I’ve read this a few times at an absolute loss as to what to say, but wanted to post whatever support it is I feel this offers. As most have said, there’s very little anyone can say to ease what you’re going through right now. But, know there’s a community right here thinking of you and your family. Some kind and empathetic folk who have been through similar offering their time and ear if you need it. If I could offer anything more I would. Like everyone else we’re all hoping that things will turn out as well as they possibly can for you all. Look after yourself and make the most of whatever support surrounds you. Wishing you all of whatever it is I possibly can.

climbingkevFree MemberHose the worst of, let dry, take indoors…….Wet wipes are your friend!
climbingkevFree MemberHelly Henson from Screwfix, £10 a pieces according to their last email.
Lots of tools, go Were, Knipex, Bahco etc.
Magma technicians bag for tools from Amazon.
Disc brake cleaner, degreaser, water displacer etc etc £1 per 600ml aerosol from the local pound type shop.
IKEA bags and Gorilla tubs for the car. Milton for water bottles. Vets tape for injuries. Prescription safety glasses (through work if you can).
climbingkevFree MemberIs that to release “frozen shoulder”? I had a SLAP repair 4 weeks ago and am pretty sore still, been weening myself of the fling the last week. I could get on the turbo after 2 weeks and have entered a Sportive mid April. I was however told I’ll never climb again….. After the op following bicep damage he discovered 😥 There’s more chance of my arse healing over than there is me not climbing again.
Good luck. Time, physio and common sense will see you right again.
climbingkevFree MemberI’m waiting out for the Fenix 3. Half price to anyone with Pru Health too 😀
climbingkevFree Member11-34 : 32t (1×9) Peak District on a heavyish bike. But I’m tight, don’t race and it can only make you fitter right?
climbingkevFree MemberGearfreak just reminded me, pay off/overpay your main resident mortgage first for tax efficiency, if you have one. Although the numbers might suggest that paying off the mortgage with the highest rate (most likely the BTL) is more beneficial than the tax savings. There’s also benefits to keeping your residential mortgage ticking over if it’s cheap and has a low balance, useful if you may need cash later on. I.e. A bank is more likely to lend against a known entity that they’ve already conducted searches on etc, saving you money and arrangement fees at the same time in most instances.
climbingkevFree MemberAnyone use an OMM Kamleika? I’m really interested in these, probably the smock.
climbingkevFree MemberHMRC Form 17 into Google.
This thread return is with a read

climbingkevFree MemberBuy to let repayment mortgage. Make overpayments equal to what your paying on the current loan. Most lenfers will let you make a 10% overpayment on the outstanding capital balance per year. Tax wise interest only make sense, but it’s marginal and in my opinion your essentially “renting to let” plus any incidental capital gains if/when you sell. Depending on what you buy it’ll probably need some work doing which you can also offset against the tax. There’s no reason it can’t be in the wife’s name for tax efficiency. If she doesn’t qualify for the mortgage there is a way of sign over the responsibility of the property and subsequent profits to her. I’ll try and find the exact terminology, you can search for the relevant form on the HMRC site.
Also use a mortgage calculator.
£100k borrowing at 5% is £591 a month repayment and £417 interest only and In 25 years you won’t own it. Look at the difference overpayments make to the term length also. If you’ve never overpayed your mortgage this will make you cry. Depending on the overpayment you make owning it within 20 years and then realising the entire rent as profit is not unrealistic. Just don’t forget the admin, costs and responsibilities that comes with being a landlord.

climbingkevFree MemberUsed the German version as per welshfarmer too. Can’t offer a comparison as, thankfully, never needed to use either.
climbingkevFree MemberUsed to use the Canadian Alpine Club. It was an all in (climb, ski, ride, kayak, off piste etc) scheme that came with the annual membership which I got to use their huts and bothys. It was a surprise benefit, dirt cheap. I kept my membership up for the insurance alone as they were the only ones who went over 5 or 6000m alt when I had some big trips planned. £40 a year IIRC.
climbingkevFree MemberMy younger cousin (about four at the time) wanted to organise a birthday party for Ray when he comes over at the weekend. His parents called mine asking if it was my dads (Ray) birthday. Turns out he meant Ray from the Ghostbusters who was a regular in their house. He grew out of it.
However, I’d suggest your house is defo haunted 😉
climbingkevFree MemberAs mick r, Uvex 5508 through work. One tinted, one clear pair. Vision is a bit “flat” on the periphery due to the plastic safety lens. If it were my money I’d have a punt at those Oakleys above.
climbingkevFree Member£18k fully spec’d when prices start at £9.5k. It must come pretty naked as standard. £18k would get you a lot of second hand Jap/German 4×4 and a new bike for the roof.
climbingkevFree MemberA mate got a Duster, by the time he’d specc’d it to a level that made it remotely comfortable it didn’t work out particularly cheap. I’m not aware of their prices or spec so it may just be his perspective. He is “happy” with it apparently, although is under no illusions; it wasn’t a bargain.
climbingkevFree MemberI had an Op for a SLAP lesion 3 weeks ago. Your symptons sound like mine rather than a frozen shoulder. Get a proper diagnosis. And physio.
climbingkevFree MemberTo quote Wesley Snipes, “Always bet on black”. Your guaranteed winnings will easily cover the flight to Monaco. 8)
climbingkevFree MemberSoft shell trousers are great, I’ve got some TNF Apex ones and as much as I loath everything TNF they are great. To be honest some decent breathable over-trousers with Ron Hills will give you a versatile option.
As above get some practice in crampons under the supervision of a mate on steady ground, I one took a BIG (150ft) fall and subsequent helicopter trip in the Alps because I managed to attach my right foot to my left shin.
You’ll love it, stay safe and enjoy!
climbingkevFree MemberCheck your tyres on the Mitsi, my Outlander came with all season tyres and I’ve never struggled in some pretty significant snow. That said I’ve never driven on full on winter tyres.
climbingkevFree Member+1 dbcooper
Teef – do you need a hand lifting that huge, broad brush? It must be mighty heavy! 😉
Demographic behaviour is more likely governed by the quality of the area than the residents owner/tenant status. That said, I agree, people do look after what belongs to them a little better.
climbingkevFree MemberCannibalise the others, keep 3 bikes. Sell the rest on, split for max dosh of you can be bothered.
climbingkevFree MemberMy Mega fits in the Thule as do many friends more crazy frame designs; Marin Quadlinks etc. It’s not the fork mounted one, wheels stay on. Clamps on the down tube, ratchets through spokes on the wheels.
climbingkevFree MemberUnless the OP’s been sitting on this grievance for 2 years it sounds like a recent development. So, the comments about doing your research are potentially ill founded. Listen to the publicans advice.
People do like complaining about people who complain don’t they!? Especially since they’re only asking for advice! And airport/railway analogy…. Bonkers.
climbingkevFree MemberDo the posher ones have lighter axles? I’ve seen 105 and XT fail at the crank arm, zero damage to the axle. My inner geek wants to visit the Shimano website now… But too tired.
climbingkevFree MemberProbably just the NDS crank arm. I did the same to a 105 was £22.50. Splines on the crank arm appeared significantly softer than those on the axle, so you should be in the same boat.
climbingkevFree Member+1 turbo, although I wouldn’t say 2 hours pass without even knowing it! Currently stuck in a sling after a shoulder op, 3wks of 6 in a sling down and I might be able to get my arm above my head by Easter. Dogshit. So far I’ve subscribed to Trainerroad (really enjoying it and it’s great for pain relief!) uploaded loads of music to google play, started the exams for 3 ranks above where I am now (Might as well get ahead of the game whilst I have the time off work), bagged loads of shit for the charity shop, reading a few books, sorted my dropbox admin, loads of dog walking, entered
Some sportives, changed energy/tinterweb suppliers and so on. Not cooked a meal, changed a nappy or picked up dog poo this year………BOOM!climbingkevFree Member160mm for everything, worst case scenario; you’ll get fitter dragging it up hill or you’ll die due to the increased ill-founded bravardo that extra 20mm gives on the way down!
climbingkevFree MemberNice one Dibbs! Ordered.
Google Fit is pretty good as an App activity tracker. I never realised it was on my phone until it started congratulating me. Distinguishes between walking/running/cycling and is yet to register a car journey by mistake. Links with HRM app, fitness pal, runtastic etc if you’re into that.
climbingkevFree MemberCheers folks.
Quick google suggests the PD-530’s are one sided, so not what I really want. CB Mallet DH = £££, although the float and big platform appeals. My reasoning is the Mavics have a largish platform, lots of float; 13 or 17degs, and are reliable and cheap. Giro Chambers look interesting, bit more expensive but doable – thanks do the Germans! I’ll try and try a few on before ordering. 😉
climbingkevFree MemberGot Mrs climbingkev a Garmin vivofit, she likes it, a little obsessed with the numbers, but that’s the point I guess. Gets used as the wee mans teething toy more than anything, the buckle is crap. If I were to get one it would be Garmin to fit with everything else. Prob Forerunner 15 which is also a GPS running type thing for an extra £15. I wouldn’t get an exclusive activity tracker personally.
Points to note:
Pushing a buggy/cycling = no exercise
If you’re going to use a hammer and bolster put it on the hammer hand!climbingkevFree MemberLay it stuck side down fill the BB with coke. Worth a try overnight.
climbingkevFree MemberRent to buy? Use you savings as a deposit, depending on the houses market and rental value you might be set to make each month. You could also adjust the mortgage to either extend the term, reduce the payments and realise more cash each month? Interest only should see you quids in if the mortgage is nearly paid off. I’d definitely see a mortgage advisor on it, see who can lend and their costs and terms, crunch the numbers and give it some thought. I’ve done this a few times as has the wife, our approach is to keep the mortgages as repayment as we view them as pensions when they are one day all bought and paid for. Clearly there are the maintenance costs to consider as a landlord, but you can make it work.
climbingkevFree MemberRab microlight. I’ve got an over the head one with a hood (it was a sample that never made it to production, but I love OTH and hoods). Weighs nowt, packs into its own chest pocket. Got a bit upset when caught out in the rain as its down, yet it faired pretty well, frequently wear it in drizzle. Dries quick and hasn’t lost it’s loft, not sure whether it may have some hydrophobic treatment.

climbingkevFree Member08 2.2d Diamond. Love it, I’ll drive it til it dies, which shouldn’t be anytime soon (touch wood). 3 bikes easy with front wheels of in the back, so 3 bods and 3 bikes and kit inside, no probs. Had 5 lads and a weeks worth of climbing/camping kit in it for a Fontainebleau trip, got just shy of 38mpg, driving at the speed limit.
I did have a few mechanical issues following a shit service where some dick forgot to replace a seal so diesel for in the box and clutch. Thankfully he paid, sorted now.
climbingkevFree MemberRachel’s!!!!! From Saintsbury’s or ASDA. Full fat, various flavours. The lemon one is awesome. Missus is a bit particular about what the wee man gets and this is one of the best out there, natural, no sugar etc. 2 for £3. Get the one with ginger for your breakfast smoothie!
