probably just started and learning the ropes ton, but many LBS staff (male or female) don't have a clue

i've had a bloke look at me as if i was speaking another language in one chester bike shop when i wanted to purchase a star fangled nut for a new fork i wanted to fit

"we don't do nuts and bolts mate, try B&Q" was his reply…

try the big betty's as a replacement of the fat alberts, the 2.4's come up at around 60-62mm wide

one tip is to ignore the 2.1"/2.3" measurement and instead check the dimensions that are stamped on the rubber sidewalls, for example many 2.35 maxxis tyres are listed as 52mm on the side of their carcass

TPC all the way for me, I did try an absolute 29er fork but hated the spiky feeling the platform damping provided

used the POC VPD Knee Pads for the first time on saturday in minus five temperatures and they managed to keep my knees very warm indeed

sizing is a bit tight though with the large, i don't really need the velcro straps at all – i did try for a laugh to put on my mates size small ones on but i couldn't get them past my calf muscles :D

was up there this morning and it was damn cold, and too icy on some sections so we mostly stayed in the forest

I bought a 2.4 MK 29er tyre at beginning of this year, thinking the big knobs (fnarr) would work well in the mud

first tried it at llandegla trail centre and it was fine; then rode it round delamere forest (or at least tried) and discovered it was utter useless in the clear the mud, doesn't clear muck well and is completely allergic to all roots

tbh – i've stopped buying continental tyres as i find them rubbish, over priced, under sized, over weight, crap performers – reminds me of a lass i once dated… :|

not used the sunline thicks, but do have the bontrager big earl lock-on's, and they are larger than the average grip

i'm sure a 115 BB would still work okay and provide a little more clearance

i really like my deus on the five, the rings appear to last longer than the shimano xt ones, but the BB's are poor (and thats being polite) – i use a hope BB with mine now

i've gone down the same avenue pj – kinda wanted more travel on my 5, well more than the pike, still have to be through axle and adjustable travel

    options were 55 ATA, lyric coil u-turn, 36 talas, 2010 revelation 150mm u-turn, lyrik 2-step

ruled out the 55 cause of reliability, u-turn cause is a faff and my existing lyrik 2-steps have failed twice and quite weighty, sooooo got some new 2010 36 Talas forks on order through Progressive Bikes, much cheaper than anywhere else i could find

definitely take a map, it is not a waymarked trail and nothing like llandegla, you will be using road, bridleway and country lanes

not done it for a while but can assure you it will be muddy and wet in sections

my minute absolutes were actually 29er 100mm ones and a bugger to set up air pressure wise – they either blew through their travel and bottomed out harshly or simply never achieved 70% travel and again still felt harsh and spikey – i even sent them back for work under warranty, initially on their return they did feel plusher but quickly reverted to giving me painful wrists….

the elite tpc ones are 26er 120mm and feel completely better for not having the platform system IMO

both forks were £400! sold the absolutes for £200 though

i've a spare Minute Elite TPC with the thro' axle at 120mm travel – a really liked 'em and for some stupid reason swapped them off the soul for a set of new rebas (which are very good as well)

i've also tried the absolute damped forks but found them terrible compared to the tpc ones

good – nice damping, stiff, reliable

bad – bolt through axle system slow to change compared to maxle light

worth it? – yes for the right price

just been out around round delamere again this evening steve

and yep, the still muddy for monday night niche bikes were fun – plus we didn't get lost without our usual escorts!

just been out on this round delamere forest this evening (the bike not the pussy)

set up single speed 32:20 (cause i am soft), and i've just put a 27" risers and a 90mm stem on it, plus increased the travel of the forks to 100mm

it is ace in the forest singletrack, its a nice/springy frame, the 2.2 acx's do rub a little bit on the rear – my only gripe is this it is a bit twitchy going down steep sections, the 72.6 degree head angle doesn't help, that is why i've increased the fork travel to 100mm

was getting some ribbing for these seat stays tonight as well ;)

i have same opinion of the mud-x's (i.e. not that impressed)

i just use the tubeless ready bonty acx tyres instead, much more of an all rounder and still clears mud well

for quite dry conditions (like the past september) the xdx's were great

    nb: all 29er tyres

reckon my choice would be the new 2010 lyrik coil, but if the spring size won't work for you then the lyrik solo air model instead

i went with a set of reba sl 120mm maxle light, brand new £240 off evil-bay

reckon the talas 32 would work quite as well, it have a 15QR version on another HT

reckon dipper is very busy at the moment…

a mate received his set very quickly, must have been in the first batch, i've not heard back from him about mine yet (although i have asked for a non-standard 12mm rear axle addition)

from a rock shox set up guide:

Low Speed Compression – controls shock movement when it is moving down into its travel slowly (ie: low shaft speed). Low speed compression can be tuned to provide maximum sensitivity to small bump input and reduce movement under the rider’s shifting weight.

Not sure why you would want to fit 36;s to one, you should be looking at the alpine 160 for that. I'd go with 32 Talas 150's and save almost 2lb in weight.

my 2007 Five is built around a 150mm fork and warrantied for a 160mm, i'm currently running pikes on it and have no need for the U-turn feature – i definitely want to run 36's on mine

If I find a Blur 4x- I'm selling my OrangeFive. No doubt

a completely irrelevant point to this thread…
