The Surly is the bench mark as the original production fatbike, some other makes are better for some types of riding, some are not, Surly Pugsley is still the most versatile frameset using 135mm so can use any hub set up, SS, gears, IGH etc, also it has options to take racks if you want, I have just bought my 3rd Pugsley frame to build a new Super Pugsley over the winter for next year :-)

Real comfy flexy frame set with geometery that lets you get away with front end slides etc, My Pugs with the offset 29+ Krampus wheels makes my Karate Monkey a bit redundent now, I have not ridden anything that has made me want to upgrade for riding trails and the coast. Weight is an over talked thing with fatbikes, Pugs frameset though is light for what it is,

It has the shortest chainstay for a 4″ fatbike (only 5mm shorter than an On One) still the best fatbike for the money i have ridden for both MTB type riding and beach/ moorland peat and areas you take them where a regular MTB would be a struggle or unrideable.
Fatbikes are not a replacement for a regular MTB, Something some folk keep banging on about…

Some white and black frames from a production run had a frame cracking issue at the seat tube to seat stays, which Surly have warranted and replaced,

29+ – thats the fatbike for regular MTB riding areas

So you selling the 907 frame and fork for a couple of hundered quid then Colin?

My mate bought all the parts for an On One Fatty build kit used on eBay. Only a Howitzer 100mm BB was new, Now rolling fat 3×9 gears (no granny for fatbikes is for dreamers and posers – take em where MTBs struggle or cannot go ) for under £700, so it can be done as cheap as a regular front suspension hardtail mtb :-)

This was the first fatbike film i found to watch on youtube back in 2007. The first film that showed a fatbike rolling over pebbles and loose surfaces (away from snow) and it sold me… :-)

And being bit biased this from Fat Forth, as it was an amazing weekend as fatbike owners from all over the UK came to the homeland of UK fatbike beachriding, but it was of course not just flat wet and hard sand, but also riding rocks, singletrack, slickrock exposed by low tide, and dune surfing…
And a hell of a good Saturday night out :-)

There is an ongoing pub argument here that they were all specially placed, but there are so many i think they just stacked then up!

Phil Wood square taper 10mm BB is available. I have one with Middleburns and its a lovely made bit of kit. It is quite pricy but you can service it with just new sealed bearings, and if you have cranks then still cheaper than a full 100mm crankset. My PW has been great value lasting so long, and has only needed 3 sets of bearings in 5 1/2 years of beach riding.
Tim at Sideways should be able to help you out :-)

I don`t own a Krampus Rick, not yet

SS but going 2×9 with bash soon, and a steel Jones Truss fork i have, These wheels are way more fun on regular trails and singletrack around here than with regular 4″ fat, just faster, lighter, and roll and roll and roll :-)
Only handicap is Knards are dry tyres, and not much good in gloop here, ok on Peat though like Cheviots etc…
Roll on the Dirt Wizard tyres to be released soon

If your bored some film…

Trails like this are fun on the 29+ set up… need gears for more speed!

And some Pugsley to KramPug waffle to read

I use the SS Nano flats for beach riding, a good pedal, mine get plenty of salt water action :-) and hold up pretty well. Replacement bearing kits are available too, but change them as soon as a bit of play as once the bearings seize the pedal body will wear and be goofed

Slim Jim plastic platform flats are half the price of the alloy platform Nano`s on eBay and use the same axle kits, just got a pair so will see how long the plastic studs last grinding off rocks etc!

I do not own a Krampus but have the 29+ wheelset ie the SURLY Rabbit Hole 29 x 50mm rims and Knard 3″ tyres, called a KramPug :-)

KramPug NB Law 016 by coastkid71, on Flickr

Can only comment on the wheels but my mate has a Krampus and its a hoot! :D
A bike that you could make full suspension bikes look very silly with at Trail Centres..
The Knards are indeed useless in mud, being a dry tyre, but not to worry as the SURLY Dirt Wizard 29 x 3″ get released in Autumn
And look the biz.

Having ridden over 10,000 miles now on Fatbikes in nearly 6 years i have watched a lot of increased interest here in the UK on them.
However here in the UK there has not been as much interest in the 29+ of the Krampus as fatbikes, and there should be more,

Some things i have found with Fatbikes riding them everywhere are;
They are not replacements for MTB`s, but something differant,
They have uncontrolable rebound from the 4″ (worse with 5″) tyres at high speed – try riding one flat out doen Caddon Bank at Innerliethen.
They weigh more yet it is not really noticable until riding long climbs..

The 29+ wheels as the Krampus has started is a differnt sort of fatbike, i still term 29+ as a fatbike as you can run the tyre pressures at half of a regular 29er, 15psi instead of 30 psi.

My first Karate Monkey had Kris Holm 47mm rims with 2.55 WTB tyres, it was more comfortable and got more grip out the tyres climbing. nearly a half way house, it was close to what i was wanting.
The Knards though are faster rolling with less rebound than a regular 4″ fatbike, no matter what weigh a fatbike is, or its type of tyres. Also there is no weird squirmy steering with the 29+, it just rides like a 29er but more comfortable and more grip.

3″ is indeed half way between a 29er and a Fatbike (thats obvious!)
And way more fun and faster and more comfortable than both fatbike and 29ers. both of course are better at other things, only you can decide if it would be ideal for where you live and what you like to ride, i know i would have one in the gang, but the ability to offset the Rabbit Holes means i can have 2 in 1 bikes with the Pugsley

Hope this helps :-)

Thats my rig

cut off and welded wider to except a 4″ kite buggy wheel that has 20mm internal bearings, i just added Hope Pro 2 inserts…

More hieght would not be that much advantage as a BOB fully loaded with hardwood logs is easily twice the trailers stated limit. It can take it no probs but the bikes front wheel starts to lift once you start hauling crazy weights, i hauled a Morris Minor engine 4 miles with it but nearly killed my wrists trying to keep the front end down! :-)

I built another Karate Monkey, ISON`s ex demo frameset and its fun, slacker headangle with a Works Componants headset

Wee build and launch film :-)

And ripping some local singletrack…

The gears are being nicked off the Monkey and it will go SS for winter as needed to go on another creation, after i was given a SS Krampus offset wheel set for a Pugsley from Tyler from SURLY after Forth Fat…

Two similar bikes but quite differant

KramPug NB Law 016 by coastkid71, on Flickr

This thing rocks on trails, faster rolling on the 3″ Knards and lower pressures give more grip and comfort, a noticable lot more, BB height is an inch higher than a standard Pugsley with these wheels so i can drop it ok and fit 29×2.25 mud tyres for winter (The Knards are awful in mud being a dry dust tyre)
be fitting the steel Jones fork soon too adding to the freakness  and with 2×9 gears it will make a versatile and fun machine :-)

Wee build film of the SURLY “KramPug”…

Some local trails…

Bikes that make you smile when you ride them is what it is all about, the KramPug it ticking all the right boxes this now :-)

If that film is too slow stilltortoise here is another
Come along for a ride on some local trails, all you need to do is try and keep up

I don`t ride trail centres much on my Pugsley as get sick of getting stuck behind snails crawling along on All Mountain rigs …
Too many with all the gear and no idea!

For what its worth mentioning, fatbikes have been cool to ride on regular trails with nice comfort and amazing grip, not to mention minimum impact on soft peat based trails like the Cheviots last summer during real wet conditions, how ever if you have a ride on a 29+ 3″ Knard wheel set on regular trails you won`t want to waste your time on a 4 or 5″ fatbike with the uncontrolable rebound at high speeds, and the weird steering of a 4 or 5″ fat bike, the Krampus 50mm 29er rim and 3″ Knard tyre set up is way quicker and more positive a ride. UK riders are hell bent on riding the bigger fatbikes on trails but owning all 3 sizes the 3″ is deft best on regular trails, though We need 29×3″ Nates for the winter here in the UK!, Knards are useless in mud!.
Gears are going on my SS KramPug soon so will head down to GT and Inners and shoot some film :-)

Kunstler; the John Muir Way can be followed all the way from Dunbar to North Berwick via East Linton, Can be done after riding the river tyne trail from Haddington to Dunbar ,
From North Berwick the JMW goes west along or near to the coast all the way to Musselburgh where cycle tracks lead into Edinburgh. Take an OS Map and you will see some diversions worth taking along all these routes :-)

Binning woods south of North Berwick on the JMW is good for singletrack, alog with the river tyne trail from Haddington to Dunbar.
Some nice trails from Bolton to Gifford too,

Herring road from Dunbar to Borders is also good for a serious workout on a regular MTB :-)

I have BB7 road calipers on MTB levers on a Karate Monkey, they are an amazing brake set up compared to my other 3 sets of MTB BB7 Avids.
No idea what the differance is TBH! :D.
You also get cable adjusters with the road set. I did have these road BB7s on a Fargo before with Sora drop levers. They were good on that but way better with the MTB levers.

No idea what it is thats differant but they are way more progressive than the MTB calipers :-)

I would not worry about not getting on the forum to get to the Fifth fatbike meet, it will also be on the facebook UK fatbike page and various other blogs and sites…

The forum has only been joined by a handfull of riders around here in East Lothian, and thats around 40 owners, most tried to register, heard nothing and gave up!
Being one of several global moderators i should be able to sort this, but was appointed to the job and to be honest have no idea what to do

Your not missing much to be honest, its all a bit dull, just the usual tyre threads etc… and a couple of folk on every thread thats posted…
Folk posted that beachriding is boring and since this happend i lost interest in contributing to the forum lately…

As one person still has not taken solo responsibility for the fifth fatbike gathering most folk around here i know (in East Lothian) have opted to not bother a long drive to a weekend of uncertainess, and are heading north to Aviemore (for a still to be announced date) for a highland meet, with a Saturday ride on Cairngorm and Sunday beachride at Moray…

Copper grease on the inside adjuster from new and they will keep going even here riding in salt water on the coast. Leave it dry and it will seize solid in no time, can stll be used with the inner seized, it kinda becomes like a BB5! :-)
I just aline them by eye (white paper underneath to see the gap either side of the disc)once they seize and keep using them until they rot with corrosion usually for me around 2 years, still amazing low maintenance disc brakes,

Happy to have anyones BB7 calipers that have a seized on the inner for my beach bikes… :-)

Jack Dales harbour is famous for being cut out of the Geddon Rock by compressed air using a steam engine in 1890 by the previous estate owner Andrew Laidley.

The flat hull creel boat that is moored in side during calm seas uses a system of pulleys to stop it smashing on the sides of the harbour from the swell…

It does indeed hold claim to being the smallest commercial fishing harbour in the world :D

Amazing wee place to visit… :-)
