Glad i mostly ride fatbikes which leave less of a footprint on soft sand here on the coast and sandy trails than a human footprint. Hope he can handle that.. 8O
coastkidFree MemberBuilt a 456 a few years ago. Admitidly found it a bit heavy and dead with not much flex for a steel frame but the geometery was good and it was real cheap so for value it was good :-)
coastkidFree MemberJamie
..also, is that a custom bracket your rear, Lunar?, is on?
Its just a bracket from an old rear reflector. Used to squeeze the light in between the tool bag and mudguard. The Light is a Raleigh-prob made in same factory! :-)
Nice bikes on this thread. currantly monstercrossing my Karate Monkey now too as enjoy the drop bar thing on easy green lanes and fire roads along with the commutte into the wind and the odd hill around here!
coastkidFree MemberWhat size frame is that CdF. Just wondering if I might run out of room with one of those Jandd bags on a 52cm Croix De Fer.
My CDF is a 56cm, did some bag mwasurements for you;
Lenght along top of bag top under the TT is 38cm.
Gap from rear of bag to seatpost under TT is 13cm.we need a UK JanDD dealer!, they make some cool stuff, check out the dogs saddlebags
Miketually;
Give me a buzz if you want when your passing through East Lothian on the North Sea Cycle route, happy to show you some of the John Muir Trail and hidden Gems like Seacliff beach and mini harbour under Tantallon Castle on your journey through our wee county :-)
coastkidFree MemberHalo “Tundra” 80mm rims will be out soon, dual drilled for inline or 17mm offset and £60 per rim, thats a third the Price of Surly RDs
Its getting cheaper to go fat :-) Ison – Tundra RimsI built a complete fatbike for under £500, lucky yeah to buy one of my old frames back granted and got stock wheels for a good price but all stuff was on classifieds and eBay :-)

http://coastkid.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/can-you-build-cheap-fatbike-here-is-sub.htmlcoastkidFree MemberWith over 30 fatbikes around North Berwick now-including a family with 5 bikes with 3 XS Pugsleys for the kids, no one ever looks at me anymore on my fatbikes  just not niche enough now…

Coastkid what’s that frame bag?JabDD frame bag, around £40 posted from USA. I use it for my camera and munchies :-)
coastkidFree MemberHope Pro 2 rear, got 5 now and the oldest is 6 years and just had third bearing sets abnd been on 3 wheel builds and who knows how many miles
coastkidFree MemberAll types of bike on this local ride last summer :-)
Fatbike, 29+ KramPug(me), 29er hardtail, 26″ hardtail, 26″ full suss, CX bike, all good in their own way on this ride around some local xc trails,
The Fatbike/29+ were never lagging behind despite nearly twice the weight of the cross bike :-)
All these bikes are fun to ride though, esp with good mates :wink:29+ KramPug still holds the fastest lap of the original loop around Butterdean Woods to mates Strava times
No suspension and 29+ :-)And another film of fatties on regular xc stuff
coastkidFree MemberSandy trails here near the coast, guess i`m a lucky git!.
I used to reguarly drive an hour to ride trails or Trail centres, also took most of the day to ride 2-3 hours.
Changed my bikes for where i stay-from full suss to 29er rigid and fatbikes now. Is it as much fun?, well it`s a different fun,no driving needed and i get in more saddle time these days-and so also fitter.
I spend less on these bikes too so now have more bikes!.
I also commute more now on drop bar bikes (Genesis Cdf, old 80s Peugot Triathlon with CX tyres, and a drop bar 29er) and also ride these on old railway line walks and shooting tracks this now in winter so i still get in more saddle time :-)If i did not have these doorstep riding options then i would probably just own a crossbike/tourer like my Cdf and do more road miles.
coastkidFree MemberThanks folks, 99 it looks like then :-)
Cow poo does indeed take a bit cleaning!,
Cynic Al – Aye she is! Dutch and 6ft, Long legs indeed :lol:I have owned a few bikes over the years that were UK/Euro models of bikes that differed to the US range,
Like this John Deere Green Cannondale Killer V as described in the catologue- a rebadged Delta V which was an export model for Europe :-)coastkidFree MemberI ride 3 fatbikes-29+, 4″, and 5″ tyre size, a new Genesis Cdf commuter, a fixie road bike, an 80`s steel road bike, a single speed Mtb, two 29ers, and half are clipped and in half flat pedals and i used to notice a differance as the OP mentioned but now swap bikes so often daily i hrdly notice. Some are faster, then slower in places than more regular machines :-)
coastkidFree MemberThanks folks :-)
Song is ” The shape is in a trance “, by Thurston Moore; https://myspace.com/treesoutside/music/songs
coastkidFree MemberTis for me :-)
But i ain`t normal :mrgreen:A fatbike which is also 29+ capable is the way forward for UK xc trails if you like to ride a rigid bike, and if a fatbike for regular trails tickles your boat. Fat is fun-monster grip, get onto faster flowing singletrack and 29+ is faster :-)
29+ needs more than just the Knard tyre option though!coastkidFree Member“fans of triple drive trains need not purchase a ticket for the 29+ train. The combination of big tires, wide rims and short chain stays combine to make a 3x setup virtually impossible without serious compromises.”
Err not exactly correct if your running the wheels in a compatable 29+ fatbike frame with a 100mm BB like the old Pugsley :-)
Don`t mean to diss this bike but the chainstay tyre clearance looks a tad narrow for UK slop :-)
coastkidFree MemberAs above by HH; Conti 26″ DH 2.5-2.5″
Go for the above if your rock riding-i get rubbing on tubes riding rocks which result in little rubber balls being formed as the tube rubs on the tyre at low pressures-real weird!.
In the past i blew out thin light weight tubes riding rocks on the coast. If your a light rider/riding trails etc then the light weight tubes will be fine :-)21″ x 3″ front motorcycle Michelin Desert Tubes are in my big Moonlander!, the most indestructible tubes yet!
coastkidFree MemberNot brutal but xc easy is the Kyntyre Way,
http://coastkid.blogspot.co.uk/2010/07/biking-kintyre-way.html
Maybe you have to adjust bike line up to suit the local terrain? :-)
coastkidFree MemberEast Lothian has miles of good draining loam soil/sandy singletrack trails that makes for year round rideable stuff, just need to know where to look  and only 25 mins drive/train from Edinburgh.
Used to do rides from Longniddry and Drem Stations, and keep getting asked to do them again.
Riding fatbikes mostly on the coast these days but if enough interest, i get the time, and arse in gear to do them again i will post up on here :-)Sort of stuff we ride :-)
Loads of singletrack…
Fatbikes are welcome big time too!

2nd Feb; 29er & 29+, Messing around in the Garage 018 by coastkid71, on FlickrcoastkidFree MemberIf you can get up to North Berwick in East Lothian (25 mins on the train from Edinburgh) in April there will be at least 60+ fat bikes at FORTH FAT on the weekend of April 5th – 7th, probably every model of fatbike made that is available to buy here in the UK there so you could come along to North Berwick late Saturday affy and have a go of a few :-
Don`t get too conserned about the weight thing with them, if you do then just go 29+ for the speed. All new fatbikes now mostly have single wall drilled rims which make the biggest differance to riding feel to the weight. They are all good, but i am a bit biased to fatbikes :D
If i bought another i would be waiting for the 2nd generation of Genesis Caribou`s as it will also be 29+ compatable :-)
coastkidFree MemberI you have not been before then deft ride Spooky Woods!
The Red is more fun on a hardtail i think :-)Pie Run and Magic Mushroom are ace too!
coastkidFree MemberGot the 29+ Surly wheels sitting, whens the kickstarter er kickstarting! :-)
coastkidFree MemberYou can buy an old Pugsley frame from £140 upwards and fit one. Don`t need anything special, long as it is 135mm.
MTBR Fatbike Forum is full of threads of Rohloff fatbikes. There was Wildfire fatbikes with them even before the Pugsley :-)Will defo buy a Rohloff if they ever make them saltwater sealed and proven for a marine enviroment, as the Alfine IGH deft is not! :-)
coastkidFree MemberBirdsong here too!, Robin and a Blackbird going for it!
Light at the end of the tunnel :-)coastkidFree MemberIt was too cold for an ice cream after as is the usual after a day at the seaside :-)
coastkidFree MemberKnards on Rabbit Holes fly on tarmac!, agree crap in mud!
front 29+ on a 29er rear would be fine, half fat makes no sense at all- I have a mates Jones SS with fat front sitting here, did nothing for me compared to 29+ each end-until it rained! :-) full fat on Nates now for slop trails!
coastkidFree MemberI never say the big dip until it was too late Saggsey!
Mowgli is my girlfriends dog. 3 years old and last summer was running for 40KM endurance horse rides 8O so guess easy for him to keep ahead of a 40 something old git on a fatbike :-)
coastkidFree MemberFilled in the survey
Cannot say too much, but being a Head Greenkeeper the word on the street-via Reps is there is talks in progress and plans for a MTB trail centre on the top side of the now closed Lothianburn Golf course
The lower 9 holes of the course are now being maintained by the neighbouring Swanston Golf Club. Prob with the plan to expand their training facilities. How cool would some proper trail centre stuff near Edinburgh be? :-)
beat the awfull drive down to the Tweed Vally!coastkidFree Member29+ is maybe a better option than 4″ fat for a singlespeed. I thought this set up with the lower pressures and more grip was way better than my 29er SS bike on natural xc trails. But while great i still went to gears on the 29+ bike after 6 months as makes it more versatile :-)
With a 4″ fatbike you may as well make the most of the bikes ground covering capabilities and massive grip away from where a regular MTB is so hard work it makes it no fun. fatbikes are loads of fun!

KramPug NB Law 007 by coastkid71, on FlickrcoastkidFree MemberKarate Monkey-until you ride a 29+ :-) lack of choice on 29+ tyres though, just Knard 3″ this now which rules out winter slop! :-)
coastkidFree MemberI was going to suggest the MG42… Hitlers Buzz saw…
But it is still not fast enough despite how slow they move…
EIN SWEI DIE!
coastkidFree MemberOk in an open fire though!, 9 years and counting :-)
Some stoves don`t recommend joiner wood etc too i was reading.
My other half burns dried horse poo on her log burner stove! More free heat! :-)coastkidFree MemberLoads of legal issues indeed with lifting from most woodlands.
Perfectly legal to lift wood off the beaches here washed into John Muir Bay in East Lothian from the river Tyne estuary (not the Geordie Tyne!) after heavy rain. The stuff is not too salty, and often good hardwood. I heat my house for free-just a bit cycling, sawing and splitting. Whats not good about free and legal heating :-)
I sometimes also trailer rubbish off the beach once done lifting logs; road cones, broken creels etc, do my bit to keep the coast clean
