We run a small B&B (Old Dairy) in Low Row, Swaledale, on the C2C.

The walking is excellent, though not craggy like the Lakes.

The villages are much smaller and much less ‘cosmopolitan’ than Keswick.

Reeth does have reasonable pubs but only a couple of shops.

Recommend the Farmers Arms in Muker. The Punch Bowl in Low Row is OK.

    I recommend it, I live here! 🙂

    Or base yourself in Swaledale.

The Tan Hill loop is a classic, also options into Wensleydale and back over Butter Tubs.

P.S. Hope the mods are OK with the link as it is a direct and relevant response to the OP.

Anyone mentioned the bridleway from Tees Head (Cross Fell) to Blencarn in the N. Pennines..?

I appeared for a second helping load a Sherpa van about 50 mins in. Surreal watching the roads and hills I ride on TV!

    I enjoyed it 😉

    Hi

Tan Hill -> Keld is covered in a Vertebrate Graphics guide to N Yorks Dales. done downhill (N-S) and soft i.e. avoid in winter.

The KS -> Keld is part of the Wainwright C2C route, you might find that a useful search to try.

The section from Low Row to Langthwaite has just had tish surface dressing put on it.

Chipping misery now 🙁 I live 300 yards from the start of it.

    Walk the water splash…

    …weather forecast looks perfect 🙂

    Good luck.

    Swaledale is dark…

there’s a good bridleway leading south from Moor House to Low Row Pasture.

Ooh so there is. Not done that. Next time I’m up there.

Eh! Get off my land!! 🙂

That is my usual back home to Low Row.

A good option for bailing near the end if tired. Follow the track, not the map to Barf End. Bear L through gate and past small standing stone (FP on map) and sharp back down right at next gate/wall into Gunnerside.

Sorry, no gpx, but you could leave Stockport via Chadkirk, Peak Forest Canal and Sett Valley Trail to get to Hayfield. Many great routes across the hills via Edale or Castleton.

Another CX-style option is just to take the Trans Pennine Trail across then work your way south.

I got the train to Hathersage and followed the southern skyline of the Hope Valley westwards as far as the Pennine Bridleway then north to Hayfield and back into Stockport via Sett Valley and Peak Forest Canal.

    Second this suggestion…

‘If you are looking at the Great Pinseat/Gunnerside tracks then Surrender Bridge on the road between Low Row and Langthwaite is a good point.’

    Lower your expectations?

If it is fast enough to work from home you are on a winner.

We get 3 max. OK for work systems, Skype, Eurosport.tv Others up the Dale have satellite and find it generally slower and expensive initial setup cost.

Swaledale is perfect for the trail running/MTB combo

    http://www.openadventure.com/open5/2015-16/yorkshire-dales.php

    as an example.

Easy access from A1, Stay at the Dales Bike Centre. Also SwaleOutdoors for running.

As for kayaking, look up the vids on Youtube… 🙂

    How about Swaledale???

    Must be good, I live here/there 😉

Ace XC mountain biking and superb road riding.

Other comments above about climate, villages & shops apply.

Has been very dry here since May…
    …not now though 🙁

    Good luck

The Cygnus Milky Way from Swaledale.

Partly to see how well it shows on the forum page.

Vega is star to top right.

Milky Way runs top left to bottom right. Dark areas are formed by dust.

Yes, it is all interpreted(ive) in some way 🙂

Maybe I’m trying to convey some sort of realism?

HDR is usually not to *my* taste.

Signposting is very good. I had a map and had done a bit of research on the route. The map wasn’t used on the day(s).

May’s (Aladdin’s Cave) Farm Shop is a great pit stop. A few 100m off route (on road). All the fuel and spring water that you will need (probably closed at night!).

    A sensible time?

Allow 8 hours start to finish (not some Garmin/Strava ‘moving time’) including pit stops, one puncture and gate opening if solo.

    YMMV.

They do half the job as they are…half the size?

I’ve the long version on road and wide version on MTB. They are way better than nothing. Haven’t fallen off or apart, yet. Though I’m not an aggressive rider;)

    YMMV

    Hi Ton

My suggestion would be to leave out Mull.

    Barra-Uists-Harris-Skye.

We had a stunning 2 weeks doing that last summer (by car).

    Hope you get the weather!
