Couldn’t tell you what its worth, but just wanted to say it’s great to get bikes like that on the road again !

I was in the same situation some time ago. Personally I would maybe test a coupe, if you have the chance.

In relation to carbon vs other materials, a good carbon frame can be designed to be more comfortable than any other material, so don’t let that put you off. There is also some tuning you can do with the right seat post and seat without great expense.

I am personally a fan of cube bikes, I have tried against some larger more well known bike models and I have found them to be excellent value for money in terms of spec and weight. In rid quality and handling they are also a winner and in my opinion out handle my road bikes which have cost double.

Also in terms if sportive geometry, I thought about this before too. But in the end I went for a regular race geometry. I did this as I want to have the aggressive position if I want, you can just put an extra spacer to raise the handlebars if you are worried. Also, I don’t know what sportives you will be riding, but those I do have a great deal of climbing, 70% of the time or more is on the hoods.

I would take a good look at cube agree, don’t know much about the others, but in general good bikes. German quality and engineering, but you are not paying huge amounts for the name.

    Good luck!

If the LBS did what the OP said it did, its an absolute shame and they do themselves no favors at all. When you use one you put your trust in them and expect a certain level of service not to be ripped off.

So how much cash does the LBS make on parts and repairs. Well, repairs are a double whammy, as they will charge you for both.

Now why is OP using 2 accounts? Every time i see something posted that remotely looks like its criticizing an LBS or even someones favorite band, there are some individuals who automatically will turn on the OP and suggest that he as an ulterior motive and then will proceed to try and discredit him with whatever means. This is more so if the individual has not posted before. This is unfair and plain mean in many cases, some individual may be happy lurking and enjoying reading the posts and may only be motivated to post by a negative experience which they want to vent. Seems to Happen a lot here, I think its because certain individuals may feel like fools for either buying a criticized brand or cant face up to the fact that they may have themselves been subject to poor service or a rip off but cant face up to being stupid and not understanding.

Anyway, that aside, and given the responses the OP has had so far, I’m not surprised that he would use a second login to make a complaint.

How about soap and water ?

Carbon doesn’t need anything special you know. It will not dissolve.

well, are you using pounds to confuse modern or young people? 😐

I finished mine during the week, its a large comes in just over 12 kg I think. Maybe 12.5 I would have to check again. Feels big tho.

Why don’t you think about what might tempt you into going to places like france, Switzerland and Spain. What do those places have that we don’t. Are people likely to pay money to travel to another country to go to a trail centre when they have impressive riding of their own? I certainly wouldn’t.

On top of that, the U.K. is expensive, dull, has terrible weather and food and is pretty much all round crap in comparison to almost every other part of Europe. probably get stabbed and you bike nicked too.

Hope that sums it up for you 😆

    Solidworks or Catia.

Both good, pro-engineer will also do it.

Several people have said that roads are dull. While they may be where you live, they are not in all places. So I would rephrase and say something like ” where I live the roads are dull”.

Did the OP look like he needed assistance, or would he have just looked like a bloke out with the kids pushing his bike and trailer along because maybe it was too heavy?

I pass loads of people pushing bikes, but I don’t always look for flat tyres. Generally its quite hard to see those details at the kind of speeds that I’m hitting 😯

Use acetone or nail varnish remover. It will not harm carbon bars.

    MTBCY,

It is highly unlikely that TREK are able to ascertain the cause of this failure without a physical examination. It is their first response to reject claims, you will probably need to push harder. I can help you by putting you in touch with a material scientist with almost 20 years experience with composite materials and also failure analysis.

Give me a shout if you need support.

Even if you swap out like for like on a rim, it’s not advisable to reuse spokes and nipples, at least that is what every single reputable wheel builder has told me.

“swap out” ? what the hell are you talking about? next you will be throwing around phrases like “my bad”. Try not to sound like a fool please 😆

Now closer to the point. This crack is in an unexpected position. My guess that it will have been initiated by one of the grooves in the rim. I would expect it to be a warranty issue but I don’t thing you can reasonably expect that since the rims were used when you bought them.

As for reusing spokes. I think if a spoke has not had a great deal of use it would be safe to reuse it. Otherwise, maybe it could be some way through its expected fatigue life.

the possibility to make huge amounts of money, ..

In the MTB market? Hehe.. No chance.

You give marketing too much credit for power. Brands react to what consumers do.

Mate, you are living in cloud cuckoo land. Seriously! you don’t think that there is lots of money in mountain biking? wake up and smell the cornflakes buddy.

Let me tell you that when you see some carbon fibre frames tagged up for $3000, they will have come out of taiwan for no more than $300. And further, you will only see innovations in the bicycle industry developed that are clearly marketable. For many large bicycle companies, marketing budget far exceeds development. If its not highly marketable, its not developed, its as simple as that.

At higher cadence you use less force per pedal revolution than you would for the same speed with a lower cadence. This means that you will tire your legs later than for a lower cadence. Its good for endurance. Higher cadences employ low twitch muscles which are more efficient at removing the lactic acid from the muscles. Big gears generally use the fast twitch muscles, more power, but less effective at removing lactic acid and you fatigue faster.

    Epicyclo,

I was not commenting on the choices made by the individual, regarding which size of wheels they choose.

I was commenting about the possible motives of large bicycle companies to change wheel standards.

    Its either:

    1) Improving the individuals biking experience by offering marginal benefits to riders. I say marginal, as there is little which has been quantified today.

    2) the possibility to make huge amounts of money, by convincing the masses that they need to change to the new standard. Thus opening the door for massive fork, frame, tyre and tube sales.

So… in all honesty. What do you really think was the initial motive?

well, my mate jim told me that he went for a bike ride in the woods. He bumped into a sexy Swedish girl who was riding her bike and lost her way. He told me that he pointed her in the right direction and to repay him for his kindness she stripped off naked and they both went skinny dipping in the river (water was cold apparently), the rest you can imagine yourself.

Anyway, since then I have been riding the same woods everyday, but sadly I still didn’t have the same luck.

If he pulled out in front of you, there is a chance he didn’t see you. You must assume so and then ride in such a way as he knows that you are there. Make yourself obvious in his rear view, don’t dart about, so you are missed if he glimpses in his rear view.

For you the clue was that he pulled out on you, after this you should be hyper aware of the type of driver you are dealing with and adjust your riding style accordingly. If you come up on him all of a sudden and for him its a surprise, this can trigger a nervous and aggressive response.

Be aware, adjust your riding style, and remember that cyclists are not always seen.

wait a minute, I just had a thought.

In all what I have said so far, I have gone on about numbers and evidence and the lack of it.

Well, while I was making a brew it came to me. We don’t need evidence. People generally believe what they want to believe regardless of if any evidence exists or not. Even when there is overwhelming evidence against their beliefs, they will discount it, however robust, and believe any old crap that supports their hypothesis.

    chief9000

    Damn,

I just had a rant on a similar thread about this crap….

    chief9000

    And another thing…..

Many of you chaps are probably familiar with the story about the guy who joined an olive company. The olive company was not making money (or something like that)and the new guy came up with a simple idea to turn things around. He went in to his boss and said “why don’t we take one olive out of every jar” Bingo, the company saved made a load of extra money.

Now picture this. you work in a bike company. Things are rather slow, sales are plateauing. A brainstorming meeting is called for. “we need something new. Something that other don’t have, will give us the advantage of being first to market and so on” One bright spark pipes up and says “lets make bigger wheels” and then in come the marketing department to make the case. Pros have to ride them as they are sponsored and then people have to buy them.

The bigger wheels thing has turned the whole bike industry around. There are so many people who buy what is new, just because it is new. This single change has had huge influence. Frame manufacturers, tyre manufactures and frame manufactures are all cashing in.

So lots of people cashing in, and big advantages for the industry, but still we see few numbers which support the perceived advantages for the consumer.

Now maybe they exist (i’m happy if they do) But what I would like to see is a more intelligent consumer, who questions benefits and does not get sucked in by marketing crap. By this I am not suggesting that people who now buy bigger wheels have done, its a general comment.

Well, I chipped in with a comment some time ago and since this thread is still hovering about I thought that I would chip in with another.

I have read the information on the think the “Christhetall” gave earlier. Now although this might be compelling evidence for some for me it has, like almost everything else I read related to this, no basis for discussion.

I am a technical and analytical type of person, I question things to understand them. What I notice is that people who write about bikes, generally have very little knowledge about any technical aspects related to them. Material, performance or otherwise and for me this is quite clear and automatically devalues an article when i see some “non-truths or evidence on poor understanding.

So my point is that, I have little faith on much of what is written in the cycle press. The above, article is another such article. It lists many reasons why one bike may be “better” than another, but its lacking one thing….. evidence! there is not a single number substantiating any of it.

If the results are so clear, why are there no numbers? as mentioned by someone previously, there are clear trade offs. Maybe there are some advantages, but there will also be some disadvantages. We never get anything for free. For instance, increasing wheel size may increase stability, but it will also impact maneuverability. You will have to choose which you prefer and what suits you.

Gyroscopic effect is something that’s also talked about. Surely this is now scraping the barrel? I read an article where the author proved that gyroscopic effect has almost no influence when a rider is on a bike.

    lets see numbers.

Sounds like this highly scientific test is based on…..errmmmm pretty much zero meaningful data?

Go back, compare exactly the same bike model with different wheel sizes. Use the same track climb it 5 times with each bike. Alternating which one you use. Use the same method of speed measurement on each, add a power meter and heart rate monitor too. Then keep a close eye on the weather to ensure that is remains the same for each run (we wouldn’t want colder more dense air slowing us down now.

Once you have done all of that, come back and we can all discuss the results (measure data) over a nice cup of tea.

Well done mate. I love making things.

There is real immediate sense of achievement at the end, but also much pleasure in seeing the project evolve.

I often envy people who get to do it full time.

after reading the test someone did on here about the UV of the lenses they are great quality.

Well, that’s it then great. Now we know that all fake glasses from china are completely safe….right?

No not really, just because someone somewhere did a test on a pair of glasses somewhere. It does not mean that all are safe. I would still use caution. If you are going to give them to your son, go to an optometrist and ask to check the lenses. Its the least you could do.

    Northwind,

Ok, but how long would it take a tip tip welder to pop off some bike welds? But you are right, and as I said, probably perfectly fit for purpose. My attention to detail could be a little to high.
