Bought a 1980's raleigh roadie to practice my maintenance skills on

If you try to replace the BB, the Raleigh used to have a different thread. (But I'm thinking 1950s)

You can fix it by running the thread tool through it. Later bikes use the BSA thread. the old longtime running bike shops can also sell you a square taper conversion that fits these old threads allowing any square taper crankset to be fitted to what was a cotterpin set up…i have one in a 1960s bike but its not been out so i dont know what make it is!

go on ebay, search vintage bike parts/spanners and buy a bone spanner and flat raleigh spanner, there usually couple of quid each,i got a box full of old bicycle spanners at a jumble sale for £2!, ideal for all the old bikes :o
look through here for a pic of the type of spanners you need

ro, i was on said group ride today…i met some real nice guys, and once again some real nice guys i have met before…we met no ramblers out on the hills,we met alot of day trippers near pitlochry who all stood aside on trails for us and were all very polite and friendly…we also had some navigation help from an estate employee who enjoyed seeing us all (a large group of 9 by your statement) enjoying the scenery he lives in everyday…i didnt see any day glow clothing and anodised bling either…
i often ride beaches on my own…my local trails on my own…and group rides,i commute to work most days and the only cyclists i know who have hostility are mostly cyclists with attitudes….
so what is the point your trying to make exactly?
i find folk like you hilarious…usually you end up on village gala committtes…or captains of golf clubs
you`ve failed in life elsewhere somewhere mate and you need to get a grip…
oh buy the way for the record all the guys there today live and work here in our country, pay our taxes, and exercise our rights as free voting residents to enjoy our countryside…so when your living abroad what gives you the right to let your belly rumble?

ro must being doing his nut with all the colours, the GPS's and the sheer size of the group.

It's a wonder Vietnam isn't now a crater in the earth!

Nice day out chaps. All weathers in one day.

indeed :o we got waves from everyone despite our dull clothes and bikes and even an employee of the landowner helped us out and made our large group of only 9 feel very welcome…also sure that red squirral i saw gave me the peace sign so all is well in the world :P

train to north berwick then ride up to the law carpark (cant miss north berwick law!) and follow the john muir way to east linton then ride west along the river tyne to hailes castle (signed), then a 3 mile minor road to haddington then if you have an OS map find the trails west of haddi via butterdean wood to pencaitland-or 5 miles on road then west of pencaitland join the old railwayline trail down to whitecraigs and into town…

few years back my mate got a cannondale jekyll frame when he had a 5 year old raven frame crack (as many did!)as they were then redundent so scored a better frame…maybe the replacement is an upgrade from an ongoing fault?,or maybe it depends on availability?

that super v. i love em but isnt it WAAAY steep without the lower headset extender cup?

mine was unrideable with regular forks without it.

this old frame is so fun to ride…
the Vs very always quick steering in original spec but its ok to ride with the 140 pikeys…gets the job done!

also have a rarer import john deere green killer v-now a commuter it did have an 07 build with a rear bolt on disc adaptor…

there is a another 2 campsites at torridon…2-300m past the torridon hotel at annet is a farmers field across from the red phonebox..free to camp on the shoreline (shore breeze-usually midge free) but note no facilitys but you can have a fire on the shoreline :o and there is a secluded burn for the call of nature… there is a donation box so put a couple of quid in if you stop over…
also a nice site along the road west from torridon campsite near invergalligin…very basic but this view in the morning!…

and just along at the road end is the excellent trail from lower Diabaig to Redpoint beach- a nice slow speed techy trail above the coast worth riding too as an out and back with a break on the beach…

if you can afford it the HD go-pro is good…also check out tachyon 2010 xc cameras and there new mini cam…unlike the go pro you can fix these to your lid with 3M snap velcro and they are alot less likely to hit branches etc…
i have 2 tachyon 2010 xc cams i won and thay have been faultless…also thay take up to 32g cards (go-pro-2g) thats 8 hours film or about 2 weeks time lapse!
heres a film i did with the tachyon, there are reviews on youtube you should look at,
pie run onto magic mushroom, glentress…

"Copper grease won't last 2 years"

id argue that.. as someone who rides on beaches and through a hell of alot of salt water often ive not had anything sieze coated in coppergrease in 2 1/2 years on a bike thats now done 2000 miles…
and that is everything from gear and cable disc brake inner cables to headset cups,BB cups (phil wood) and every threaded nut and bolt…
next time your down at a harbour have a look at the cranes on fishing boats and see whats oozing out the grease points…yep copper grease :o
TOP TIP; get some graphite grease for sealed wheel bearings… wurth sell it here in the UK (motor trade suppliers),it was originaly designed for alaskan mining machinery which as you can imagine has quite a tough time…the idea is if it does wash out the graphite helps prevent the dry bearing heating and seizing..not replaced any bearings since i started repacking them when new with this stuff 2 years ago…

though i do think that the cheaper brands of coppergrease like coma that you see in halfords etc is bound to be lower quality- just like cheapo car oil…

even more comfy with those big tyres front and rear :o
    and there designed for this…

    and this…

and lots of fun and silly grins….
cant afford a fork for this this now (more than the frameset FFS!)…but dont need suspension on the easy trails around here…

can have lots of fun without suspension…

    local trails…

    snow…

    the beach…

Get a pair of domestic rubber gloves.
Cut across each glove, just above the thumb.
Pull on over your socks so that the tightest section is against your leg, thereby creating a seal.
Put the slacker section over the top of your sock.

just buy these scree gators …cheap and brilliant 8)

always a good ride with a hip flask with slow gin or damsin vodka

    b) I can't think of any advantage over a normal bike and a trailer

the surly big dummy can carry 400lbs wieght..,cant carry anywhere near that with a trailer…you do need the centrestand to load them up though…
folk move house with these things in USA and holland!
the kona looks real nice…wide 29er mudgaurds too!
