    from £400

Didn't think they'd announced the UK pricing yet? $499 is more like £299 at current exchange rates. Although obviously they could just do $1=£1 like so many others do….

you cant easily work on it. therefore you need a laptop

FFS, how many times, IT'S NOT DESIGNED FOR WORKING ON, that's not it's primary purpose.

    its well trendy. get one

What's the point, having ignored reasoned argument you now resort that kind of comment.

I'd forgotten just how pointless attempting to have a reasoned discussion is on this bloody forum.

I don't think it's supposed to be a laptop replacement.

I own a laptop, but I can still see the attraction of having an iPad for casual surfing, games, reading and other stuff. The laptop is unwieldy, slow to boot, relatively heavy, has poor battery life and is generally overkill for that kind of casual use, the iPhone is hampered by the small size of it's screen. The iPad fits neatly in between.

Besides there is no rule that says once you have a laptop in your household you aren't allowed any other computer devices. It seems like an iPad would be an ideal casual use device (if it's cheap enough) for households with less laptops than there are users.

you obviously dont have to work, yet waste time on the move then. seems its a toy. no thanks

We get the idea, you won't be buying one.

If Apple are right however, you don't represent their target demographic, LOTS of whom will buy one.

Are you going to get this cross every time you see someone using one? Maybe you have "issues" and should consider anger management classes?

    that's not a camera, **** off.

    Now there's a pop-up I'd like to see 😆

It does have a camera connector accessory which allows you to import photos either from an SD card or via your camera's USB connector. I wonder what would happen if you plugged other USB peripherals into the USB camera connector?

i'd rather spend about £280 on a hackintoshed mini dell with a 120gig drive and full OS

Which I'm sure makes you just the kind of buyer Apple are aiming the iPad at – not! 🙄

Can't believe this thread has run to 6 pages already! If you don't like them, don't buy one. Sheesh.

Maybe this thread should be preserved somewhere for posterity, then in two years time half the posters can feel very smug and the other half can admit they were wrong….. oh hang on, this is STW, posters are always smug and no-one ever admits they were wrong. 🙄

There seems to be a consensus that multitasking will arrive (for both iPhones and iPads) with the 4.0 release of the iPhone OS, probably around the time the iPad arrives.

Be interesting to see what the UK pricing is, £499 at $1:£1 or roughly £299 at $1:£0.62, it's a big difference.

    From Routebuddy's site:

    Battery Power whilst tracking

Tests on an iPhone 3GS which had everything switched on, including roaming as well as location based services (l.b.s. need to be on for the GPS to work) found that a “battery down to 10%” warning was shown after approximately 2hrs of use. However, the phone and tracking was still working up to 2hrs 40mins.

note: Please do not assume that every phone will be the same, this note is just for guidance!

To conserve battery power whilst tracking it can help to switch of roaming. If you are not using tracking or do note need to know your location then you can also turn location based services off.

Some customers have opted to by additional battery power packs to lengthen the time of tracking.

The Dakota would probably work fine, albeit the Satmap seems to fare better in reviews

The Routebuddy App looks neat, not sure I fancy lashing my iPhone to my handlebars though, you'd be buggerred if it rained! Do they do 1:25k now, thought it was only 1:50k?

Funnily enough I was just about to ask the same question….. I can't really be bothered with mapping out routes in advance though, I just want to glance at a map and think "oh somewhere over in that direction". The Edge 605/705 looks the obvious choice I guess, although the advantage of the Satmap would be that it could be used for off road navigation as well. Does anyone know what additional maps would be needed for road riding with either the Edge or the Satmap? Is the basemap that comes with them sufficient on it's own?

    I agree with this guy:

it would be interesting to see it work for STW….

Actually IIRC he said they would work better….

Got some on my on-one 29er. Brant said they would work fine…. and they do.

They could do that instead of posting on here.

Do a LOT of research, and if you're going in go in ASAP (compound interest)- read up on annuity/annuity purchase, money purchase scheme, tax relief, higher rate tax relief, annual management fees, commission, % growth, fund manager, spreading across funds, risk spreading, age balanced portfolio, track record, fund switching, 25% tax free lump sum and keep your eye on the law………

Which is the nub of the problem IMHO, how many people have the time or ability to do that little lot?

It's a bit like someone posting a link to a website where you can download a leaked version of the next Girls Aloud album before it's been officially released

More like someone posting an image of the cover of the next Girls Aloud album on the net before it's been officially released. An album that everyone knows is likely to come out next year and can guess roughly what it will sound like.

Hated the way he kept referring to all indian food in the UK as crap in comparison to the "authentic" stuff….. tell that to the winners of his restaurant competition the other week (it was an indian restaurant!).

Only been out on the mountain bike once so far and that was crap, so much slush and mud around it's a slog going down hill let alone up. Just doesn't seem like fun at the moment.

Still commuting on the bike every day though – even in the snow, so it's not all bad 😀

Wondered the same myself. Certainly looks a nice idea, not sure whether a dedicated gps wouldn't be more practical though?

What Tom Morello has to say on the subject:

I used to have a soundgarden t-shirt with the catchy slogan "Total F**king Godhead" on the back….. which was nice.

Used to like there stuff, haven't seen much recently that I've liked, academic really though as they are now so expensive I can't afford them anyway.

Does the advertising not cover some of the costs of the forum? Or is it subsidised by the mag?

    ChrisS

(IMHO) DIRT is a magazine for people who love riding mountain bikes whilst STW is a magazine for people who love being mountain bikers.

I expect I'll still buy the odd issue if something in the contents grabs my eye. I don't really want to knock the mag 'cos I have a lot of sympathy for what they are trying to do, but I'm personally just finding it a bit dull and predictable. Maybe it's just 'cos I've been reading it for so many years.

Only mag I'm subscribing to at the moment is DIRT which I'm really enjoying, it's hard to put into words why but I think they do a great job of keeping the mag looking fresh and of conveying their enthusiasm for mountain bikes.

I've been a subscriber since the go-far days but I've just cancelled my subscription. The last few issues haven't had much in them that's interested me, don't think I've even bothered reading more than a couple of articles in the latest issue. Not sure why really, does get a bit samey after a while though.

Drac – no need for sarcasm.

You have to have a shortlist for the final round of voting

That's what I wondered about. Why? What's the flaw with one user, one nomination per category, winner is the thing with the most nominations (ie. votes). What purpose does the final round of voting serve? genuinely curious.
