Cheers guys… I saw the posts about those two Fieldy, but haven’t seen anything of them I’m afraid.

Thanks for all the input. Big debt yes, but still room for some flippancy (Or I wouldn’t have asked on here!), but thanks TooTall.

It is the nicest house in town for the best price, and not the only one at risk from rising water, but it’s not dirt cheap either. Will be asking for more info on the last flood – If it was a trickle down the back stairs that got the floor wet then adaptations might provide enough peace of mind but if it was a gusher through the front door I don’t think I’d take the risk. Definitely a concern that more extreme weather may be becoming more common and that flood defences planned for the town are likely to concentrate on the town centre and may make things worse on the outskirts either upstream or down… (Levels were raised upstream last year by a huge whirlpool forming where the two rivers meet, bet they weren’t expecting that to happen!)

Haha, you don’t happen to have a house for sale do you Binners?

It may be possible to have a quarterly variable DD. We have it with British Gas and still get the DD discount. They don’t seem to publicise it much as an option…

It seemed that simple, just wanted reassurance there wasn’t some loophole that’d see me short of £75 of fees with my item still unsold (I don’t see him saying “oh alright” and putting his hand in his pocket though!)

Pain as it pushes everything back two days…

Normally I do just let the auction run and turn down all the low offers, but there’s really no way of doing that in this case (other than not having offered Buy It Now in the first place)

    (Slight hijack but on topic)

Any advice for me as seller where a “buyer” has hit ‘go’ on a Buy It Now at one price, but is now saying “£xxx is as much as I can go to” – about £150 less than the BIN price. (Annoyingly just 7 hours into a 10 day auction – I thought it seemed too good to be true!)

Theoretically he’s made a commitment, but in practice there’s no way I could force him to pay the full BIN price. I’m fecked if I’m giving it to him for the lower price though…

Do I just wait the two days and report him as a non-paying buyer?

    Cheers,

    Chris.

Don’t get your heart set on it before working in a cafe. Amazing what you’ll learn and also amazing that people will spaff their life savings getting into an industry they have no experience of.

If you’re still keen after that then location, staff, and selling what people want rather than what you think they should be having are key. Good luck if you go for it!

@Molgrips – 1Tb’s not exactly the bleeding edge these days though is it? They’ve been around for long enough to be reliable surely?

It seems to get any cheaper than £309 (for the i3 Asus, or there’s a slightly streamlined looking Acer with onboard wireless for the same price) I’d have to get a less well known brand and drop down to a Celeron processor (going for AMD doesn’t seem to save much) as well as less RAM and storage. How does a Celeron G550 for example compare to the i3 processor? Is that worthwhile compromise for a £50-100 saving?

Thanks for the input. I’ve always gone a bit up from the cheapest in the past and stuck with mainstream brands – in my mind I’m getting something a bit more reliable and ‘futureproof’ (for what that’s worth) for little extra outlay… Point taken though on the i5 Asus. There’s an i3 version with 6Gb RAM for £309?

I don’t think too much storage is a problem. Not much cost saving for a 500Gb drive and if he’s got tons of space I can leave an off-site backup of my files in case Lancashire make a pre-emptive strike on the Mother-county 😀

Thanks gents, but the Sevens is a Saturday and starts in the morning (I guess most matches kick off early afternoon)… Greedies appear not to open on a Saturday at all and the White Swan doesn’t open until 11:30.

Wetherspoons is still edgeing into the lead at the moment as it’s not too far from the station in the wrong direction, opens early and, well, it’s cheap isn’t it!? (Needs to be to compensate for the £70 dinner later on…)

Ah, an exponent of the ‘eating’s cheating’ philosophy I see Toby?!

We need to meet up before going in and as it’ll be a long day a good feed will help more than hinder I think. But then I am a soft get.

Thanks Jambalaya: Anywhere in particular on Church Street?

I was mainly considering the early beer as a hangover suppresant to help us face breakfast, but there will indeed be plenty (too much?) opportunity to catch up later on if we don’t go to Spoon’s.

Arg, still sweating off a tediously low-level but persistent cold that I want rid of for the weekend otherwise was going to join you for this (assuming you’d have let me follow you around…)

Have fun though, doesn’t look to have been raining too heavily and the moors were riding lovely and fast on Tuesday.

Me and the missus each got a Cratoni Shakedown from CRC in their sale just after Chrimbo… I was reasonably impressed (OK for £50, £80 seems less good! Some on Amazon for £52) but a) don’t expect ‘proper’ full face protection from the chin guard section, it’s a lot flexier (Still would help a lot in a face first dismount however) and b) (for my head at least) the fit without the lower part fitted was terrible – I just didn’t fill enough of the ‘pot’ and it has no adjustment (cheek pads held it in place with lower section fitted).

Mine went back as I didn’t see much benefit over a down-o-matic. The OH kept hers as any more would be overkill for her riding at the moment (but she’s yet to actually use it [mutters about fair weather riders]!!)

We both have regular XC lids for less challenging riding though so not sure if these lids would work as your only option. Definitely looks less robocop than the parachute.

Just in case, can I recommend a separate backup of any photos/videos/music/important documents to an external drive or dvds before you start. Sounds like you’re on a learning curve and losing all your files (whilst effective!) is an unpleasant lesson.

Blinkin ‘eck! They’ve quintupled in price since the OP – not much of a bargain anymore.

I have the Saints and like ’em. Not much more money than Nanos from the right shop, seem to be keeping their finish reasonably well, and whilst not the hugest, they are a decent size platform and, importantly I think, the platforms are fairly well spaced from the crank.

Thanks for the info guys… Am in the process of cancelling my accomm.s – The Long Mynd hostel have given me a ‘store credit’ so I’ll definitely be down for a ride sometime, just not until the conditions perk up a bit!

Thanks CF – So would you expect the slightly warmer weather forecast over the weekend to turn it into a sludgy/slushy mess lower down with the tops still snowy?

Excuse the delay, always takes me ages to sift through… Here’s just a few of the better ones, the rest’ll be on Facebook in a day or three but I’ll not clog up stw with all of them.

If you see yourself and would like a full res version with no watermark give me a shout.

I missed the Darkstar beers too… The website definitely implied there’d be a ‘Darkstar beer tent’ which to me means I can go buy some of their tasty wares.

Still Black Sheep’s not the worst beer in the world.

Had to laugh at the Jim’ll fix it theme being belted out half way through the day (although with so many kids around I’m not so sure it should have been!)

Stavro – I wasn’t at the Rapha. It also looks good though. The original site for the Citycross was at/through an old Mill but land owners permission got pulled at a late stage.

Thanks for the Andrew Bird. Not mad keen on the Breton, quite well done but seems somewhat contrived to me, but see next point.

STW ers should listen to whatever they like and (ideally) to what other people like too, either to confirm their distaste for it or maybe change their mind.

Everyone everywhere should pay less attention to X-pop-factor pseudo talent. “What an amazing voice” should be said less often in order to justify hyping an unimaginative pop act just because they can (perish the thought!) hold a **** note!

I like to hum this to myself when descending (to make up for how slowly I’m going):

    Online marketing in action…

Just this morning I received an email from 7dayshop proffering wifi extenders and cheap powerline plug jobbies… Might be worth a look?

The twist that makes the dish, other than the lentils, is that it should be sweetened (some restaurants use pineapple I think? Not my bag really…) The traditional version uses pumpkin or squash (Butternut works fine, cut into small dice, put in maybe 25 – 30 mins from serving, cook to the brink of falling apart).

Red lentils work fine and are more convenient in terms of cooking time but personally I prefer the texture from the slightly larger yellow split peas.

I’ve also stayed at the one near Betws-y-coed and would recommend. Very nice little woodmans caravan there for the upmarket option or a very reasonably priced 2 bed caravan if you fancy your own bathroom.

Why would anyone wash out the mud from their outer wear?

It both waterproofs the garment and holds it together.

Lycra shorts/base layers that don’t stink at a push but washed with soap flakes after each ride if possible…

More kit to rotate is the best way to avoid wearing anything that’s still wet through.

So ITV4 haven’t started doing features on local independent bike shops then… There was me thinking “Oh, that’ll be good exposure for them… Funny though – didn’t see a film crew in town as I passed”

As an update Fly Foot Selecta is currently playing Ghostbusters. You may make your own assessment as to whether this is a good thing.
