Not sure if this’ll give you all that, but I asked a similar question recently – search on ‘Reverb – Height at full extension?’ for the results.

Suppersessions – Looks good to me! No critique on here – you might comment on my bike ridin’ (lack of) ability..!

Matt – getting air in a canoe – top banana! Though I reckon you could’ve rolled that drop..

+1 for cracking=rubbish – unless it’s red hot and you throw a bucket of iced water over it, then it might. Cast iron for me. Easier to make your own with steel though.

There are heaps of canoe designs, but the first question might be what material do you want it made from (aluminium, grp, polyethylene, cedar strip/epoxy et al) which may be tempered by where you intend to use it (i.e. rocky streams vs. deep loch/lakes) and what you intend to do with it – single handed or with crew – dry sail (use from the car roof, launch paddle about a bit them return to car roof) or canoe camping including portage (carrying the thing by hand over ground from one water way to another) in which case weight & size might become the over riding consideration. You can rig some with a simple sail for downwind work too.

And you thought mountain biking came with a heap of variables..!

If you want to build your own strip plank canoe, which is do-able in a regular garage, get a copy of Ted Moores ‘Canoecraft’ ISBN-10: 1-55209-342-5 as it details not only the method, but heaps of lines drawings (plans) for canoes, which you may find useful.

We tend to build at least one Canadian canoe per intake (I teach boatbuilding at the Boatbuilding Academy in Lyme Regis) and the ‘Chestnut’ and ‘Prospector’ designs have historically been favourites.

The book’s great for materials, construction and finishing, plus paddle making etc.

    Hope that helps.

Fairplay – if you’re initially aiming to raise money for charity, and the event you choose is potentially un-doable for you, then in my experience the people you know will get behind you 100%

I entered the Kielder 100 last year, despite having only been riding for about 12 months at that point. I missed the 51 mile cut off by about 8 minutes, earning a big fat DNF. But I managed to raise £1000 for the prostate cancer charity in the process, as well as learning a heck of a lot about myself and mtb’ing along the way.

I wish you every success in your endeavours, aim high.

Do you really need the weight saving of the XTR spec trail spds? I’ve been using the deore PD-M530 (think that’s right numbers) and they seem to do what it says on the tin, for a fraction of the price.

Can’t offer anything on the seatpost though, still wondering about a dropper meself..

+1 for oldgrumps advice on releasing all pressure before stripping! And don’t compress the fork suddenly once you’ve undone the damper top cap (avoids the ‘oil all across the kitchen ceiling’ scenario – not that I’d know y’understand.. ‘cough’ – shuffles feet) 8O

When you come to re-assemble, ensure everything is as compressed as possible (by hand, don’t go to the shed and get a sash cramp on it) before closing up – so’s not to trap a load of unnecessary air in the lowers. Mine were SID’s but air forks pretty much of a muchness. Youtube is the way forward.

Milkies set up looks pretty familiar to me; The outer edge of the lever clamp on my bike is c.55mm inboard of the inner edge of the grips, which is optimal for single finger braking for me.

To be fair, I’d like my shifters about 8mm nearer the grips, but have matchmaker mounts, so it is what it is.

Hopes will stop you just fine, sounds like contaminated pads/rotors or a bleed is in order..?

I’ve just been through the ‘fluid at the lower vent hole’ scenario. It was weeping for about three weeks before I took off the top cap to look carefully. I figured it must be leaking diaphragm, and Nick at Hope kindly sent me replacements. After cleaning / checking the original diaphragm for leaks, (filled it with IPA and sat it on a tissue)- no leaks; I realised it must just have been excess fluid that had got into the upper folds of the rubber when I’d bled the brakes after hose shortening.

So, a further three weeks after meticulously re-fitting & ensuring no excess fluid, and no more fluid at the vent hole. Sorted.

Hopes’ service is great I have to say, I emailed Nick to ask what I owed them for the diaphragms they’d sent (only fair, as it wasn’t a warranty issue after all), and he told me to keep them with their compliments.

Not been to Millau, still on my ‘to do’ list – but my old girl lives near Ales, and there’s plenty of scope for off-road around there. The Ales / Uzes / Nimes area is littered with forestry-type tracks, which whilst not strictly ‘public access’ are completely ok. You’ll probably not see anyone whilst you’re out, and as mentioned above, if you do, no one really worries.

As ianv – it certainly isn’t flat!

For the best restaurant you’ll ever find in a tiny village, head to St. Just (between St. Brouzet les Ales and St. Maurice de Cazavielle)- they do B&B too.

+1 for XT shifters & Tech Evo matchmaker. Could almost do with an extra mounting hole outboard (to move the shifters outboard) to improve comfort in use if you single finger brake I reckon, but they do tidy the bars up a treat.

Considering the age of this thread, I’d plum for taking it to the vets if it’s still breathing, it probably deserves it.

On a more sensible note, anyone will tell you that dropping an anvil from the roof is not the way its done – you need to drop it from a road sweepers dust cart suspended from a balloon.. Just don’t drink the glass of free water when you pick yourself out of the hole you created on impact… :D

Don’t pluck the whole thing, no need. Just do the breasts, slice ’em off and pan fry for a few minutes. Serve with olive oil mash and a reduced red wine jus. Done.

Blimey – I cycled up (on a ‘road’ – in the loosest French meaning of the word) Mont Bouquet (629m) and descended (off-road – down a lairy pile of babies heads) on my hardtail.

Does this mean that I’ve been breaking the law? Clearly I was foolish attempting such a feat at that altitude (2069ft up) on such unsuitable machinery..

I shall have to sell the kids and buy a full-sus long travel thingumywhatsit to address this foolhardy, naive behaviour. Forgive me.

Ride where you can, when you can. Difficulty / enjoyment is surely in the eye of the beholder?

+1 Cube Ltd. Mine’s 2010 and uber-fun and capable of fulfilling the multitudinous commute/trail/race/bolt the kids seat on the back/WHY? that I require of it. Trade up to an air fork if its a low-spec model though, the RS Dart 3 mine came with sucked (blew the damper cartridge out the right leg at c.900 miles – only on a red route- WTF?) Replaced them with 120mm SID’s. Much better..

Mont Bouquet, SW France. 12 miles to get there, bugger of a climb, (440m in 3 miles) but crazy/fun descent.

Get yourself a clunker from the tip, and the Park Blue Book and have a go. There’s not much you can screw up frankly. I was nervous of servicing forks until I bothered to have a go, and discovered that a modicum of care and confidence (plus lubes, seals & the correct torque settings) was all that was required.

Working with (for) someone who’s prepared to spend time showing you where to get started will, of course, be beneficial. Good luck.

Absolutely. Strip & rebuuild. De-grease the axle, then fit/tighten drive side cone & locknut with locktite 243. Then re-assemble grease etc.

I had to do both my wheelsets (both rears, and one of the fronts) using Deore 525 hubs, and have to say, they’ve been top hole since.

Loving my new Hope Hoops though..

Ontor, yeah, I only noticed it on (wonders if the mods will allow a mention) XCracer about four days ago. I don’t know if there’s some politics at foot, but it doesn’t seem to have got much attention.

I was gutted that the Fully Sussed series was (is) a non-starter for me; I just have prior engagements/work that coincide with almost every date (first three included).

so I was delighted that there were to be another ‘evening series’. Mid Devon Cycling Club are organising them, next round’s on 30th May at South Dartmoor College, check out the MDCC website for details.

Back on-topic, the other thing I think about is (given that Archimedes said it’s not) is it possible to arrive at 10 degrees (angle) using just a pair of compasses and an ungraduated straight edge.

A colleague at work found an example on’t interweb, but i drew it on CAD and it’s not accurate to any decimal places.. (WHY OH WHY?????)

I had a bunch of Raleigh Kingpins (all hand-me-downs from elder cousins) as a kid, which I guess these days you’d call a 20″ rigid single-speed; either way, I used to drop 4 foot to flat without batting an eyelid, and could out-wheelie the only kid we knew with a BMX (his dad worked in America) – 36 of the white chevrons in the middle of the main road early most Sunday mornings (blatant willy waving..). God bless Raleigh – I for one shall remember them fondly.

Buy a second-hand cube Ltd. With a 120mm fork in the geometry’s not too dissimilar to a Stanton slackline (short chain stays and all that guff). I love mine. They’re 7005 alloy, (which is tougher than 6061 – at the minor expense of some corrosion resistance – clean it), so as tough as old boots.

    Enjoy.

Edit – sorry, missed the bit about the tapered steerer. Not sure if an external lower bearing would render that possible or not..
