For that sort of terrain, what you need is Maxxis Advantages – 2.4 EXO

    Like THESE…

Are you sure it’s not just a new chain stretching/bedding in?

2.4 ardent will definitely foul the front mech, too big if you’re running gears on a swift ime

What size tyre do you have in the back? I found a 2.25 ardent about as big as I could run with a triple mech

Mine seems ok, reliable, nice operation but the degrees markers are out so you have to set-up each time or make your own marks at 0, 45 etc…

the hx1 rear end is the most compliant rear end I’ve ever ridden!
Innuendo aside, I think you may well be believing too much of the hype Out of interest, where does comfort/flex in a frame actually come from?

I dunno it’s just the comfiest 26er hardtail I’ve ever ridden. Same seat, same wheels, probably a different post to my other steeds… It just seems to take the stings out the knocks. But really laterally stiff when applying the power…

I had a black frame with white forks and it looked fantastic with a front white flow rim and black hope hub.

    (a) Angle the levers up a bit. I dunno when it became fashionable to have them dangling down so far underneath the bars.

    (b) Don’t tighten them up too much and they should rotate round the bar in the event of any contact with the top tube.

Agree with a, definitely NOT b

Read “dividing the great” by John Metcalfe, thoroughly good read, especially if you watch “ride the divide” first to set the scene…

2.4 Ralph is nice big and fast. 2.4 ardents are huge comfy and good in most conditions except proper mud. Beavers are excellent in mud, better tyre than the mudx as an all rounder. Hearing fantastic things about the ikons though! I think they will be my next purchase. My friend really loves the hans dampf, seems a good all rounder, hence the name I guess.

If it’s of any interest, the Wing Commander of the Red Arrows (Red 11) lives in our village and regularly comes out mountain biking with us on his very nice Anthem….

I find the latest incarnation of Chumba HX1 to be surprisingly compliant, very impressive ride quality.

I find Deore to be a bit too bendy for a singlespeed, really liking middleburns on my swift though.

I have a spare set of isis middleburns and a 32t ring which you can have under your budget if you’re interested. Email in profile if you are.
