the 2007 Five is built around an optimum fork height of 150mm and is warranted for a 160mm, so it's not going to make it feel like a chopper and mess up the handling….

    hi sean

i've got a 2007 Five 20" and run air pikes on it which are great, never seem to need to wind them down either, so i've also been considering investing in a 2010 Talas 36 – 160mm for dh and 130mm for everything else; as the middle setting (130mm) will be much the same as the pike at 140mm

i've also got a lyrik 2-step on a 18" patriot xcel and considered the swop but unfortunately orange cut the steerer way too short for my Fives massive headtube… typical!

the lyrik isn't light thought (2.5kg), and i find it no way as adjustable as the pike as it is solo air and not dual – the pike is way plusher, but the 115mm travel setting is a god send for climbing on the patriot. My 2-step has also had to be repaired twice now, so i've little confidence with it on long weekends/holiday trips away

115mm 2-step will be similar to a pike wound down to 120mm-ish

ton – i've done it on my ti29er, although i've since SS'ed that and bought a Scandal SD and put the alfine on that for commuting duties (although as the commute is flat and i only use seventh gear so i'm thinking of swopping it back now and ss'ing the scandal with a 13t cog – typical!

been using a 25mm carbon layback and 90mm stem from day one to get my preferred reach and comfort – thing I found was that it put my weight too far back and it didn’t climb very well unless my revelations were set at about 100-110mm – it was a great marathon HT though but for a XC HT I preferred a Soul at 120mm…

riding buddy had a 2nd hand 2005 one and the chainsuck was a club joke, he loved the ride but couldn’t put up with the constant chainsuck so he sold it (with considerable scarring) for about £350

i thought about getting rid of my 2008 19″ as well TBH – i should have got the 20″ instead but hay ho…. no interest when i posted it up for £700 last year though

I’d would rather hang it off the wall than accept less than £600 for something in such good condition – shame really, it should be ridden…

used a XT conventional on mine fine… but that wasn’t the SD model

riding buddy runs a top swing on his – i’d post a picture of it but fotopic is having issues….

this is how i get on the commute home, feel really slow and almost light headed by the end – with crap reactions, tired arms etc.

will end up in the canal one day :o

will try a few alternative brekkies then – porridge (i like the huge rolled oats sainsburys do) or maybe a bit of fish

thing is i’m not really that hungry at 6am and have to make myself eat breakfast

alternatively i may skip or at least just have a bannana for breakfast and have a big bowl of museli when i get into the office

I converted my DT 240 hubs to the 9mm front and 10mm rear RWS system on a FSer

i definitely see the benefits of if on the front but don’t really notice it on the rear

<laughs to self> specialized will probably introduce a 10mm rear hub system similar to DT at some point and a long and expensive legal case will commence…. and it will include a plastic lever….

it always makes me laugh when companies (or there tech representatives) slag off other manaufacturers kit…

did it last year in a large group and recommend an early start

the riding doesn’t justify a full face helmet tbh

have fun overtaking the teams of fat euro xc riders in lyrca! ;)

at some point over the last four years i’ve used all those forks on my cotic soul (ronin 110mm, marathon xc’s 100-120mm, reba team 85-115mm)

currently using minute elite tpc’s at 120mm because of the through axle

wouldn’t have an issue with recommending a reba at all

i tried the 2.4″ 29er version on the front around delamere forest in winter and found them horrendous on any wet roots and greasy off-camber corners, they were good at llandegla though

i’ve had this with a brand new Kenda Nevegal UST tyre – i put it down to a faulty bead on the tyre, as it would not stay on the bontrager or mavic UST wheelsets i run tubeless or even with a innertube
