They are indeed very slimming, allowing you to enjoy more cider :-)

For folk wanting a fat bike here in the UK but not wanting to ride real soft sand on the coast this new bike will be ideal, road work, climbing, faster trail speed and overall weight will be a lot better for xc riding than a full fat, yet should give great comfort and plenty grip, Be a great bike for riding the Cheviot Hills and the like :-)

Butterdean Woods on one of these Gaz… :-)

I only need the rims and tyres as their double drilled so can fit the pugsley offset built, giving a ridged 29er with a nice slack head angle

Possibly the first one built with a pic posted online

Mukluk 3 and the black pug are about the same price.
Both bikes by have good/bad points, choice seems to come down to sizing/looks :-)
Both have 80mm rims which are a good size with the 3.7″ tyres (65mm “Large Marge” rims on original standard pug).

Salsa is deft better spec for riding out the crate with sealed hubs for beachriding, All Surly complete fatbikes come with Shimano XT or LX rear hub, which is the last hub i want on a bike to go where these things go, swapped out to a Pro 2 is a common mod…

I like the Surly frames, but the salsa has some nicer finishing kit like bars, stem, Salsa skewers, seat clamp.
Surly has Thumbies and their Mr Whirly cranks
But HH`s Mukluk is a looker and so far has been reliable dispite it doing a submarine impersonation at John Muir Bay

Come down to East Lothian if your near Edinburgh and have a go on some, Most models are often out on the coast here Saturdays :-)

The Moonlander is still the only off the shelf bike which takes 100mm rims and 4.7″ BFLs and loads of clearance – but it is a bit of a mission specific beast!

Kinda like a short travel full suss, but loads more grip on wet rock and roots as the tyres bend around stuff at low pressures and have a large contact area – but they can have a hell of a rebound off stuff at speed so not always great for higher speed riding :-)
Trails like Drumlandrig in the wet they are superb,
Using them off the beaten track they are very rewarding riding where regular bikes just do not have the grip or it is just too hard to keep moving forward if the going is really soft. Often they will amaze you what they can ride through…
Expect to see more getting used for regular trail riding with the On One fatbike on the way, also an inbetween fat/regular bike from Surly soon

Applecross is deft worth the drive, esp if also riding at Torridon :-)
The trail mentioned from Applecross – Kenmore is one of the most underated rides in the Highlands, serious buffed singletrack that undulates with climbs and descents which make it a good out and back from Applecross. Mid week you will be lucky to meet anyone on the route before August, you will really feel “out there”… take good clothing as weather can turn and cloud comes down, but trail is very defined.
There is also the short coastal trail to the beach where Monty did the first “Great Escape” BBC series :D

I did a film a few years back, half way through the film is the trail from Kenmore back to Applecross. I only had a fat bike as had just returned via Skye from Harris/Lewis west coast beaches but the film will give you an idea.

Take a nice hardtail and enjoy some classic Mountainbiking, oh and check out the Sea Kayaking day trip if it is still run beside the campsite :-)

Great blog post Druidh, though you did not mention the cost of them! :D

Their not cheap at £500 so deft need to get good use out of them.
I went for the budget option dingy for £25 off ebay

Deft not going anywhere crazy with it incase i snag and rip it but it does has two inflation hoops + base.
The pump is useless so mailed Alpacaraft for a inflation bag, cheap at $15 and uses the same standard valve, but they said postage more than bag cost and they do not do paypal  UK dealer needed!
so waiting on a Kite pump, which can go in my frame bag.

Paddle looks naff but at £25 for the kit + £15 for the floatation vest i can have a play in our Bays here at high tides and decide if shelling out the money for the real deal is worth it. Will be out for a play in next few days…
least my bikes float if i need to abandon ship
Will take the Go Pro :-)

I use a mono pod often. fit the seat post mount to the narrower end, then it is better balanced when holding and more steady. I glued on a flat stick on mount (with the sticky stuff removed) so no unscrewing to take on and off…

Set up works ok on the coast and easy trails but not a good idea riding one handed on anything rough :-)
mix it up with some chest and gorilla pod mounted ride by shots and try half slow when editing to get more film time as you ride by, and i also mount the Go Pro above the front tyre riding a ridged bike, (Larry cam :-))
just edited on Windows movie maker so nothing fancy…

Go Pro works good on a tri pod too, but time consuming to set up…

Tempted to organise a few epic (as in mass group) rides again here in East Lothian this summer from the Twp central train stations.
And if you fancy some fat biking you have landed near UK fat bike central with some amazing coastline with riding as easy or technical hard as you want :-)

Our ELMTB Facebook page is here; https://www.facebook.com/groups/170681302957856/

Often xc rides going on from Pencaitland village posted up there :-)

Any bike goes – even tiny frames with 100mm like GW rides

    Missed this thread :-)
There is indeed now much interest in fat bikes,
If there better or not than regular bikes outwith the enviroment they were designed for is up to the rider and what he gets out of riding a bike.

Off the beaten track they are a lot of fun in the enviroment they were designed for providing massive grip and often will out ride your own ability :-)

Pete, maybe not the lightest but pretty light are Hopes pro 2 rear on the back, and a Pro 2 trial/SS rear up front is a bombproof combo for an offset pug wheelset.
Waiting on a set of Marge Lites to arrive for another wheelbuild with those hubs…
All Hope spares are available and their beach/salt water tested for reliability,

2nd the blog thing druidh. I read loads of blogs as i like the cross over from peoples other interests on there blogs and where the bicycle is just there way to see and do other interests :-)

Been off here for a while due to reasons outwith cycling but on here esp is a lot of folk who have opinions of stuff they have not tried, like the look of, or see as fun. Most will probably have moved on and be doing another hobbie in a few years time…for them the Golf Clubs await where they will fit right in

Photography of the new magazine is superb. I have to admit to not buying any magazines or newspapers on a regular basis.
I would buy a magazine on a regular basis if it had a fat bike section for us freaks as that is what is of interest to myself at present in cycling :D

Also there is Law Cycles at North Berwick here on the coast that has a pugsley for daily rental, with more arriving soon.

I ride my pugsley with regular xc bikes often, if a decent size of group then keeping up aint a problem at all, but i have regular bikes for xc rides.
Fat bikes are for riding where you do not want to cause damage, or it is just far to soft and too hard work to make forward progress to ride a regular bike.
Oh and to ride proper snow every 40 years
Whats not to like?, there fun. If you don`t get them then fine,

I need to organise a coast ride – thats riding rocks, shingle, sandy single track, dunes (not just riding smooth hard sand) and only regular bikes and cx bikes can come along, then maybe folk may get it :-)

But it is the nature of singletrack forum for negative comments to people doing what they want to do
