Hmmm, think I’m going off the idea, seen a few indifferent reviews and I’m not too keen on short top tubes.

    Ho hum.

I’m 6 1 so I’m pretty sure a large would be the one to go for. I just thought the eff tt looked a bit short, I didn’t want it too feel cramped.

The road stuff looks like fantastic deals, wish I could justify one of those £2k ti road bikes….

Planet-X had 46cm OS bars in their Big 500 Sale the other day… £15 IIRC.

Nice Rush. I guess you saw the review in DIRT?

    What size did you get?

Caught up with the second episode the other day, found it a bit annoying.

Couldn’t really believe the female police officer would go off with the priest to have an abortion within minutes of meeting him. Thought that the police chap sent in to investigate as he was supposed to be incorruptible turning out to have had an affair was just frustrating. Didn’t understand why the home office etc just abandoned the chap investigating simply because he’d had an affair and despite his house having been burnt down and lot’s of evidence of corruption. Don’t understand why the investigation into the shooting in the first episode wasn’t just restarted after a decent interval for the chap to recover from his wife’s miscarriage.

Can’t decide whether to bother with tonight’s, will probably end up watching it in the hope that all the baddies get their comeuppance in a suitable dramatic manner, however the trailer made it look like the plot was going to be exactly the same as the previous two episodes.

    Ho hum.

@ flatboy – I ordered an extra SRAM 950, 11-32 cassette that I don’t really need, let me know if you want it and it’s yours for the same price as planet-x.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, I’m going to try to get a bit more rest and try to push myself a bit more when I’m commuting, hopefully that should produce a noticeable improvement in my fitness.

    Ta.

@daveh – yeah I know. I hate driving to work though so I don’t really mind, I just find it soul destroying sitting in rush hour traffic, much rather be on my bike.

@mikey74 – I did play around with a HRM a bit a few years ago, found it a faff to use though and variations in traffic, road conditions and weather made it quite hard to interpret the results.

I’ll take a look at that SIS Nocte stuff, can’t do any harm to try it out I guess.

So what I need to do is train harder/better and get fitter so I have some energy at the weekends, then it will take less effort during the week to commute at the same speed and I’ll be less tired?

Thanks guys, lots of food for thought. Obviously the answer is a shiny new lightweight road bike – for the variety of course!!!!

I have to drive in on Friday for a change so it will be interesting to see whether it makes any difference at the weekend. Although I suspect by the time I’ve done a couple of long dog walks each morning on Sat and Sun I’ll still be knackered.

I still don’t really understand why I’m not just getting fitter and acclimatising to the effort though. Unless I’m ill I suppose, not convinced the doc is going to take it seriously if I turn up saying I cycle, dog walk, have a demanding job, a young son and don’t get enough sleep – so why am I tired? 🙄

Is 2×7 miles 5 days a week really that much? I’m kinda surprised it warrants recovery time. Whenever someone posts a commuting thread on here there always seem to be plenty of people commuting far further.

Hmmmm, interesting. I can see what your saying. Trouble is commuting by another means to get a rest day is tricky, public transport is rubbish, parking at work is oversubscribed and the wife usually needs the van to walk the dogs and the car to go to work. Likewise longer rides sound good but I can’t see myself getting up early enough to take a longer route in, besides I need to help get my son to school, and at the end of the day I’m knackered and I just want to get home to see my son before he goes to bed, get some tea and collapse in a heap…..

I ordered some shorts but couldn’t find any sizing info so just guessed. I think my old on-one big shorts are an XL and they fit my 36″ waist, 6ft 1 height just fine. Hopefully the S2 stuff is similar.

It’s all kind of self fullfilling. They choose celebs rather than plebs for these things ‘cos they know they’ll get more free publicity which equals more cash…. Moyles barely managed 5 minutes without mentioning it for weeks before hand. But then they have to make sure the celebs make it up and that it looks suitably challenging otherwise all the people who chipped in will feel cheated.

What’s depressing is that it takes crap like this to induce people to give to charity. If you want to help kids there is nothing to stop you donating your money to any number of charities at any time of the year….

Oh all right then, it was brilliant, whatever….

Although I have to admit I found myself laughing out loud when the first episode reached the point were Abu Grahib is recreated in the police cells, hoods, hoses and all!

I’ve not seen this weeks yet, however after last weeks I find myself agreeing with this comment on the telegraph website review:
Mr Walton points out that this production relies upon a paradox created by the juxtaposition of history and speculation. In such a ploy, the authenticity of the film direction invites the viewers to open their minds to the speculations made by the author. Unfortunately, as far as South Yorkshire in 1974 is concerned, authenticity requires more than just brown interiors and grey exteriors. For example, portraying villages such as Fitzwilliam as a bomb site in which feral children vanadalise property whilst a resident looks on passively, complete with flat cap and whippet, is such a grotesquely innacurate cliche that I am left with no sense whatsoever of historical accuracy, and therefore no motivation to take any part of the drama seriously. As someone who actually lived in that area in 1974, I confess to being somewhat irritated by pundits who, in their ignorance, are only too willing to believe the Third World shanty town depiction. And yet I am only just scratching the surface regarding the cliched indulgence that this production substitutes for supposed historical accuracy. Take it from me, this is not a new TV genre. Trash has been around for a long time and no amount of artistic talent can excuse such low bigotry.

The trouble with holiday accommodation isn’t filling it, it’s that it costs so much to buy in the first place that the rental yield doesn’t cover the mortgage and your living costs. What you need is a whacking great deposit or access to a very cheap loan. I guess the low interest rates might help but how easy would it be to find the loan…

We looked into buying up somewhere with a bit of land and potential for other buildings to be turned into holiday accommodation. I know people who’ve done this with an old farm in Wales and it seems to have worked out well for them, plenty of bookings, just busy a couple of days a week turning around the guests. The trouble is they bought years ago and now land/property prices have gone up so much that even with the equity in our house we couldn’t make the sums add up 🙁

The rear Hope hub on my commuter just suffered a similar fate, and that was far younger. I think it’s the amount of salt on the roads this winter that has caused it, it seems to eat the aluminium…

Hang on a minute, Brant did you just write:

The Ti456 continues, as far as I know, but as I didn’t even design (or redesign) that, and with it being such a part of the on-one character, I left it there. It’s also really expensive to make.

Now I’m confused, if you didn’t design it, then who did? I always assumed it was one of yours….

    Update:

Well it wasn’t quite that simple. I re-assembled and bled the brake then put two zip ties around the free piston, but they just stretched and the stuck piston didn’t move. So I put the caliper in a vice, a spanner over the good piston then 4 ties to hold the spanner in place…. the 4 ties stretched and the spanner bent! So finally I managed to squeeze a vise grip in place to restrain the good piston. Success!!!

Everything is now cleaned up, greased and re-bled (avid bleed kit) and seems to be working fine. Didn’t bother with new caliper seals as the old ones looked ok.

The rear brake next, hopefully that will be a bit easier.
