Don’t even talk about off road access,

The verderers and the forestry commision had a falling out about this issue. Long story short, Forestry commision wanted to extended the off road network, verderers said “no”, forestry commision said “up yours then”. Since its the forestry commision that polices the forest, the no off road rule no longer enforced by the forestry commision.

Forest local too, most of the objections to people using the forest seem to come from those that have just moved there.

They can do, i mounted mine using the Hope adaptor for my brakes (Hope obviously). It allowed me to mount the reverb lever upside down, but there’s not a lot of adjustment once the lever is position against the brake lever.

But you also have to factor in the price of the tool.

You don’t need the tool to service a King BB, just makes it quicker/easier. You can service it in the same way as you would a King headset.

Here’s a thing, my daughter has had the MMR jab, yet she still got measles, albeit only a mild form.

Id look around local shops to see what they have, its unusual for air rifles to be ordered online and delivered, which does limit your choice abit. Id also look at second hand too, its perfectly legal to post air rifles so you get lot more choice.

There is nothing wrong with SMK rifles to be fair, they are a bit rough around the edges and if you have a mind too they can be smoothed out a lot. They all shoot well though, which is just aswell as for less then £100 there isn’t much else.

Isn’t it only air rifles with under 12ft/lb in power that don’t need a license?

This any good for shooting vermin?

    http://www.surplusstore.co.uk/air-weapons/air-rifles/xs19.html

Yes, although it wont be producing anything like 12ft/lb, the SMK rifles are all under in stock form. Its also a bit pricey id say.

No experience of roads hubs, but i run king hubs on two mountain bikes. I broke a bearing due to operator error when i serviced one of them (service tool incorrectly seated) and the single speed froze at -12 due to lack of servicing (not serviced in 4 years, freehub had water inside) Clearing the water out solved this and there was no damage done to the internals, which i can’t say for any other hubs this has happened too . They are no louder than hope XC’s i use on other bikes, a lot quieter then Pro 2.

Originally, I bought Kings simply because i always wanted a pair and i think they are lovely pieces of kit, but part of the fun for me is servicing them, they are works of art inside. But as has been said, the tool ain’t cheap.

Don’t know whether they would last a life time, does anything? The single speed hub in the same design as other King hubs, and that’s still running smooth despite being ridden only in winter on the Southdowns. It just gets hosed down at the end of the ride and i haven’t replaced anything in it.

Luminous lights do cable free version, as do full beam. Helmet mounted I guess is down to deal extreme torches etc. I’ve not used any of the those mentioned above, but can vouch for the exposure stuff, its damm fine stuff.

Is there anyway I can tune my 1.0 petrol? Its actually amazing except for its little flat spots and boy its rev-tastic.

Assuming its a NA engine, not cheaply. You might get about 5-10bhp out of it reasonably easily, but you wouldn’t notice it. If there’s tubby tucked away in there, you can get more, but i doubt your car has one.

Yes its a petrol, but its run on synthetic oil and changed every 20 k miles by mini.

Diesels are very hard on engine oil, petrol engines by and large fair far better than diesels in this respect. Combustion gases from diesels lower the PH of the engine oil considerably, synthetic or not. As has been said, 12.5k is too long for service intervals, but that’s of little comfort to the OP.

I convinced that the long service intervals were introduced due to the pressures of fleet owners trying to reduce costs.

Cool, i’d offer to help out with some pool time, but i guess there’l be no shortage offers from other swimmers. I generally know when i swimming fast by feel, but i love having data to back it up.

I have a waterproof android if that’s any help?

Also I’m messing around building some swimming technology at the moment to support a project I’m working on – currently at a stage where I’m getting accurate (both sided) stroke counts and lap times, data on left/right balance and various other really interesting metrics. The current state of swimming technology is nice enough, but really very basic, with the exception of the crazy video analysis and pressure tracking stuff done on high level professionals in research, using many thousands of pounds of equipment and/or tons of manual operator time. I think things could be made a lot better for the average swimmer, without expensive technology or pool modifications.

Do tell. I was looking at the pebble watch and its hardware isn’t too dissimilar to the garmin swim and its apparently waterproof. Fairly certain you could use the acelerometers in the pebble to duplicate the garmin swim.

Don’t know if its the same for the swimovate, but the garmin gives a strokes per length of 11. Presumably that’s one arm stroke, so i’m really doing 22 strokes per 25m.

That swim smooth site is very good for reference, i modified my stroke slightly based on mr smooth and knocked 12 seconds of my 100m interval times.

Any of you lot use the garmin swim watch? Been using one since they came out and rather like it for logging my swims. Only works in the pool though.

Chris King, currently on 4 years. You need to remove the crankset to re-grease it using the tool though.

Shimano SLX seem to last ages for me, couple of years on commuter bike that does about 4000 miles a year, rain shine or snow. Square taper lasted similar time, although i have philwood on a single speed thats been going for 5 years and looks like it will last forever. Some bad pitting on the case though. I have a UN72 from around 20 years ago that is still seized in a frame, the frame bent trying to get it out.

Commuter now runs a Hope, just because im worth it.

Our Morso Squirrel was about £400. I believe thats rated at 4 or 5 Kw, but that’s conservative, by some margin i reckon. More or less warms our 4 bed house without breaking a sweat. At full chat, i doubt you could stay in the same room as it.

Might be worth checking out Parp industries, ive used their stoves in a yurt i lived in. Basic looking, but work very well.

Conditions around Winchester last night were fine, couple of places were very bad where horse’s have been through. As others have said, exposed sections will be dry, wooded sections not so although its improved alot in the last week. The lower areas will be wet i imagine, there was still some snow patches around Harting down last Wednesday, but thats probably gone now.

The rain fall and subsequent run off has cut new channels in some trials, which has exposed lots of lovely new flint, which is cutting up my tyres a treat.

I used to swear by shimano brakes, but after going through 3 pairs of SLX brakes that just kept losing power i swapped to Hope Tech evos. So far they have been excellent.

I use a new gore phantom, but i never had the old one so i don’t know how the material compares. For me, its the best jacket out there, use it all year round for commuting and proper riding in temps of -12 up to 12, raing, hail or snow. I have Endura convert, but whilst its a better waterproof, it doesn’t breath very well.

Howies long sleeve merino base layer
    Gore Phantom 2 jacket
    Padded short liner
    Altura Waterproof 3/4 shorts
    Wollie boolie socks
    Shimano MW80 boots
    Berghaus half gaiters
Pearl izumi pro softshell lite gloves

Commuting and off road. If temparatures go lowere than say -5, i ll change the base layer to a thicker merino.

So basically what its saying is that if i were to live in a house worth around £300k, i could theoretically move to a house worth 360k, without paying anymore on the mortgage?

    What could possibly go wrong…?

Cape town is ace, Joburg, what footflaps said.

Having said that, one of my mums friends is from joborg and was terrified of coming over to live in London. All she had heard about London was of killings, mugging etc via the news.

However i’ve been to cape town and joborg.

I currently have both and id say there is very little in it. Not had a good chance to use it much in anger, but initially the main advantage of the reflex is the size/weight (or lack of it). The beam appears to be wider on the reflex, but throw is a little less, although this is was performed using the high setting on the 2,6,12 mode. There is a “boost” mode which gives a burn time of around 1hr 20, which presumably is brighter still and i suspect closer to the 2200 lumen outout than the mode i had it on. Hand on heart, i doubt you would notice any difference on the trail.

As to is it worth it, your call. The speed variable setting wont do anything that a manual switch wont do, you just don’t have to think about it.

Does pushing a big gear knacker your joints? I push a big gear most of the time, i find a cadence of 70 about right for me, but then i spend 5/6 months of the year on a singlespeed.

If he is only riding once a week, then id say that’s why he cant keep up.

    Just a few:

Mother in law lived in london during the blitz when she was little. They would spend the nights in the underground and american troops would pass on though. The soldiers would often put chocolate bars in her hand as she slept.

My Nan was a showgirl who entertained the troops, if it wasn’t for a certain amorous american, my dad & i wouldn’t be here. This after my nan had leaned that my grandad was missing in action, presumed dead. He turned up in POW camp by bridge over the river Kwai. Nan had some explaining to do, but since they went on to have 4 other sons they presumably worked it out.

The Radar was developed at Bawdsey, which was accessible by a ferry. This was run by my mums side of the family, which at the time was my great granddad Charles Brinkley, who lost his hand on a shooting accident. This hand was replaced with a hook and resembled a tool used during the development. The tool became known as the Brinkley hook.

I remember talking to our center manager about my impending fatherhood and i was stated that i didn’t feel ready her, her comment was “that why you get 9 months to prepare”

Life doesn’t have to change to the extent that some would have you believe, we still enjoy foreign holidays (In 3 years if my daughters life, she been to France 3/4 times, Italy, Australia, Lanzarote and this year we are off to Italy again followed by Kenya). We still go away at the last minute, this weekend we grabbed a cheap deal on a log cabin in the forest, booked it on the Monday. The cost of having children is exaggerated somewhat, if you insist on having everything new and shiny then it costs, but the reality is babies needs are fairly basic. All our daughters clothes are second/third hand at least. She couldn’t care less.

Going out for the odd meal can be a problem, although thanks to the pre and post natal classes we have some great friends who we share babysitting duties with.

Certain things go by the wayside, i rarely watch TV these days and the garden looks like some psychedelic plastic mushroom farm with all the toys scattered about.

I found that after the second year, things settled down a lot and everything clicked. I ride more now than i did before i had my daughter, i swim a couple of times a week which i didn’t do before and i manage to go the gym three times a week. When i look back on my life before, its amazing how much time i wasted.

Then there are those little moments that make it all worth while. I was properly ill over Christmas, vomiting all night. My daughter came downstairs, placed her hand on my stomach and said “Magic hands Daddy, make tummy better” and just sat with me. There was genuine concern in her eyes. Admittedly she then did a passable impression of me being sick to anybody that would listen.

I guess most people don’t like the change babies bring, but life has to change in order to thrive i think. If all we do is maintain the status quo, life just becomes stagnant. I don’t think anyone is ever truly ready to have children, my sister did child minding for a while before having her son, yet even she wasn’t prepared for the affect it would have (both good and bad). I suspect that every expectant parent goes through a stage where they resent the impending loss of their current lifestyle, i know i did. But i talked to friends that were going or had gone through the same thing and i realized that it wasn’t me.

Only thing to add, i seem to get a lot more out of the parent/child relationship the more i put in.

I guess i’m kinda of lucky, my missus doesn’t ask for much, she just likes to travel. Provided we get to go away a few times a year and the bank accounts balance, she cares not one jot what i spend my money on. Which is why i have 16 bikes in the garage…

I was properly made up when she could tell the difference between a set of Mazzochi forks that suddenly became fox forks. I rewarded her by buying her a FSR and she rides with me more often than not.

Years ago there was a individual that trolled numerous car forums, generally upsetting all and sundry. As soon as he posted on a thread, it went ballistic. He just insulted everyone, although he did seem to know his stuff. Long and short of it, after year of winding people up pictures of started to appear on aforementioned forums. Then people started posting his IP address. Finally his home address appeared, he still carried on doing thing though. It got a bit out of hand then, people that he had upset took it personally and carried out the various threats that had been bandied around. Kinda brought on himself, one of his post claimed that he was some über soldier and if he showed his id card to police after an incident no charges would be brought against him.

If it’s a proper PCN, then it’ll be the council – you’ll need to appeal

No, it states a “Parking Charge Notice” not a “Penalty Charge Notice” and unless the new forest district council or the MET office has moved their offices to Newton Abbot, it was not issued by the county council or the police.

Company that issued it is Premier parking solutions btw.

Interesting, i’ve just got one of these myself, although the circumstances were a bit bizarre. The attendant was photographing my car as i returned and explained that i had parked without a ticket. I showed him the ticket clearly displayed in the window, to which he answered “tickets been issued now, nothing i can do”. His only advice was to appeal, although judging by some of the experiences that seems a waste of time. Despite having a ticket issued at 16:26 and a receipt for goods purchased from the shop i parked in front of for 16:31 (the PCN was issued at 16:30), i think i’ll just ignore it. Seems the mistake is to enter into a dialogue with them.

Personally I don’t think its right, we took our daughter to a party one time and there was a young lad of about 2 years old with piercings, gold chain the lot. Our daughter was drawn to them like a magpie and it was only a matter of time before she grabbed hold of them and tried to pull them out as most 2 year olds seem to do. The enivitable happened, although another child grabbed hold of the ear ring and pulled it out. Thought it a bit unfair on the lad really. My wife hasn’t got pierced ears, so it might rub of on our daughter, although I doubt it.

Waterproof shorts for me in the winter, didn’t feel to bad in -12. I still get hot and after 20 minutes or so riding i start undoing jacket zips.
