I had a Maxx D on the bars and a Diablo on the head for Relentless. It was like having a portable sun. No faff with cables. Reliably. Good backup.

    28 laps – unbelievable.

I managed 4 as part of a quad. My 4am lap took me 1:45 :o

3/10. Too short. Too little swearing.

Good build up. Shame you couldn’t deliver.

Haven’t read the rest of the thread but my 2cents (to stay with the American theme)

    – The guy was catching her up – he was obviously faster – how far back are you supposed to ride when you are going to pass someone anyway?

    – She shouldn’t have slammed the brakes on for a small root but I assume she is a beginner sot that’s the kind of thing that happens.

    – It did look a bit awkward/sore for her leg.

    – Major over reaction from her anyway.

    – Smooth trail – why did they need full face and all the body armour? – Does it get worse further down the trail.

    – Americans. Just Americans.

I’m in. I’m the fat bloke on the Fisher HooKoo with a dodgy helmet. Aiming for 5 laps as part of a quad.

will it not make the cockpit feel cramped?

It depends on what height/shape you are. Just buy a cheap stem and whack it on to try it. Or take it to your LBS and ask nicely to try a few different stems.

MTFU. Do a long XC route and sweat it out on the uphills.

Just remember that you are even more dehydrated than normal so you need to drink loads.

    Me too!

There are 2 or 3 ferries a day, generally it’s just as quick as anywhere else. More remote islands get a bit more of a delay.

Alpine Bikes have 2010 Genesis Core 20 for £599 with a free camelbak, lock, etc for £599. Can't see it on their website but it was there yesterday.

Sorry Alanl but you have no idea what you are talking about. Film? How old are you?

If you look at the time, expertise and effort a decent pro wedding photographer puts into a wedding it's very easy to understand why it can cost 1k +.

Rule 1 – Spend more money on photos than food. Food is pretty hard to get wrong and even if it's dull nobody will remember the next day. When do you ever hear anyone reminiscing about how good the food was at their wedding?

Photos last a lifetime and if you really want something decent it's worth hiring a decent pro.

A decent Pro will have –

Insurance (to cover equipment failure, public liability of someone trips over a lightstand or something)

    Multiple bodies/lenses for equipment redundancy.

Experience on working in low/poor lighitng situations. This is what messes up most 'hobby' photographers – put them in a candlelit church and they will have no clue how to deal with it.

Creativity – depending on who you hire!

Albums – Generally albums are where a lot of the cost of a pro comes from – they aren't cheap because there is a lot of time in design etc. Plus the actual albums are expejnsive if you want something half decent.

    Basically – don't rely on a cousin/uncle – generally it doesn't turn out well.

Shows 600 on website but was 55 in the shop today. Pretty good value for a 'hardcore' hardtail – big travel fork and mostly deore is pretty good for 550. Think it was 850rrp? Seriously considered it…

Do the blue from the middle section back to the hub it's sweet fast and flowing. And definitely ride Innerx XC. It's much better.

I ran some crap Aztec pads without them for a while as the pads were too big so the clips stopped them retracting. Didn't do any harm I don't think.

I dunno, sometimes I've noticed a difference in quality between JPEG and RAW although maybe it was just a placebo effect. JPEG seemed a bit flatter to me.

technically RAW is better quality as most RAW files are 12 or 14 bit i.e. more brightness levels than an 8 bit jpeg. In practice you would find it very difficult to tell in the real world, unless you spend a lot on monitors.

If anyone is interested, my workflow goes like this –

    1. Import into Photo Mechanic. It's not terribly pretty but it renders RAW about 50 times quicker than Lightroom so I proof and mark up the ones I want to edit. Move 'edit' files to seprate folder.

    2. Import edit folder into Lightroom. Edit.

    3. Touch up in Photoshop if required (very seldom as Lightroom handles pretty much everything you could require nowadays)

    4. Export as JPEG high res keeper files. Then export for facebook (720px) etc as required.

Take the photo correctly in the first place and if JPEG is that bad from your camera, get a better camera / lens.

The problem with this is that not everyone can expose correctly all the time. Even Pros struggle in certain light types. RAW is good if you need maximum keeper rate i.e. if you shoot a wedding – things are so quick moving that you can't spend ages metering light you go for your best guess for exposure based on experience and most of the time you get it right but RAW gives you the fallback to adjust white balance, tone and exposure to a much larger degree than JPEG does.

If you are really just starting to 'dip in' then you are better sticking to JPEG until you understand the advantages/limitations of RAW.

By limitations I mean that if you don't know what you are doing in Lightroom/Aperture etc then there is a good chance the camera would have done a better job of processing the image.
