Love mine, a 30 lbs fatbike 3×9, Surly KramPug, use it on hardpack sand as well as trails,
The flexy Pugsley frame gives a great all day ride, the tyres at 18 psi or lower at 14 psi smooth out the trails nicely, ace for a rigid bike, my Karate Monkey feels quite harsh by comparison, and that is a comfy ride!,
29+ is i think what most folk currantly riding trails on 4″ fatbikes would prob be better riding as they ride lighter as are faster, roll more, and are more flickable on tight trails with less rolling mass than 4″ full fat,
roll on more future tyre options :-)And roll on the warmer evenings! love riding this bike. with two wheel/tyre size options it`s my favourite bike :-)
I don`t do Strava, but told this loop of the original Butterdean woods trail here in East Lothian is the fastest, fully rigid too!
coastkidFree MemberBought a blue 13 Genesis Cdf for £699 in the New Year sales and love it

coastkidFree MemberSpecialized 26 x 3″ tubes will same you a good bit too over fat tubes :-)
coastkidFree MemberDIY (Drill it yourself) is proving very popular on wheel builds and none have folded and one has died yet from DIY wheels collapsing as some of us fat old gits thought would happen :D :-)
coastkidFree MemberHope to see some of you fellow fat freaks this weekend at Forth Fat 14
Of course it will be dull and boring, loads of crowds for getting attention, and you could easily ride were were going on a CX bike, and no Saturday night drinking  :-)
coastkidFree MemberMy Cdf is a 56cm, i am 5ft 11″ with 32″ inside leg, fits perfect,
Got a free Pearson Fixie from my big bro but it is a 54″ and deft too small for me :(coastkidFree Member15 psi on my Surly KramPugs Rabbit hole/3″ Knards, depends on your weight what suits you, i`m a tad under 14 stone :-)
coastkidFree Member5 years ago i was still riding my full suss Heckler at Glentress etc but not much as riding my first Katate Monkey rigid 29er on coastal trails here in East Lothian.
Was also riding my Surly Pugsley fatbike alone around the coast and trails here in East Lothian alone and looked at like a freak by other (usualy road) riders  :-)
Now there is loads of folk riding fatbikes around the coast and trails here in East Lothian and are also looked at like freaks by other (usualy road) riders  :-)
Est 60 -80 freaks turning up at Forth Fat in 2 weeks, so guess some things have changed for some in the tyre width department :-)Sold all bikes with suspension now as no need for our singletrack trails around here and never go to trail centres anymore. I bought/built some drop bar off roadable bikes and enjoying them as suited to our trails and green lanes and hill tracks i can ride to from home.
Still cycle nearly every day to work and often detour off road on the way home.Film quality of my compact cameras have improved a bit, spelling is still as bad on the blog :-)

last month same trail, different Monkey, different set up – newer compact camera

coastkidFree MemberI own 29″ & 29+, also a 700x cx bike along with 3 fatbikes these days for my local xc trails and coast riding and not riding any front suspension bikes now. However if i was to by a bike for trail centre riding like my nearest at Glentress and Inners i would not hesitate to buy a 26″ bike with a suss fork. Why?, speed on tight trails and jumping-I will grab my coat now and leave before those who have their heads buried in the magazines and fatbike owners who believe their fatbikes are better at trail centres (which they are not) object!
coastkidFree MemberBuild an old Klunk for a lot less money, i have a Schwinn Cruiser rescued from a skip.

Schwinn cruiser by coastkid71, on FlickrI added some old wheels off a Marin after i respoked a £15 coaster hub, £5 retro BMX stem and £15 vintage MX bars :-)
Seriously sketchy to ride with just a coaster but hilarious too!, It redefines the word fear on a bicycle!

Raleigh Bomber £100 Buy it Now or make offercoastkidFree MemberI just built an early Pro 2- new free hub body on a steel free hub,
The Hope video is good, about £20 ish for the tools to do it,Remember and refit the 2mm washer between the free hub and drive side hub bearing or you get a drag when free wheeling :-)
Some pics and waffle on myblog of the hub i did Here
Will need to scrole down about half way :-)coastkidFree MemberForgot to post a link to Glenn`s blog where you can read about that rather cool leg of his, it has an air shock :-)
coastkidFree MemberHip Flask cage/flask and a nice Malt if you can make FORTH FAT in April :-)
coastkidFree MemberI had the funeral of my father last Friday, this weather has been a lift after the last week-and as my dad would want i have been out making the most of it :-)
Life goes on and Life is Good :-) gotta make the most of it! :-)coastkidFree MemberFatbikes are old hat… my Pug is 7 years old this November  :-)
coastkidFree MemberItalspark still has those breeks! :-)
chin wagging with Eric from Surly here last year…

FORTH FAT Gathering 132 by coastkid71, on FlickrI have a new unused Bell in the box somewhere my Dad bought from Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative when he bought a bike ther around the mid 80s :-)
coastkidFree MemberI bought a 13 Genesis Cdf which is Sora 2×9 at Xmas, cheap and chearfull at half the price new compared to the big brother Croix de Fer,
It is ace! :-)Also ride a drop bar 29er Surly Karate Monkey, same idea but more HD, both these bikes are fun on/off road to/from work,
Along with them i also use a 29 year old Peugot Triathlon with cross tyres squeezed in, zero value means no worries to leave locked up outside shops etc.. no discs but cheap transport…
I like the drop bars on these bikes for into the wind on the road, and all have been strong enough for rough roads and easy trails,
A regular hardtail MTB with smooth-ish tyres is an ideal option too :-)
coastkidFree MemberNother question coastkid : )
i was considering them twinrails 29er tyres.
how are they in dry-ish clog-up-tyres type mud?
they look like they’ll just fill upscuse the hi-jack!
There ok on minor gloop, better than they look,
Not the lightest tyres but lasted well, over 2 years old now! :-)folks go on about weights of bikes!, get real! and just go ride!, my drop bar karate Monkey weighs 17kg with racks and tools (and a lot of Stans juice in tubes), as proved with fatbikes weight does not hinder fun of riding bikes in the right conditions,
My Fargo was an ace bike that i wish i had maybe kept and tried a lighter wheelset on, here is a wee film i did of the bike, i hope Cynic Al is having fun still on the frameset :-)coastkidFree MemberPosted 10 years agocoastkidFree MemberNowt wrong with that, all you need indeed for most regular trails, and can do other roles too as most Fargo owners will vouch,
I too had a Fargo, found it a bit harsh a ride unladen- though to be fair it was probably the ridged Halo rims i used, but a lovely finish frame set.Funny the whole build has ended up on another Karate Monkey- a drop bar 29er commuter/roughstuff/shopping/pub bike etc idea- but defo a bit more of a springy ride. Bell Lap drops for the purists :-)
A Surly Fargo

On-One
Superstar Nano’sStw hates:
On-One
Superstar everything elseAh Superstar!, despite the hate their Sintered pads are the only ones that last in salt water conditions cycling on the coast…
As do Avid BB7s,
Coppergrease has also been hated by STW`ers, but works in the right conditions.
but that don`t count as most STW readers hate fatbikes :-)
Better add them to the list, i mean only been out 9 years…gotta be a fad… :-)Cannot comment on Schwalbe tyres as not available in 4″ and 5″, so behind the times… :-)
coastkidFree MemberWith referance to the Dutch cycling comments, my other half is Dutch and she told me of the deaths on roads from the increase in cars, and then the 1970s oil crisis is how they got there cycling infrastructure that they have today, and to them bikes are just cheap transport, low cost, disposable items, far different to what bikes are marketed here in the UK,
Re the road riders who need proper roads, if we all keep mowing down groups of Roadies in our cars who ride 3-5 abreast on our counties roads with no road craft and militant attitudes to the cars they hold up whilst we are driving then maybe we will get the same investment here in the UK
Only joking :-)
There is indeed as the OP says not many Cycle routes i know of that i would ride a road bike on, plenty of great routes for my CX bike and 29er, i prefer the sand of the coast away from everyone to be honest :lol:Anyways here is a nice film about how the Dutch got their cyclepaths :-)
coastkidFree MemberHorse endurance events often use public Rights of Way here in Scotland, Notices go up before hand and we watch out for them over the weekend, we just pull in and say hello and the riders say thanks back :-)
We have a great system here indeed :-)
coastkidFree MemberKeela Scuffer,around £60 – £70 but..
On 3rd pair- never out lasted the first two 36″ waist pairs- standard and long leg, lost that much weight i went down a size to 34″
Gave the two 36″ pairs to friends and they are still going!
34″ long leg option are a year old now, shower proof if you squirt them down with a water repellant, i wear em for the commute, shop run, pub , beach riding etc…
Way better quality stitching than Endura.
Keela make the Scottish Mountain rescue kit along with a lot of military stuff. that speaks for itself.
coastkidFree MemberIf you don`t want fat all the time just fit 29er rims and tyres :-)
Rabbit Hole 29x 50mm rims and 29x 2.55 tyres…

Are fat bikes not MTBs like?No they are ATBs  better bikes to specificly ride up and down mountains :-)
coastkidFree MemberLycra on a fatbike! thats just wrong!, he looks far to skinny to ride one  no beer gut or beard either! far too normal looking chap :-)
no hip flask and holder too, should be ashamed racing one sober… :lol:Could never buy another bike from Specialized after what they did to Eric Parson`s wee company Epic Designs name for his Bike Packing kit,big boy bully tactics! boo on them!
