Bah, lucky! Guess you get it tomorrow then? I’ve got nothing yet. What build are you going for?

Lots of orange bits have arrived now :)

Ah, gutted. Loved following the original thread. I’d also want full external routing, especially on a custom china frame.

On a side note, how did you get on with the build? How was the Alfine Di2 for commuting duties?

I see the frames have arrived :D !
Hoping for a Friday delivery then..

Kelvin, I like the idea of that. 29er front with sus forks and then a + tyre rear to add a bit of give. Will be interested to hear how you get on with that setup.

Lovely photos guys. Those thin CS and SS look nice!

    @kelvin
any updates on that arrival and dispatch time please :D ?

@nearabighill looks nice! Love the orange bits.

What’s the frame size and how does it ride?

@Kelvin any idea when the frames will be posted out?

Also, good choice. I was pulling my hair out deciding on what colour to pick!

Website says none boost for clearance up to 32t, but any bigger needs to be boost to clear.

‘ Chainline: 50mm (regular cranks) for up to 32t chainring, 53mm Boost chainline for up to 36t chainring’

On another note, ‘mid-June delivery’. Is that to get to customers doors by mid-June or is that the containing arriving at Cotic?

I thought this was a rant about the fact that the Wainwright dog food bags aren’t recyclable.
I’m not disapointed though, this sounds interesting!

Lovely build Metalheart. Certainly worth the effort and faf. How long and slack does that look. It just looks right ! Long gone are the days of toe overlap on 29ers.

Hopefully a two week wait to go..

Did you spray anything in the frame to protect it? Or are Cotic pre-treated?

Whilst I’m gathering bits up, anyone know what ISCG mount it is? Assuming ISCG 05, inline with their other frames.
Thinking of getting a OneUp chainguide.

I recently made one for £25. It allowed me to customize all the dimensions for my needs.
    Evenings work and really satisfying.

    Yes Metalheart! Looks awesome.

Love the colour even more. Glad I went for it. Cotic need to get some natural shots.

Orange bits and other upgrades have started arriving. It’s going to be a long wait.

    Whats your build?

Something i’m not clear on is whether they have ISCG tabs. All three colours on the site show them, but no mention of it in the description and can’t see it in MH’s photos.

I considered the P7 too, but it’s more expensive once you pick the colour want, it’s made from Reynolds 525 and the geometry is pretty conservative (also measured unsagged). Plus no frame weight. I’ll be selling my dropper to get the right size too, but it’s a good excuse to get a 150-170mm seatpost and take advantage of that low seat tube/standover height.

I’ve just snapped my alu cage that’s the same design. Happened a few times now where the weld splits.

Any real world reviews on this? Any stronger than Alu or just lighter? Not bothered by weight really.

Ordered. Dark metal and some orange hope bits.

Will run 130mm Pike to start and go from there.

Its going to be a long months wait..

@andykirk , I’ve got a HR2 2.3 in the back with about 12mm space either side, so not too bad. Zero issues in the mid this year. Not bad for a 135xqr rear end.

Whyte’s great, but I’ve always fancied a Cotic and something steel. Didn’t realise the numbers would be so close, but turns out they’re not.

Green one for me then! Will keep the Whyte in case it doesn’t work out.

    cokie

Whyte aren’t particularly clear on how their geometry is measured, but it appears you’re right and it’s measured unsagged! Why can’t they just make it clear… (Stack is straight off their site and BB height was a conversion).

If that’s really the case, then I think I’ll get one.

I’ve just compared the geometry to my current bike. It’s not as radically different as i was hoping.

I bought the Whyte to tie me over as a  cheap winter HT, but it actually turns out to be superb. I’ve been waiting for ages for this to replace it. It looks fantastic and is a step in the right direction, but I do wish they pushed some of the numbers a bit more. Currently running a 50mm stem on the Whyte, so a 35mm on the Cotic gives the same reach and SA/HA are the same. Longer stays is a negative in my book. Suppose the only way to tell is to test ride and decide if it’s £400 better than my frame. Also not a fan of the cable routing.

Both charts based on 120mm travel fork, 531mm static length, with 25% sag

Heading down the steep hill in Penryn, Cornwall as a student. It was a great little hill with features, so giving it my all and making the most of it.  Problem was there is a very steep side road with poor visibility joining the main road I was on.
As I come down the high street, a big Jaguar hearse pulls out of said junction. Doesn’t see me and carries on his route without accelerating at a snails pace. Que me slamming the brakes and panicking with a 10ft gap rapidly getting smaller, and a coffin getting closer and closer. Naturally target fixating on the coffin . I ended up missing the rear quarter by a small margin and steer onto the footpath to avoid it, still doing a fair speed.

Funny in hindsight, but rather scary at the time.

I fitted an Ascent dropper (cable type) to my Whyte 529 a while back.
It sounds like it routes the same way. It was really easy and I had the cranks and all other cables in place. It was only a 10 min job, don’t see why the Reverb should be any different.

    1. pull the top grommet out and move up out of the way attached to the brake cable

    2. Get an old gear cable and attach to the new inner using electrical tape

    3. remove the BB mech routing piece

    4. Feed cable through top hole and a couple minutes of moving back and forth until the resistant stops and you get the right place. Easier with one pursing feeding the cable and another with a light at the BB, but i did it by myself.

    5. Pull through the BB and leave a large loop to feed up through the ST

    6. Trim outer to size and remove attached gear cable

    7. Bleed

I was wondering about this, could you not space the chainring out with some 3mm spacers and longer steel chainring bolts.

I had the same question for Chris at Kingdom.
Frame numbers are based around 150mm 27.5” so I requested geo numbers based on 29” wheels and 130mm or 140mm travel. Never got back to me. I imagine it’ll trough the BB height well out… otherwise it looks great and is priced very keenly.

Any idea on the BB height of your setup DrP? How’s it compare to the Rootdown?

I put roughly 4,000 miles on my second hand Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres before I changed bikes. There was still life left in them. That was Cycle lanes (if you can call them that) and roads in flat Essex. Never had a puncture either! That’s what really impressed me.

When I transition to being vegi, I found Linda McCartney epic. The burgers (Mozzarella & traditional) are so close to the flavor and texture of meat that it made the transition super easy. I still have them now and again when I fancy a BBQ or a burger. The meatloaf and sausages are good too. In fact, as a treat her whole range is pretty good.

Quorn on the other hand is disgusting. The texture and flavor feel really artificial to me. Don’t even bother with their vegi bacon. Their sausage rolls are their only saving grace.

Other than that, I’d just focus on real vegetables. Keep them chunky to make it more satisfying to chew. Focus on flavour with lots more spices and herbs.

It’s worth considering a Riverford Food Box- the selection and variety you get is awesome. You end up with vegetables you’ve never heard of, or in sizes you’ve never seen. Not that mass produces supermarket rubbish. It’s tastier and the quality is superb.

Ignoring ethical/environmental reasons, I never over eat or feel bloated now after any of my meals. It’s all quick and simple to prepare. I save cash. Food lasts longer. It’s tastier. I’ve not felt compelled to go back to meat even once.

As you say, I think if you are adamant on getting out on it tomorrow, then you’ll need shim it using steel washers. I certainly wouldn’t ride it without shimming it.

I’m wondering whether the counter sinking of the dome washer has a purpose? That might be your catch, as you can’t replicate it with basic steel washers. I’d just pop it all together with the steel washers and then review how functional it is.

@Roverpig – Cheers! Been following your other thread with interest. They do look fantastic and seem to tick lots of boxes.. I’m getting the new Solaris for sure, so that might sway my opinion.

Yes, I’ve got a spreadsheet with about 50 bikes in it… because of my choice in bikes (boutique/low volume brands, Whyte aside), it’s nearly impossible to get a demo ride. So it needs to be a purchasing commitment based on geometry, personal experience and reviews.

Last year I bought a Whyte 529 full build, I stripped it an sold all the parts as I just wanted the frame because of it geometry. It’s the cheapest bike I’ve ever had with QR rear, and I was worried it would be rubbish once built up, and waste lots of money on top end components. Turns out it’s the best HT I’ve ever had! I’ve put thousands of miles on it all year round and it’s handled it all perfect. It was a grower though. Took me a little while to get used to the longer stays and other traits.

Now really conflicted on getting a Cotic FlareMAX… geometry looks good, but it’s got longer stays, so it is more difficult to manual? With the LS geometry, is it too stable to play around on? Will I regret spending 2x or even 3x more on this than other bikes..

I’ve made plenty of poor bike choices early on, but now seem to get on with everything I buy based on personal experience.

Assume we’re talking current gen Chameleon (29er) In which case:

    > Stanton Sherpa ticks some of the boxes

    > Cotic SolarisMax (probably current gen, not upcoming Longshot)

That would be an interesting back to back ride, especially from RP;  29” vs 650b+

Good write up and lovely build RP. Nice to see an honest review where people don’t claim to be gnarduro riders. I would absolutely love one of these in blue with pink highlights and hope purple build. Might even be a possibility if I shift the Whyte..

The SolarisMAX is being released this month and I’m really hopping that it’s a HT version of this, sharing the same/similar longshot geometry.

That looks timeless, I love it.

I also agree that you need to change the fork decals to match the paint.

It would be able to take a 27.2 post but also a wider diameter dropper if needed if I did want to use one in the future.

What ST diameter did you go for, 30.9? To that end, did you go for a ST port for a stealth dropper?

    £750 is steep. It’s only 4130.

I’d prefer to stick to a Stooge and fit some klunker style bars. I think Andy is developing some too.

    No problem at all.

As with Facian, I carry a spare tube in presta-valved 27.5 flavor for all eventualities.

I even temporarily ran one in a 29+ setup without issues.
