I have rode a 2×9 drive chain fatbike on the coast now for over 5 years,
Most of my riding is over salt water rocks and sands exposed twice a day and i ride through stuff most people would never consider to ride their bike including hub deep sea water exposure,
Loads of folk said it cannot be done and it will seize up or fall to bits etc… but perseverance, experimenting and a bit of prep and Coppergrease and you can keep a bike running in these conditions easy, Just needs a different approach to the regular bike maintenance ethics, and take a wee look at the Marine motor enviroment

Bamburgh to Dunstburgh (Castle to castle) on the coast is a fantastic all day fat bike ride, big open beaches, all easy relaxed firm sand, Beadnell harbour is lovely, some nice WW2 defences if you like that stuff, Seahouses chippy by the putting green is good, will do doing an overnighter bivi there again for sure with a few pints at Low Newton  Bivi ride

Only found out after the first fatbike gathering that the coast all round Lindesfarne is an SSSI and being in Englandshire is off limits, oops
No one around at sunrise on New Years Day though

Is this the same Brad your hailing who has publicly on facebook more than once dissed building Surly Long Haul Truckers as quote; building another piece of S*** today  Can`t believe a shop owner would let his staff talk like that online to be honest about customers bikes…

It was someone i sent their way, and i can`t imagine his feelings to read that online to be honest about a bike he saved hard and long for and had big plans for…

So good luck to Mark who is a top bloke and i have enjoyed a trail ride with :-) and his future who i hope it all works out for…

To slag off the Bike Co?, well it depends on the individual staff at the end of the day, had no probs with dealing with them, if not happy in a shop then just ask to speak to someone else…simples

White with green rims? sounds like a Salsa owner

    I have a Surly Pugsley i have ridden 5 years now, Scotland`s first fatbike…

Also a moonlander, and a Jones truss fork bitzer Knard 3″+ 29er fat bike in the process of building…

If your bored at work my mumblings can be read here; coastrider[/url]

If folk think they are slow because of their weight – well they aint…

I got sick of being stuck behind Orange Fives and the like at Glentress (Red and Black descents)when i first got my pugsley, though i did not originaly buy a fat bike for this type of riding.

Oh and i was bike fit as hell back than that helped… :-)

I too once rode a five, a Patriot, later a Prophet, etc..
I do not knock these bikes and if i rode away from the coast i would still ride a 5″ full suss around trail centres…

I ride my fat bikes on the coastline of SE Scotland, i have changed my bike collection to suit my backyard…

The new Surly Krampus 29 3″+ is really the bike most people who have no interest in coastal riding should be looking at buying who fancy one of the currant 4″ fat bikes…It is an amazing bike…

Like fat bikes though you have to ride one first before judgement…

I have a Krampus test bike from my LBS soon for a couple of weeks and plan to try and do a test which i will blog which riders of regular MTBs who are interested in fat bikes will hopefully see what this bike will be capable of…

Being a school mate of Andrew Hobson here in East Lothian in the mid 80s i bought many of his frames as he upgraded,
PK Ripper, Quadangle, Skyway Ta, Harry Leary Diamond Back, Mk 1 Haro Freestyler. The Quadangle was my last BMX, a 1984 chrome looptale.
We rode the same bikes to race and to ride at Livingstone skatepark, just swap the wire wheels for Skyway mags for livi, great times, amazing bikes, just wish i had kept a couple of them and Go Pros were available to catch it all on film… :-)

There is around 20 odd fat bikers (on fatbikes!) riding the coast here in East Lothian so if your up this way get in touch and can arrange a day on the coast with a loan of a bike :-)

Thanks for looking in on the blog and reading my poor grammer :D

I’m really liking this idea, no worrying about what trails are churned up, no need for a map, no need for inner tubes and pump. Just some money for a 99 at the end of the ride.

    :D

In Scotland yes, even through SSSI areas including Nature Reserves,as long as paths are used above the coast line.
Need to ask someone else in Englandshire and Wales for advice…
Bikes can be ridden for years on beaches without problems with a bit of prep before hand

Scarista beach on Harris would be good for a road bike race, its very firm sand and 4 miles across at low tide :-)

I will take anyone out for a days ride on a fatty and can garantee if you do not smile from riding these things then you would be as well taking up Golf…

Been commuting into work a few days a week on the pug instead of using the Dirty bike so i can get in some detour home off roading after work at sunset/lights on after dark, and have to say what a great way to unwind from the day…
