona Explosif 650b

I’m waiting for the Day One SS Discs to be reduced

Just had a look. Very nice bike :-) !
I’ll be keeping an eye out. Best I can find is £585 so far (w. optional 0% finance).

Bit hefty though- 11 kg or 24.2 lbs for a SS 8O

It’s not on your list, but one of the biggest differences I’ve felt was going from 135 QR to 12×142 on a hardtail. Same frame & wheel but with the different dropouts and hub adapters.

I couldn’t believe how much stiffer the rear end was.
Incredible how much less ‘twang’ there was from the back end.
It feels more direct on descents, especially berms but it’s also harsher.

    Ouch! That looks bad.
What does the other dropout look like now? Twisted?
Looks like your brake hose may need replacing too.

Would the larger gear range require a new freehub body? is this because of the 10t? If so, Shimano could still have a 11-42t cassette.

As you say, I guess that Shimano are trying to dominate the 2x/3x market.

    Good to know, thanks.
Makes you wonder why Shimano have limited themselves to the 11-40t, as the mech has clearly got capacity to go 10-42t. Seems odd.

    Fantastic, thanks Njee.
I hadn’t seen it confirmed the other way round until now.
Maybe I’ll run XTR mech and shifter in that case.

Yes, you’d have to change the BB. Probably more hassle than it’s worth.

Jamesfts, they look fantastic !! Is there any chance you could make me some decals? They’d be the same size but just one word? Happy to pay, etc.
I’ve been trying to find someone that could do some for me for ages.

How about a cheap second hand Shimano Deore with a N/W chainring?
Could probably find the lot for around £40..

    showing as ‘Im Paketzustellzentrum’

It means ‘package delivery centre’. German language has a habit of joining together lots of words to make one word.

As a buyer, I don’t think there are any downsides. You’ll be protected by ebay/paypal.
As a seller, there are quiet a few drawbacks.

I was on flats for 15 years and then got a set of cheap SPD because I wanted to try them. I’m converted. I love the SPDs. It just works for me. I used to dab a lot with flats on the steeper stuff (up and down) but SPDs have given me more control and now I’m smoother.

seen these wheels from superstar, are they decent enough?

Personally I wouldn’t touch Superstar wheels. They haven’t got a good customer service history and there’s numerous reliability issues.

I’d go for a nice set of Hope Hoops- ProII on Arch Ex in 650b flavour.
    This is a great deal

Tyres are very personal, and one riders perfect setup is another rides worst setup. The HD tyres are heavy though. Maybe a Spec Purgatory rear and Butcher front?

I’m buying a cheap set of RS Revs in 130mm, which can also be internally adjusted from 100-140mm.
I’ve already got the front wheel- ProII on Flow with a Spec Purgatory 2.3.
I’ll report back in a couple weeks.

I could use a RS Rev 120mm instead of 130mm, that’ll take off 10mm, leaving me with 5mm difference. Or I could run a little more sag on the forks.

The difference in wheel size that matters is the radius rather than diameter if you’re adding it to the A-C length difference, which means it’s only 15mm different.

Right you are! Thanks. 15mm isn’t much.
    – I should think that some offset shock bushings in ‘+’ mode would lower the BB enough?
    – Do we think that the headangle will be okay for the bike?

    haha, I’ll drink to that.

    Little bit of digging;
    A-t-c on 160mm Pike 650b= 552mm
    A-t-c on 130mm Revs 29”= 548 mm
    That’s -4mm in the forks but + 38.1 mm for the 29” over 27.5”, = +32mm..

How can I compensate for the 32mm?
    > Angleset +2° ?
    > Offset shock bushing set to + ?

Roverpig, glad I’m not alone! Exactly my thoughts. I like the rear of the Five but the front doesn’t feel as fun as 29”. I contemplated selling or swapping the Five for a Gyro/Segment but then I want the snappy rear of the 650b.

Nickjb, I have no problem with him getting verbal. As long as being verbal doesn’t become threatening. Hitting the car was out of order though.

Look, maybe you’ll understand this plain English:
If someone pisses me off I like to let them know. I know it won’t change them anymore than some self-righteous knobbers on the internet telling me I’m wrong will change me. But I do it and that’s how it is.

If some ‘self-righteous knobber’ hit the back of my girlfriends car whilst shouting abuse when she didn’t realise what she did may be dangerous, she would be very upset and shaken.

There was no reason for you hitting that persons car, no matter how light. You had plenty of space to brake. I assume you shout and hit your child if he cuts you up on a cycle ride? I guess you hit and shout at other riders if they overtake you at the trail centre too? And your boss if he ‘pisses you off’? How about in a car if a cyclist cuts you up? Where does it end? You’ve got some issues

When I was a kid I did the whole confirmation thing.
Our local Vicar that we knew for years led the lessons. Everyone thought he was lovely, generous and genuine. I thought he was quiet cool at the lessons and often arrived early so it was just him and me chatting.

Few months into confirmation he just disappeared from the parish. No warning, no explanation. Turns out he was a pedophile and had also been abusing children. Everyone was shocked. No one could ever see it.

    I assume it’s this bike?

Frame: HPA Ultralight, Advanced Hydroform, Triple Butted, ETC 4-Link, ISCG mount, AXH

Rear Shock: Manitou Radium Pro DC RL, 216x64mm, Rebound, Lockout

Fork: Rock Shox Pike RC Solo Air 27.5, 15QR Maxle, tapered, 160mm

    Headset: FSA Orbit 1.5E ZS, top zero-stack 1 1/8 (OD 44mm), bottom zero-stack 1 1/2 (OD 56mm)

    Stem: Race Face Chester 31.8mm

    Speed: 20

Front Mech: Shimano Deore FD-M616-D, direct mount, Down Swing

Rear Mech: Shimano XT, RD-M781-GSL, Shadow, medium cage

    Shifters: Shimano Deore SL-M610-I Rapidfire-Plus

    Chainset: Shimano Deore, FC-M615, 24/38T, 175mm

Front Brake: Formula C1 hydr. Disc 203

Rear Brake: Formula C1 hydr. Disc 180

    Rims: CUBE EX 23.7, 584x23C rim, 32H

Front Hub: CUBE EX 23.7, 100x15mm

Rear Hub: CUBE EX 23.7, 142x12mm

Tyres: Schwalbe Hans Dampf 2.35 Front Schwalbe Hans Dampf 2.35 Rear

    Seatpost: CUBE Performance 31.6*400mm

I’d look at changing wheels (maybe to Arch Ex on ProII) and run tubeless, going 1×10 and changing the deore cassette for XT/SLX. You could make all those changes for £350 ish and knock off at least 1.5 kg.

Get a Nikon D3100. It’s a fantastic camera and can film in HD. It’s a fairly small size for a DSLR and light weight.
I picked up mine as new for £120.

My 4 year old XTs are looking a bit battered and there’s some heel rub but I guess that would be expected for a year round bike that sees lots of use.

Seems like a few people have actually worn through their crank arms though 8O
