Sheriff Lodge, Matlock. Ran by a work colleague, lots of folk rate it (although I’ve never stayed myself) and a 1 min walk to my local, a cracking pub that does good, cheap food. The Sycamore.

I’ve rode a 5 (good), 5AM (just wrong and unbalanced), alpine (good also) and ended up buying a Mega which is better up and down IMHO. And bags cheaper! The shock is the weakest link but for the price of an alpine frame with 36’s you could get a Mega with CCDB and BOS Devilles! Which would be awesome!

If its going onto wood, put a load of screws into the wood, slate on top and tweak (turn) the screws until a level surface is achieved. Apply morter or tile adhesive with a grooved trowel (to create ‘suction’). Fix slate on top. The screws ensure its level and the adhesive doesn’t just squish out. My similar fixes are solid and an uneven underside means a better purchase than a smooth underside.

    Hope that helps!?

I’m wanting to do the same…..with the same to sell, oddly enough. However, think my fitness would see me running a 32t chainring due to the terrain in the peaks, so I’m concerned about spinning it out downhill. Although that funky 9-36 cassette from hope could give a perfect range, when my lottery numbers come in!

+1 Sean Yates, was local to me as a lad. My Dad explained his role to me as “the one all does all the f**king hard work whilst the others goal hang”. Chalked his name on my garage floor as though it was a French B road.

    Inflate with tube in overnight.
Tube out, unlocking one rim bead only!
    Peg the “unlocked” side.
Inflate with track pump, with valve core removed.
Sealant in via removable core valve.
Shake, set…………flip, shake, set etc, etc.

Lock-out does make a difference on mine. Not really played with the rebound……..perhaps I should!?

    DBW,

I’ve had mine about 3 months and love it. Demo’d the Orange 160 and 5AM, the Mega just felt a lot better especially on the climbs. I’m 5ft10″ on a Med with a 60mm stem and a layback post. At your height you might want a Med with an inline post and stumpy (40mm) stem, or go the other way and stick a set-up like mine on a small…..your call but if its for all dayers the Med might be a wiser choice. Could and have happily spent all day on it all over the Peaks, it’s surprisingly agile and rides lighter than it is. Not sure what mine weighs would guess around 32lb with coil lyrics, Hope 3 SP4AM on Flows (tubeless) SLX double and bash, XT gears and brakes and Nukeproof finishing kit. I’ve given mine plenty of abuse and it’s fine. Spoke to Hotlines yesterday (after seeing the other thread) they’re only aware of the 2 in the Alps that failed on 2 guides who apparently were Downhilling all day, every day all summer. Pretty much all bikes have a “history” especially when ridden like that so I’m not concerned (Although I thought they’d been a UK failure as well?).

So it’s a Med, 32lb, a yes and a very well from me!

My local is The Sycamore, 5min walk from town centre, but a lovely pub, child and dog friendly, cracking food and beer and a kids menu!

“We’ll talk off-line” – i.e. they don’t know the answer or have the mental agility to make one up in front of their “subordinates”.

“There’s a lot happening in the margins” – i.e. claiming their privy to a lot more info than anyone else……..and therefore still unable to give an answer.

Fess up and say I “I don’t know, I owe you an answer”, then p**s off and find out. Makes me rage.

Try Feet First in Chesterfield, they did my 5.10 climbing shoes. There’s a place in Manchester/Stockport too I think that are meant to be very good and cheaper – google em!

    Get one!

Built mine up for £600 less than an Alpine 160 would’ve cost, (and it’s better spec’d throughout IMHO) it’s significantly lighter and (having ridden both) is better, especially on the ups! Ploughs down anything, even in my incapable hands.

    Built with Lyrik Coil U-Turns 1.5″ (£400 @ CRC)
    Hope Pro3 SPAM’s with Flows (£330 @ Winstanleys)
    SLX Double Chainset
    XT Everything else
Nuke Proof Head Set and finishing kit

    Under £2.4k all in.

Rab Baltoro Guide, had mine 6years, been dragged up rock, snowboarded and biked in. Would immediately buy another when it gets lost or stolen (because it shows no signs of wearing out). Keeps all but torential rain at bay too.

I’ve got a NP Mega, cannot fault it. Came from an On-One 456 and I honestly find this every bit as easy to ride all day…..easier in fact due to the comfort, weight is the same-ish as the Mega has decent wheels on and feels way more agile.

Demo’d a Orange 5AM and an Alpine, the Mega out-climbs them with ease, the Alpine is ok, but felt too much for me and the 5AM feels unbalanced with 160 forks on and climbs like poop! Also tried a Spicy briefly……just felt very “squishy”.

    Hope that helps?

Pitched all the way. If it’s a modest extension a modest (i.e. low)pitch won’t affect your neighbours too much. My Dad was a flat roofer who guaranteed work for 10years, don’t think he ever went back to one (in 30+ yrs of doing the job). Think horror stories are down to workmanship. The re-sale of a pitched roof is always better especially if you vault the ceiling and stick in a velux. Your modest extension will seem a lot bigger for minimal cost. So for reasons other than reliability I’d go pitched……tiling is also a LOT easier than felting, if you’re thinking of repairs in 25yrs. (my original slate roof was re-done after over 100yrs only because the nails rusted and slates slipped!).

Is that a single chain-ring……..I can’t see a front mech?

Although it looks like the Bash and Chain-ring are both being run on the outer spider. I’m not familiar with the XTR chain-set, but surly that means there’s an inner spider free and the set-up in the pic has been achieved with some longer chain-ring bolts and spacers? Therefore at Gamut double or E13 DRS should be workable……. 😕

Sad news mate, I’m dreading the day.

Watched Marley and Me the other night, I defy any man not to weep………had to do the old “cuppa coffee darling?” and scuttle off to the kitchen trick.

Awesome “I’m menacing but fun” pic btw!

16 is a good innings and I’m pretty sure he’d want you to celebrate with a beer 😉

fortunateson09: Have you lost the odd shaped (like a “9”) washer that’s in the pinch bolt? It has a pin that locks into a hole on the cranks splined shaft. Another and probably the most likely cause of your NDS crank arm dropping off. I’m struggling to believe that the end cap is engineered to (i.e. was) holding you crankset on……like all things I could be (ok, probably am!) wrong!

Regal Military Tailors. Did my Mess and Dress kit and suit. Outstanding, you will pay for it mind. However, you choose the fabric, lining, cut, pockets, breast, vents the works. My Corps wouldn’t let us use anyone else, I thought it was a bit of a farce at first, but then you see why. A google should return something. London based.

    Congratulations too!

Got my hoops from Winstanley’s, they were fine when they eventually arrived after 3 amended delivery dates. However, the axle coverters posted were wrong even after a long phone call to confirm as they were needed for a holiday. This along with other stock was wrong….twice. Not an apology or a call back on one of the 3 occasions they promised. They wouldn’t despatch the correct goods until I returned mine even though I was happy to bridge the cost and get a refund at a later date. “no we want to confirm you’ve received the wrong goods (again)”! Now they’re not paying my return postage as promised.

Will never shop at Winstanley’s again, regardless of price.

    ….and relax…

What rise bars are people using? With the external headset and 40mm rise bars mine feels a bit “lofty”. I’m an average 5’11” on a medium frame, stem is 60mm, 6deg. Thinking of going 20mm or even flat…..anyone tried a few combo’s and fancy sharing their thoughts?

Tweaking aside I love it although it’s use has been brief so far……damn work!

My understanding is that the circumference of a 36t chain-ring lies bang in the centre of the suspension pivot (that’s certainly how it looks on mine – un-ridden as yet as Winstanleys are muppets…..a long story ) therefore the chain pull neither pulls the swing-arm up or down.

So all the time you have a granny ring it’s not even relevant. I’d imagine the need for a 32t over 36t would out-weigh the bob factor(if it’s even noticeable!!!).

Ok – NP only do 135x12mm rear hubs, so that answers that question!

I can’t find Pro3 specific kits, but the Hope site says they defo do…..maybe you just use Pro2 kits?

    Matlock!

I’ve pretty much binned the driving to Ladybower, Hope, Cannock etc for what’s on the doorstep. Once you find the gems they’re easily linked and there’s plenty of unexplored green left on the OS map. Plus there’s active clubs, although I just get out with mates as my shift pattern would make me the most sporadic club rider ever!

15mins from M1 and further south than Sheffield in case London was on the work agenda. My folks live Maidstone way and the drives sub 3hr and not so sad. I wouldn’t move for the world.

And if you climb as well……….

That said Sheffield and Glossop have excellent trails too. I’d go Sheffield, personally especially if you could locate out to Totley or Dore, i.e just inside the Peaks.

I thought of a similar idea, but take it a step further…….. you offer a “personal shopper” service. Things like headset, bb, chainset, through axle compatibility, seat post/collar diameters still confuses some so you shop for them, be it online, lbs wherever. You recommend and shop for appropriate parts and establish a shoppers fee (5-10% maybe) plus your labour fee. The parts will fit and be compatible, you replicate internet prices, there’s a face to face style service and you get your “fettling-fix”!

I think some would subscribe to this, whether it’s enough to be a viable business is another matter, but low stock/overheads is a big bonus! Would love to know how you get on!

Cheers all, makes perfect sense. Would I be right in thinking that by having a larger front disc and pulling on the levers equally the bike would have a more balanced and controlled stopping behaviour? A form of automatic modulation if you like?

They ID your computer and as time passes and you continue to browse and shop around they raise the price……you panic and buy. So, shop around, find the cheapest, clear your history, cookies, cache etc go back to the cheapest flight and you’ll be offered the original (and most likely lower) price!
