Cynic-al, really like the inner tube idea but does it rub the paint off the frame when the forks twist?

Thanks TiRed, my rollers are elite arion parabolic – basic non resistance 3 roller design that you just balance your bike on and im obsessive about keeping the same tyre pressure, gear ratio and cadence so hopefully, my only variables are fitness and health. I don’t want to start spending on smart trainers and am hoping i can get away with my cheap rollers

Thanks all, lots of good advice. I’m using a 52/15 ratio and cadence of around 95 so I don’t think I’m at the top of the rollers limit but I will try to find a suitable place outside to redo the test. I wanted to use the rollers because the test would be repeatable regardless of weather. If I use 184×0.9 as suggested, I get 166 which isn’t that far off 170 so 170 looks more sensible than 151. My old hr sensor started spiking 5 days after the 151 test so perhaps it was on the way out when I did that test. I did originally think that 170 was too close to 184 to be realistic but I was shattered after 30 minutes

Thanks for the replies. I replaced a very old garmin hr chest monitor with a new garmin version last week. The old one started spiking wildly about two weeks ago and a battery replacement made no difference. Im 54 and am fairly confident that my max hr is 184 and resting is about 52. The 184 number has been fairly repeatable and comes from riding a long uphill with a really technical rooty last section which i have only cleared a few times and im really gasping at the end of it. It just seems confusing that with the same cadence and gear ratio that there should be such a large jump in hr, perhaps i should have waited more than 20 mins for my porridge and tea to have been digested!

For uk weather, it’s a brilliant jacket. Good down to 5c with a thin base layer, super breathable, good in rain. You can stop worrying about the weather and what to wear. I’ve got the non convertible one and you can pick them up for £100. My only criticism is they are a bit logo heavy, I prefer the endura fs260 but don’t know if it performs aswell

    126 rides
    216 hrs
    3165 miles
    47,139m elevation

Mix of MTB and road and a little bit of rollers ( which i still find scary and exhausting )

Good year for me as i have also done hiking, swimming and running for the first time in years

Really impressed with some of the numbers some of you have achieved as im retired and have loads of time to play

Really pleased with Bontrager Flare RT Rear Bike Light although only had it for about 3 months. Like the irregular light pattern.

Really pleased with endura FS260 and like that they are British. Not impressed with comfort of Gore Power or Howies longevity. Have a very old pair of Sportful which are super comfy but too old to remember the model. Looking at the above, this post is going to give you too much choice! I didn’t realise that Lusso were made in the UK, that would probably swing it for me as Endura aren’t.

To balance the discussion, im a garmin fan. Had the 500, edge 25 and now a 530 aswell as an Instinct. All working well with Apple iPhone, iPad and Mac Mini. I did have an issue about a month ago where i lost direction prompts but Garmin help resolved it and there was another issue with an Apple update where I struggled with bluetooth but Garmin resolved that quickly aswell. It may be worth asking Garmin help for support before making a costly change, they have been really helpful with me in the past

Im surprised by ajaj’s comments about anchovies, i can’t feel them and pump the tyre back up to about 70 psi immediately with no problems – maybe its the type of anchovie

I’ve used Hutchinson performance and Continental 5000 on roval slx24 wheels for about 3000 miles. I’ve used an achovie in the 5000 and I was back up and running in about 3 minutes, really impressed with the lack of fuss compared with changing a tube. Running about 10 psi less. Generally pleased with the change but I always have an achoive preloaded on the little fork as they are hard to load. Both tyres went on very easily.

My instinct is also counting lengths incorrectly. Other than manually editing the activity, did anyone find a fix for this? Thanks

Another rad8 fan, for me the main part is 0 and the bottom portion is +2. I use them for bikes, running and walking, I can now read my Garmin again

I know that what I have just achieved doesn’t compare with some of the epic runners on this thread but I have finally completed the couch to 5k plan. 8 months ago, I could ride a bike all day but couldn’t run 1 step due to a couple of ops. I have had to stop and start lots of times due to minor injuries but it’s great to be running again in my fifties. New goal is to break 25 mins! Thanks to everyone for keeping me motivated

Hi Edukator, we were based in Panticosa and most walks were between Panticosa and the border with one walk in France ( Ayous Lakes ). You’re right about the weather, only today was cloudy with visibility down to 100m but it was a nice change to be 10C cooler! The refuge we stayed in was called Respomuso, great simple food and the beer was flowing! And to Doug, yes I would be interested so please report back

Thanks for all the advice. We have just completed 6 days in the Spanish Pyrenees with Colletts. We actually did self guided using Colletts route guides and we had one night in a refuge which was a brilliant atmosphere, we all learnt to read maps and the biggest day had 1300m of ascent. As you said, hut to hut would have been too hard but by the end of the week the kids were setting the pace and what a stunning location

Why is no one talking about neoshell anymore, I was under the impression it was the best of everything but especially breathability

I did this 30 years ago and the holiday cost £170 all in! One of the best holidays I’ve ever had. We slept under the stars, I was in 2nd hand walking boots and we carried all our food for a week. At the time I was very much a city boy so it was a fantastic adventure, hope you have fun

Really interested to hear how you get on with these tyres. I had no problems inflating them on rival slx24 wheels but the conti 5000 is almost down to the bottom of the wear indicators after only 1400 miles on the rear, I’m 67kg and run it at 80 psi. The fusion performance has been great on the front clocking up 2500 miles so far but a disaster on the back. The first tyre lasted 3 rides before getting a 6 mm gash on the top of the tread, I replaced it and that tyre lasted two rides before suffering the same fate. About to try irc x guard on the rear

I switched from a roubaix to a Tarmac a couple of years ago – didn’t notice much of a difference in comfort but massive difference in fun factor. How about dropping tyre pressures by 5psi or 10 if your wheels are tubeless compatible and you switch to tubeless, or a forgiving carbon seatpost.

Interested to hear how you get on fivealive as this is my plan. Currently have xr3 on front and icon on back but when weather turns I will change to forecaster front / XR3 back. xr4 looks to draggy for front for North Downs in Kent

You might want to check pauls cycles as they have big discounts on 2018 anthems

I will also vote for jade jones. She was having a late drink with what looked like family and coaches the night before a Grand Prix eventi a local non flashy hotel. My daughter and I butted in to say good luck and she stopped her conversation to talk to us for a few minutes – my daughter was so happy

I posted on here a few weeks ago about mine. Bought a 2018 from Paul’s cycles at 27% off and I’m really pleased with it. Fast comfortable nimble and fun. I’m a bit old school so not too worried about the dropper although ks do one in 27.2 and I think giant may have one too. Although the discount pushed me towards the 2018 model, i also wanted shimano as opposed to sram. If you want to know anymore, ask away

This was a real big deal for me, for the same reasons as you plus reading my garmin. I went with rad8 photochromic mtb glasses, +2 in the bottom and 0 in the top. They have been a revelation and I now use them for runnning, bikes and hiking and the photochromic lenses work so well. I should be on commission with rad8 because I’m constantly raving about these glasses!

Very pleased with my rad 8 prescription photochromic glasses. I’m +2 in the bottom and 0 in the top. I wear them for cycling, running and hiking. It’s good to be able to read my garmin again!

Thank you all, and knowing that the image doesn’t show in the dialogue box is key!

Anyway, new bike and I’m loving it. Replaced a slack 27.5 hard tail and it is so fast and nimble – much prefer the tighter head angle and 29 wheels.

Also first giant in 28 years of mtb’s, really impressed with attention to detail. And to Paul’s cycles for outstanding service and telephone support

Thanks Drac but I’m still being a bit thick. Once I’ve copied the direct link do I select the img tab in the dialogue box and paste it there or just paste into the dialogue box. And should I see the image in the dialogue box or just the script?

    Thanks
