What happens to them if you drop it down the trail and smash up the computer on the bar? Does it have a limp home mode?

When I was at Swinley recently, I chatted to a few e-bikers just a long from the bottom of baby maker. Nice chaps and great to see them out riding. They all had a reason for not riding a conventional bike; age & injury.

They headed off and I had a chat/drink/snack, and as we started to follow them there was a horrible mechanical crack and a ‘ting’. One of the e-bikes had sheared all 4 chainring bolts! They were stuck out at the furthest point from the trailhead. As I said, all had injuries or where rather old. I offered to help push or drag the bike, but the insisted they’d be fine.

Makes me worry about these vulnerable people stuck out in the middle of no where. Not speaking about Swinley, but say 15 miles into the wilderness of Wales with no mobile signal, old age or injury, 20+kg dead weight, SPD shoes and adverse weather.. They can get themselves much further into the wilderness than they could if they rode a conventional bike, without a fail safe to return.

Coastal Crew riders are amazing- they could ride like that on a Brompton.
I don’t think riders that can ‘Shred the Gnar’ like that need an e-bike. To ride like that you need a fair amount of fitness, on par with what’s required to get back to the top of the trail.

Beyond humanitarian aid, we can’t do anything.
The forces at play are local, regional and global politics.
It’s a mess, a long with many other places in the world right now.
I do my bit by volunteering to pack donated kids clothes for refugees.
I’d love to do a bit more in giving direct aid to people in Syria too, but I’m yet to be convinced that it would actually reach them. Again, bigger scale politics probably prevents much of it being effective.

Submitted.

My 2 issues tend to be;
1. Dog Walkers- dogs off leads, chasing me or not having any awareness of me being nearby.
2. Fisherman- long rods and kit completely blocking the footpath, then getting in a hump when you want to get past.

TheGO- True, but it is Christmas time and schools break for Christmas shortly.
Personally I’ve never been asked to get off that train. I’ve taken the Oxford to Reading train, and vice versa, many times at all sorts of times.

You nailed it- the fast train are reservation only, and the slow local service train has no dedicated spaces, but you can sit with the bike by the doors.

Neither service is guaranteed though, and the conductor can ask you to get off or wait for the next one if it’s too busy on the slow train.

Time to get a Brompton?

Take it/yourself for a bike fit? They might be able to help you- not only with this bike but cycling in general.
Otherwise- talk to Andy. He might be able to help you with some custom Geometry. I know it’s certainly possible on his Ti bikes.

I went from T129 to T130, and couldn’t be happier.
The T129 was a great bike and felt perfect, but I fancied a change and more travel. I tested various bikes but as soon as I rode the T130, I knew it was perfect. It’s the same familiar feeling of the T129, but more travel, more nimble and more fun. I’ve not noticed any considerable speed loss on the XC rides, but it’s so much more confident descending, and rough climbs are also easier to attack.

The better half has a new Polo 1.2 TSI- despite only being 5spd, it can average a good 58mpg on the motorway, or 53mpg on our average commute (mix of A-roads & b-roads).

Cokie, you might want to mention to them that their website seems to indicate they have no products at all as I couldn’t find a single product on the site. Obviously I didn’t check everything but probably worth checking out.

I know, it’s a shame! That same issues applies to many great LBSs. I suppose they either don’t think it’s cost effective, or aren’t aware of what’s possible.

I know a few LBS owners on here whos site could benefit from an overhaul. Even if it’s a simple webpage of all brands stocked, and that they hold accounts with, it would be an improvement.

One of my LBSs has all of those in stock, except for the tyres because they stock better ones 😆 . They also have great staff and cracking cake.

This is Banjo Cycles, Newbury, btw.

I like the concept and could see it being a really useful resource, so well done!

My basic feedback;
Design: lots of wasted space in the head and footer, UI & UE is lacking (e.g.- The tables are difficult to navigate as there aren’t dividing lines and the background colour is also white).

Optimization: Looks really good actually, I like the fixed ID column

Functionality: Basic- would be nice to have additional comparison options, such as a ‘difference’ column that gives the +- comparison. Look up and sorting functions is pretty key (discipline, wheel size, sex, etc). I’d add some more parameters. Death by scrolling is not ideal.

I know all of the above will come with time and I don’t mean to be overly critical. I’d be happy to get involved in this project if you need a hand. I’m a BSA with some free time- cokie.stw(at)gmail.com

Edit: I see where your design and some features comes from, hayhub.com. Looks like you’ve used the same template.

I commute past there daily. Lovely part of the world, but you’re right. I can’t every seeing that whole river bank strip from Goring to Pangbourne ever getting planning permission. The A329 is a nasty road too with the solid double white lines along that area. Wonderful piece of land though and great location.

Now, go for that well deserved ride and coffee & cake stop (or pub).

What a horrible experience! Well done for talking about this OP.
It sounds like you’re taking the right steps already. Just make sure you keep talking about it.

Quicklinks used to come apart manually pretty easily but IME the latest generation *need* mechanical assistance.

My experience too. These look like pretty beefy tyre leavers, so I’d say worth a shot.

Do you mean like these ? Tyre leavers & magic link pliers in one.

Yeah, full face is something I’ve been putting off. I’ve done lots of uplifts, but always got away unscathed when crashing, bar a few bruises. This one has made me reconsider. One bad fall and I could do some serious damage.

Gosh, that is a very good looking bike!
Certain Konas just look so right.

I’ve got a Kona Explosif 650b in the same finish. Lovely!

Huge amount of those items aren’t ‘second-hand and used goods’, so not sure why they’re being listed. Lost of sealed boxes of goods, including tool kits, tyre leavers, lights & mudguards. I don’t see why they’d want to shift any of this wholesale.

Sorry to see that! Takes the edge off a shiny new bike part purchase..

I found my rear Hopes don’t spin with a consistent sound. I also found that wheel can feel a little odd when spinning fresh from the box, I assume this is because of the grease in the bearings.

Hard to tell in your situation though. Have you got any friends familiar with hopes & wheels builds? If in doubt, send it back and start again.

Could always get the Marin, or similar, on 0% finance over 12 months.
So, £900 cash leaves £300 to finance. That’s £25/month over 12 months.

If I was in for a bike around £900, i’d add more and go for the Marin. Great company, the bike is spec’d well & it’s a solid and tested suspension platform, plus the geometry is nice. It reminds me of a modern Specialized Pitch, which as a fantastic bike at the time.

I use hairspray too and never had them twist.
I have found that don’t last long in summer though. The thorns just rip them to shreds and after a few months they need to be binned as I can feel the bars through the sections where bits are ripped off.

Same applies to a few offs- I’ve found that I’ve written a set off when I had a light crash on a rocky trail. It’s just tore an inch into the end.

My better half has a manual Polo and I have the auto Polo.
Very easy to jump between them. I find changing gear is just like driving a bike- you don’t really forget the sequence. It’s just perfecting the bite point.

Fair dos, I drive the car carefully anyway. The gearbox doesn’t play ball if it doesn’t like how it’s being driven.

I.e.- I dropped down to 3rd to overtake from 5th, but accidentally clicked it too many times therefore trying to put it into 2nd, car refused and left it in 3rd. Same thing when the engines cold. It won’t rev past a certain range when using paddles and will change up for you. They are pretty clever these days.

Genuinely baffled by this! You just like playing with them don’t you?

You have to sit on the brakes otherwise and you’re not using the gearbox to your benefit.

..but yes, I do like playing with the paddles 😆

I ended up with a DSG accidentally (Polo GT 1.4, 7spd auto with paddles & 150bhp).

I bought a cancelled order car. The price was fantastic, but it was auto. I almost left it but figured I’d give it a try, and I’m glad i did. My commute is a mixture of B roads and then into town for some stop start. The auto just makes the commute effortless and takes some stress away. If you want to have a slow drive, it’s very relaxing and efficient, or if you fancy some spirited driving the paddles and sport is snappy. The engines more efficient in auto and returns higher MPG than it’s manual variant. Hill starts are now none existent. I’m a complete convert.

Not sure I could have auto without paddles though, as I use the paddles a lot when engine braking on hills, roundabout & junctions. Paddle auto box is the perfect blend for me.

I’d stick with the Stoge, but make a few changes;
– Fit Stooge Moto bars- high rise and large backsweep
– Fit a 100-120mm fork with 1 1/8 steerer
– Fit some fatter tyres tubeless and run at lower pressure

2 sets of wheels for me;
– 27+ with 3.0 tyres (a set for mud and a set for dust)
– 29” XC wheels with 38c tyres or 2.0 XC tyres.

Covers all the riding I could ever want. A set for hooligan fun and longer slow rides, and a set for faster road riding, country lane exploring and bike packing.

Make sure you get a set of Moto bars too- they make a huge difference.
Have fun! It’s a hell of a bike. It takes care of all the things my FS bike doesn’t do.

I do the same thing as robertgray05.
Mainly because the last bike I had was the perfect fit, so when I fancied something new it had to be as close to it as possible, but slacker and longer travel. I had about 15 bike in excel with all the geometries and then scored each component of the geometry, as well as overall. Funnily enough I ended up with another Whyte and it fits like a glove.

I’d give it a punt and send it back if it’s no good. CRC are very good with returns and CS.
