The reason to avoid the area is because of your social responsibility to limit the spread as much as is possible.

The reported Tweet that I read from South Lakes Police was:

“Before considering travelling to #Cumbria #LakeDistrict please grab a brew, examine this map, and take a long hard look at your own conscience. We urge you to use common sense and to continue to exercise close to your own home. We need to break the cycle of infection #lockdown.”

which I read as saying very clearly, don’t bring the virus into an area that already has high infection rates, not “stay away or you will die”.

Problem is Gov guidance implies I could drive to Lakes from Somerset – it would be within new guidelines. I feel sorry for the police – how on earth can they work with this??

Heres mine, its black. Not relevant I know but I love it.

Lovely looking bike. Crikey though it’s looooooong!

My Orbea Occam does everything you want. 120 rear, 130 front, light. Good geo but not ultra-modern. It’s a 2017 bike I think. For sale, but probably already sold.

I predict a VAT hoik once we are out of lockdown.
    Buy now. …

Surely that will stop people spending, when they need the exact opposite?

The Chase is really stable. Sometimes I use with bladder, sometimes without.

    Half the weight?

    Camelback Chase bike vest

OMM range has loads of small, lightweight packs. One linked is 220g.

I might have a RS Judy Gold for sale soon. Air fork, but unsure of weight. Came on my Chisel, but planning on swapping in a carbon fork.

Ah, but I want to be able to run ss (without a tensioner). Plus I think the £150 offer has finished!

Consensus seems to be that the Carbon one really isn’t that much lighter, and at double the price for quite a bit less than a lb weight saving, it isn’t really worth it.

Cheers mboy, useful, and I think where I’m heading.

And come to think of it the stock 29er build comes with 120mm forks, most of which are 32 or 34mm.

It’s only one, unimportant opinion. But I think Sids on a Chameleon would look right daft.

Fair enough. But have you seen the new 120mm 35mm SIDs?

All secondary schools will have an extensive transition programme; ours includes taster days in the summer term, parent evenings, a week’s summer school for the most vulnerable and a staggered start in Sept with just Year 7 in on day 1. Plus visits by SENCO and HOY to primaries to meet class teachers, family interviews with their new tutor etc.

Obviously lots of this will have to change, but I’m sure schools, parents and children will all adapt.

I can imagine a more staggered intake in september, maybe starting a few days earlier with 7’s to get them settled before the rabble arrive.

Yeah we do this anyway, but it could easily be extended for an extra couple of days.

They are not going to be closed forever – there will still be a first day for them at some point.

Agreed, but likely just Yr 10 back initially, and then not every day – spread out over course of the week.

Year 6-7 transition is really important and will require significant planning. Most kids, however, are more resilient than we think.

New 120mm SIDs are 35mm stanchions. So pretty strong but new damper and light. Whole point Mk7 Chameleon is that it can be built as burly trail bike or xc bike. Stock 29er comes with 120mm fork.

I say that, I ended up deciding a Solaris was better for me but the cost/weight calculation was similar. The fact I can’t buy one makes me look at the chameleon again….

Yeah, looked at Solaris but I think I want something more agile. Plus medium seat tube on Solaris mega-short (16.5″?). Ideally I’d want seat tube from large on reach of medium. Plus of course Chameleon is easy to run ss as well.

I think carbon is about 500g lighter. It’s exactly those forks I was looking at! Alu and new 120mm 35mm SIDs, or cabin and something like a Reba…

I’d say that puts you on XL?

Have you ever tried to motivate and manage teenagers when they perceive something is not fair?

I have, I’m not sure why you thing they’d perceive starting their holidays three weeks earlier and then going back three weeks earlier as inherently unfair.

How would schools manage attendance? How would you manage the progress of the significant minority (at least) who wouldn’t attend?

Probably the same way as if you send schools back before summer and some parents or pupils decide “it’s too high risk”…

    Then what about teaching staff/support staff terms and conditions? Teachers are not averse to hard work;

Like I said some would be unhappy. Some would be pragmatic. Some will be more unhappy teaching pupils f2f in June/July. Some will be more concerned that the education is suffering, and next year will be worse…

Staff will rise to the challenge, but please don’t be derogatory towards school staff when you clearly don’t understand the whole situation.

    i haven’t been derogatory – you need to be less tetchy. Lots of people in both private and public sector are doing things which were unimaginable 8 weeks ago, and all sorts of employees facing unpleasant choices – all take two weeks holiday during lockdown (with nowhere to go) or we have to furlough 50% of the staff being one I know quite well;

Some fair points. Interestingly our school was asked to possibly prepare for working during summer break about 4 weeks ago.

The issue that concerns me most is the students that don’t attend, if we go back at a different time. Our county support for attendance was non-existent before the crisis; whatever happens need to be clearly communicated by Gov (if they are capable of that) and some system put in place of for those that refuse to attend.

Have you ridden one? I borrowed a large form their Ambleside store. Great bike, large was spot on for me (I’m 5’10”).

Here’s a radical suggestion. Why not stop teaching at the end of June (or even sooner) and go back in early August – like Scotland normally does? Obviously that would need some clear messaging around summer travel as otherwise those still expecting to fly to Majorca in August will be irate. I dare say that there would be some unhappy teachers in that situation too – but there will be unhappy teachers no matter what.

Have you ever tried to motivate and manage teenagers when they perceive something is not fair? They will still see the summer holidays as exactly that. Any that do come (if it were to happen) there could be significant motivation/behaviour issues, and lots would refuse. How would schools manage attendance? How would you manage the progress of the significant minority (at least) who wouldn’t attend?

Then what about teaching staff/support staff terms and conditions? Teachers are not averse to hard work; schools are open currently and have been staffed throughout Easter holidays for children of key workers and vulnerable students. Teachers not in school on rota are working bloody hard preparing, running and marking online lessons.

Staff will rise to the challenge, but please don’t be derogatory towards school staff when you clearly don’t understand the whole situation.

The swift has some of that stuff but not as much- website says there could be a new batch of steel frames coming.

Think new Swifts will be next year, based on when I last asked Sam. I was hoping for one as well.

I was after something like this a few months back (light steel 29er XC frame), but no luck.

Shand Bahookie? Think they are light for steel.

People are riding bikes that are far too long for them right now. 5’10.5in and a large is ridiculous.

Not according to the sizing chart on the website!

I’m 5’10” and the issue I would have with a medium is the 420mm seat tube. I have longish legs for my height and it means often seat post (rigid) are past min insertion point.

Why does the meeting need to be in teaching hours due to the roles involved? What’s special about the roles? What are they discussing? Can’t they schedule it over lunch time? Or during morning break? Or god forbid, after 3:30pm?

Again, echoing comments above, this understandably reflects a lack of understanding.

Staff are on duty, some before school (from 0750), and at break and lunch. Particularly in small secondary schools where the same number of duties need to be covered with fewer staff.

After school all staff (in our school) are in meetings on Mondays, always until 1600, but sometimes until 1700. As mentioned above a lot of pastoral staff and SLT are in meetings with parents after school or in department meetings etc. on at least 2 or 3 more days a week. Most teaching staff also run 1 or 2 sessions per week ‘after school’ for students.

Scheduling meetings, never mind a full timetable, in itself can therefore be problematic. Despite what some people think most school staff work bloody hard to provide the best they can for the young people in our care.

Looks fun! Anyone ridden one of the new Frontiers? Fancy building one as a cheap ss but wary of how stiff a cheap alu frame is going to be.

If you want to spend less by a Specialised Chisel – it’s their cheaper alu xc bike, but it has a really light frame and is really comfy. Spend the difference on some nice light wheels? Review

I’ve just gone back to a xc bike – Specialised Chisel – absolutely love it. Not slack, or long but just feels sprightly and fun to ride. The other bike that felt similar was my 29 Anthem, as above.

    Shame nobody does, really.

That is lovely, very jealous. I’ve been trying to track down a large alu frame, but none available in uk.
