If i recall correctly, you can replace the cups in shimano hubs, its not easy mind.

I’ve used both, well sealed cup and cone last ages. I have a set of deore hubs that still spin smoothly despite riding through flood water that was deeper than the wheels some 10 years ago. I’ve not used much in that time though.

That being said, the hope XC hubs on the commuter bikes are getting on for 7 years old, around 35,000 miles. I’ve had one of the rear bearings seize in that time. Wore out a set of pawls though, and the freehub body is looking a bit rough around the seal area.

King hubs seem to be a mix of both, you can adjust the play out of them via a cone set up, but if the bearings do fail you can replace the cartridge entirely.

Well, technically its a meduim cage, but shimano designate long cage (SGS) or short cage (GS). Long cage is 48 capacity, but i like the idea of running a short cage if i can.

Plug the joystick into charge as per normal, then press and hold the power button until the light flashes rapidly and then try turning it on.

Ive heard this UK violent crime is higher than USA before, i was a bit surprised so i looked into it. In the UK “harassment without injury” is a violent crime and reported as such. In the USA, that doesn’t register as a crime at all. Sexual harassment counts as a violent crime in the uk, yet in the states only forcible rape counts as violent crime. Even plain old harassment is classed as a violent crime in the UK, but but not in the USA.

An announcement that they were ditching standalone GPS’s and making a spartphone app, ant+ dongle and waterproof case.

Interestingly, a mobile phone is already out there that does all that the 800 does. Sony Acro S will connect with ANT+, is waterproof and runs Garmin fit, which is a mobile version of Garmin connect. Its not available in the UK via official channels, but i imported one from Hong Kong and it can pretty much replace the garmin out right.

They still require a chain device I found. Even on a tarmac commute I was throwing the chain, just by changing gear. Fitted a Paul’s device and everything is good.

Kid not injured because of the amount of clothing he’s wearing, especially the huge puffa jacket

Perhaps falconers gloves should be made of puffa jackets then, rather than double skinned leather 😀

A bird of that size would shred a double skinned leather gauntlet, unless that kid had chain mail under there, there would be an injury, even if it was from the impact. Part of the kill strike is the impact trauma the target receives, although it more pronounced in falcons than in eagles. The strike is used in the last moments of the flight, partly to drive the talons into the target and partly to stun the target.

Fake for sure, had the eagle contacted with a child its talons would have done some serious damage, the child’s clothes would have offered no protection at all. There’s very little chance that the eagle was unable to get a good grip, the kid was a sitting target.

The eagles wing beats is wrong. When it is trying to take off with the kid, it looks like it barely changes, yet its gained 10 kilos of weight. The wing beat would be stronger and faster.

Despite the failed attempt, im a bit concerned that the more gullible members of public will take as gospel and then start campaigning for culling them

    Even with a shadow+ mech?

Yep, every now and then and all i was doing was changing gear. There is a slight bit of play in the mech which allows the mech to move before the clutch engages. That was all it took to throw the chain off the ring.

The guys in Dirt seemed to think the days of chain devices might be limited now…

Then my road commute must be uber gnarly, the chain derailed fairly regularly until i put a Pauls device on it

What they should really do is change the rules so that anything that can fire a projectile with > x joules of energy requires to be licensed / ownership and use to be justified to the authorities. That way you get everything from the air rifle pellet at 800 ft/sec to the heavy slow moving stuff too

Which is how the UK law stands now. Anything over 12 ft/lb requires a license. The legal limit is set to 12 ft/lb, which equates to just under 600 ft/sec (varies a bit according to pellet).

Think it depends on the bike, the rear of mine feels very plush (tracer VP) and I find it lot more mobile than the forks which are kashima coated. I wouldn’t have a kashima shock for my bike, it doesn’t need it in my opinion.

SLX arent with out problems, i got rid of mine as they just did not provide consistent power. It would appear that the hose leaks and covered the pad with oil. So much, that the rear brake ran dry of fluid on 2 occasions. I had a similar issue with a set of deores before that.

Nice piece of kit. You’ll need to look recharging stuff, either a diving bottle or a stirrup pump. I use a stirrup pump, but it takes a bit of effort at 200 odd bar.

No experience of going caffeine free, but I have never drunk tea or coffee so does that count?

I will drink cola when I’m out and on the odd occasion at home if I get the craving. On the times I have used it in anger, driving for long periods, I’ve always had trouble sleeping afterwards.

The Airarms mentioned above is a cracker too for a springer, heavy but nicely balanced.

    The S410 isn’t a springer, dude.

I picked up a new SMK XS78 with a scope for £100 from our local shop, which for a chinese copy is very good. Its a C02 rifle and it goes it will go through CO2 canisters at a fair rate if you get in to it. They are a bit rough around the edges, but will shoot very accurately for the money.

Also worth a read is This Telegraph Article seems to have a bit more detail on the documentary’s content and is a pretty balanced piece, especially as it’s written by a motoring journalist…

Had a slight chuckle at one of the comments on the telegraph link, one of the contributors references a cyclist as “velcro clad” 😯

A manager at my first place of work would “motivate” the staff by bringing a baseball bat to meetings. Basically what he said was gospel, or else. If you had the pleasure of being called up to his office for additional motivation he would sit and punch a teddy, explaining that it would be you next.

I didn’t believe any of it at first, but the fist baseball bat meeting with him in the affectionately called war room confirmed it. I was a bit intimidated to say the least. However, when i was called up to the office fro some minor indiscretion, the punching teddy bear thing made me burst out laughing.

It would seem that the effort to maintain the speed is more, going by my heart rate. For the same heart rate, my speed is 2-3 mph lower.

    make naff all difference.

Individually, id say yes but collectively i reckon it all adds up. When i went for ride with my daughter, i noticed that she wasn’t gliding as well on her balance bike. Temperature was about 0ºC and when i checked the bike over the wheels weren’t spinning as smoothly as the grease was rock hard inside. Scaled up to my bike, the effect might be reduced but its there i think.

Counter question; ever known someone with a degree who think’s it’s held them back?

Possibly. My company wont employ anyone without a degree (although they often buy other companies and take on plenty of staff that don’t have degrees) and there is a lot of pressure to perform to a certain level. With the oil industry as it is, there seems work yourself to death ethic, which i don’t buy into. To my colleagues and managers i’m a bit odd, so i’m left to my own devices really.

Part of my commute takes in a path like that, but i don’t use it and here’s why.

I join the busy 60 mph road and turn left and after about 200 mtrs the road turns to a 30 mph residential area. In order get to the path i would have to cross 2 lanes of traffic and the grass verge (which you can’t cycle over) separating the road and the cycle path. I would then cycle 200 metres, where the path the crosses the same road to join up with cycle path on the opposite side of the road at a pinch point, this cycle path i do use, although its marked on the road not a separate path.

I get no end of abuse from motorists for doing this, presumably because all they can see is a cyclist not using the cycle lane.

The flare is okay, but the main thing that annoyed me was the batteries, particularly when the charger broke. After a years commuting the threads on the lens have started to crack. Ive since stumped up for a hope district 3, which seems to be somewhat over engineered but if it lasts then its worth it.

c&b seen lights do a rear light which is very bright for about £30

On the way back from nursery last night daughter was complaining about sore eyes.

    “What’s wrong with your eyes?”
    “They’re sore Daddy”
    “What happened?”
    “Father christmas did it”
    “What did he do?”
“He poked me in the eye”
“Did he, well he’s very naughty”
“He did it with his pink sword daddy”
    “Erm, okay…”

Just for balance, my slx were terrible. They just kept leaking to the point where after about 2 months the rear was empty of fluid. Power was woeful as most of the fluid ended up on the rotors.

Standing a in a que behind “yoof” with trousers round his knees.

“Daddy, i can see that man’s pants!!!”

Stifled giggles from myself and other people in the que.

“Daddy, that man’s got flower’s on his pants!!!”

    PMSL at that point.

Tyler Hamilton’s ‘vanishing twin defence’ has to be one of the most ridiculous lies/excuses in the history of sport surely?

I was under the impression that Tyler listed this a possible way that the blood test showed positive, i didn’t think he actually used it as a defence. As i read it, it was taken out of context by the media and mountain out of molehill followed.

Given that all those that testified were also drug cheats, I think their testimonies should be disregarded.

Been answered before, but just for you fella. 26 people testified, of which 11 are cyclists. So that leaves 15 that weren’t “drug cheats” by my reckoning.

Sony GO or Active. If you can get them the Sony Acro S or the xperia V (not yet released), neither of which are (or will be)released in the UK (officially). They are all waterproof to about 1m and dustproof. The Acro S and the V probably aren’t “tough” in the sense they have been made more rugged though. I can vouch for the Acro s waterproofing though.

My only “dabble” with strava was to see if there were any KOMs on my commute. There was one, someone managed 28 mph up a 1 in 4 hill which i thought was a bit suspect. Overall it seemed okay, but it didnt do anything more than Garmin Connect for me. Garmin connect also tracks my swimming, so i only have to look in one place for my data.

Ditto being honest with them, friend sent his light back after the cable pulled out of the head unit and he went to town with a solder iron and properly stuffed the PCB. Fixed free of charge by hope.

Just to add to this, the ashurst to lyndhurst road was never narrowed to create the cylepath, it was a footpath before that. Sadly, it’s too narrow to allow pedestrians and cyclists to use it safely. The original plan was to create a path on the other side of the fence, however the very anti-bike verderers put a stop the that sharpish.
